a finger on the veracity and logic of the joint judgment he gave in tandem with late Justice Gafoor. Justice Basanth has not shifted even a letter from what he laid down in his judgment either in his clandestinely recorded conversation or in his speech at Thalassery.   What else would you expect from a renowned Jurist?

Now the political bigwigs have taken exception to certain revelations which he made in his 2005 judgment and explained in the private conversation. If those were damaging to the woman hood of Kerala why the hell every one was sleeping all these years? They wanted a Delhi gang rape case to happen and the new ordinance from the Govt and the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the acquittals. Supreme Court decision is most welcome and let the case be reexamined.

But how come on this day (08 Feb) when Basanth reiterates what he laid down in his judgment which would have been read through umpteen times by the concerned parties it becomes objectionable? And you know the psyche of Kerala people; within hours all over Kerala marches were held asking for blood of Basanth, effigies of Basanth burnt and the women folk picturised Basanth as a demon.

The Hon’ble opposition leader, mind you the opposition leader who holds a cabinet rank in the Govt, enticed the women folk publicly to slap Basanth on both cheeks for his   rude statements against the victim in Sooryanelli case! Isn’t it ironical that the very same opposition leader was held at ransom by the women folk of this God’s own country not long ago for his irate statements against Sindhu Joy and Lathika Subash. But no one either from UDF or from any other women organization ever said to slap VS on his cheeks! That is really Malayalali’s ‘Punyam’. That is now shattered by VS himself.

Please think. Does former Judge with an impregnable professional record deserve a slap for a comment made on his judgment in 2005 and sticks to it even now . Lets have some sense of sincerity, sensibility and sensitivity when we deal with such issues that affect our society and our harmonies living.

Lets be warned if we do not curb the ever widening influence of media in our day to day life to a well designed bench mark we are heading for doom!

22.  A unique  Award ceremonyLL 17 feb 2013

Yesterday. Bit gloomy Saturday evening, so forced to remain at home! At 05.30 I switched on my idiot box and as usual started scanning thru various channels. My eyes got stuck at Times now, which was broadcasting a report of the Second TOI Social Impact Awards function held at Delhi on 02 Oct 2012.

Times of India Social Impact Awards are an attempt to honour the activities of thousands of people who are not satisfied with sitting back and watching, who have taken the plunge and worked for delivering such essential needs to our compatriots as education, healthcare and decent livelihoods. TOI Awards help focus greater attention on five critical sectors: education, healthcare, livelihood, environment and advocacy/empowerment.

For a change, these awards are exclusive for NGOs, Corporates and Govt orgaanisations who excel in the five sectors mentioned above and not for individuals. The elegant and simple function organized by TOI in partnership with JP Morgan was anchored by Prakash Jha, film director and social activist, The unique feature worth noting was that the awards were presented not by political bigwigs but by the beneficiaries of the initiatives taken by the NGOs/ Corporates / Govt organizations selected by an eminent Jury headed by Padma Vibhushan Naresh Chandra, former Cabinet Secretary. Apart from 11 awards in the five listed sectors the Jury has selected Naga Mothers’ Association recognizing their years of fighting drug and alcohol abuse and human rights violations in Nagaland and Manipur.   This prestigeous award was presented   to members of the association headed by its president Ms Abei Meru by Hon’ble President Of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee. At the end the rendition of Janaganamana by a group of students from the Deaf Foundation was a treat to watch.

I being an ardent Malayali was hoping against hope that at least one NGO/ Corporate/ Govt organization would figure among the awardees. But that was not to be! Kerala which boasts of the first democratically elected communist Govt, highest literacy status in the country, best educational facilities even in rural areas and plethora of social activists and NGOS waging war with establishment for social justice and upliftment should definitely have done better if we could shed our affinity and obsession to ploiticise each and every issue leading to overall development of the state and society and stop bands, hartals and the latest trend of effigy burning. The politicians irrespective of their party affiliations should take the lead in this aspect so that we, the people of Kerala, can boast of some achievements in the years to come!

23.  Frailty th name is wOMAN :: 15 Feb 2013

Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) said “frailty thy name is woman!”   One of the synonyms   of frailty is defenselessness as per dictionary. What a brilliant brain that British dramatist had! He could foresee the plight of Indian women even more than 400 hundred years ago!

The snivels of the defenceless Indian women are echoing all over the world even after 65 years of independence. Despite the gruesome rape and murder of that poor girl in Delhi and the aftermath resulting in a special Ordinance by the Govt to safeguard women’s safety against cruelty to women in all known forms go unabated in this so called best democracy in the world, well amplified by the increased number of rape cases, maltreatments of women and verbal abuses of women sentiments reported in print and visual media during the last one month.

The ‘aam admi’ is agonizingly disturbed from the fact that all the efforts from the Govt, social organizations, political parties and the common public   to curb the menace of ‘women abuse’ in its entirety are being brought to naught by a section of populace who doesn’t care a damn to the welfare and harmony of the society as a whole. The spectrum of this class extends from the common man on the road to the highest echelons of power political or otherwise.

Case in point here is two fold.

First, the burning issue of Mr PJ Kurien, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajyasabha on his alleged involvment in the infamous Sooryanelli case in Kerala. Certain revelations that appeared in print and visual media has cast a suspicion on the minds of 'aam admi' about his involvement in the case.   His image and integrity would have been well served if he had preferred to step aside on his own till he is cleared by the court of law. Instead he tries to argue his own case by calling it a politically motivated campaign against him. He writes letters one after another to the Congress President explaining his innocence, which did not cut the ice so far.   Congress high command is yet to take call on this. If the Congress president on her wisdom asks him to step down till the issue is sorted out what will be the caricature of PJ Kurien the political students in Kerala will draw? 'Aam admi' would blame PJ Kurien for taking the suicidal stand of sticking on to his chair, and would brand him as a classic specimen of political arrogance!

Second, the worst form of political arrogance was presented by Shri Vayalar Ravi, a Cabinet Minister in the Centre while addressing the media persons in Kerala the other day. In response to a question related to rape charges against RS Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien, the overseas Indian affairs minister humiliated the woman journalist asking her “ Have you had similar experience with Kurien?“ Mind you, these are the exact words of a 76-year-old veteran politician and minister in reply to a question by a 24-year-old young woman journalist. Any one watching the video of the incident would be bewildered by his aggressive body language through out the interview. At one onstage he even retorted “ I will give you the No, You speak to PM if you want”. 'Aam admi' never knew that the Prime Minister of India is at beck and call of Mr Vayalar Ravi! Fortunately the nation watched the whole episode through its prime English channels though Malayalam channels did underplay the incident a bit. If this is not worst form of political arrogance tending to political terrorism, then what else is?

True, Vayalar Ravi regretted and apologized or his statement later. "I am sorry for what happened. I had called the journalist that very evening and apologised to her. She is my granddaughter's age. It was a slip of tongue, a remark made in jest. I sincerely apologise for it”

Aam admi’ wonders are women toy pieces to make “jest” in public?

24.  Kunchan Nambiar charge sheeted : 09 Feb 2013

It has been reported by all Malayalam dailies in Vendakka fonts in front page that Kunchan Nambiar, our famous poet of yester years has been charge sheeted for an offence committed against women in 1755 under the new Centarl Govt ordinance promulgated couple of days back.

The report says:

The incident took place some time in 1755.  On a Friday morning in front of the Padmanabhaswami temple at Trivandrum Kunchan Nambiar along with another friend Nambiar were caught on close camera for making indecent comments on two Malayali vanithas who were proceeding to the temple pond for bath. The offensive comments graded as obscene and unacceptable were,

Kunchan Nambiar asked his friend “ Kathilola?’ His friend replied “ Nallathali"

The Police have now gone to ‘Paralokam’ since got a clue that Kunchan Nambiar is there in the company of Thunchathu Ezhuthassan. Mean while, Paralokam authorites have been requested to issue necessary tourist Visa to Kunchan Nambiar and his Nambiar friend so that they could be tried here now!

Knowledgeable may please explain to Scorpio, the “unpad admi”, the meaning and intricacies of the said offensive comments so that care can be taken in future while conversing with friends and others.

 25.  Why this shadow Boxing? : 28 Mar 2013

RK Laxman’s ‘Common Man’ continues to be a mute spectator who always wonder, but scared to ask, ‘why’ to whatever he witnesses in his neighbourhood on day today basis. We, the silent majority of ‘aam admi’, are in the same frame of mind, only difference being the ‘aam admi’ get momentarily triggered in an explosive frame of mind once in a blue moon by some one like Anna Hazare and then go back to slumber like   Rip Van Winkle without the slightest inclination to introspect why every time they fail and made to bite dust only to wake up after months or years when another incarnation of Anna Hazare appears in a different attire! .

I have always been wondering why political bigwigs, bureaucrats, Govt departments, media both print and visual are quite often blamed for resorting to shadow boxing to fool the ‘aam admi’.   Isn’t bcos they believe rightly or wrongly that the 'aam admi' is a class in itself destined to be fooled all the time? I strongly feel that they are right in their assessment of ‘aam admi’ for the same stands vindicated from some of the hot news pieces of today!

First, Comrade Prakash Karat says that he doesn’t know that there is a hue and cry to remove V S Achuthanandan from the post of Opposition Leader. He further says Central Committee or Polit Bureau of CPM will not meet shortly to discuss the issue. He said that he has not received any resolution from the State Committee in this regard as also not received any letter from VS stating that he (VS) won’t attend any future meetings of the state committee. Whom are you trying to fool Com Karat when all Malayalam channels and the press reported the whole issue in
