She touched the little box in her pocket and smiled. For once, someone else had thought of her, instead of the other way around. It was small, only taking up half of the space in that little holder in her overalls.
Her pace quickened as she thought about what that little square might contain.
A world full of possibilities opened as she imagined them- a key to a secret garden, a whistle that attracts fairies, and a genie.
Once she got home, she ran to her mother. "Mommy, mommy! I was at the candy store and a man gave me a gift! Look!"
She pulled the delicate box out of her pocket, and in her excitement dropped it onto the tile floor. It broke at the hinge, and the glass it was made of shattered. Slivers caught the light from the window as they sailed across the ground and scattered all around the mother and daughter.
The mom looked down at her little girl. For a moment, just one, her face showed shock, as if what happened seemed impossible. Then, she blinked, and a tear glided down her pale cheek. Her smile turned into a pout, and then a frown, and the silence changed to loud sobs.
They hugged and her mom looked down for a second. A glimpse of purple caught her eye and she let go of her child, bending down to inspect it further.
Carefully, she removed the shards that lay over the object and picked it up. A miniature, lavender colored glass cross sat in her hand, without a single scratch or crack.
She smiled and handed it to her daughter. "Look, it's the cross. Jesus made sure it didn't break. He must have known you like purple."
The little girl sniffled and her eyes brightened, her frown turning into a large, toothless grin.
"Mommy, Jesus saved it for me. It's so pretty. It's like a little miracle, right mommy? God's really good at those!"
Her mom chuckled, and embraced her. "Yeah," she answered, a tear passing down her beaming face. "He's perfect with them."
