1. Ghosts

“Do you believe in ghosts?”

Jake tore his eyes away from his book. “Uh, not really. Why?”

“An hour before closing, the ghost of Mrs. Abrams wanders around the library looking people to possess,” answered Belle, packing up her books.

“The old librarian with the cats?”

“Yep.” The girl smiled and threw her bag over her shoulder. “You can stay and study for the rest of the hour, but Lucas and I have a date.”

“Wait, you’re leaving?” Before she could respond, Jake tossed his books into his bag and smiled nervously. “I just remembered I had things to do.”


2. Careers

“You have it figured out?” Kat asked.

Her best friend nodded. “Well, yeah. We’re graduating in a couple months, but I’ve known since sixth grade.” She frowned. “I thought you said you wanted to be a lawyer.”

The Asian shrugged dejectedly. “Thought so, but no.”

Eve snorted. “You thought you wanted to be a nurse last month.”

“And?”

“You faint at the sight of blood.”

Laughing, Kat closed her notebook. “Okay, so that was a bad choice. And so is being a lawyer.”

“Yep.”

“How about accountant?”

“Perfect,” Eve replied.

Her eyes lightened up. “Really?”

“No. You suck at numbers.”


3. The Perfect Wedding

It was perfect. Everything went according to plan, and there wasn’t a single flaw. The flowers were beautiful, the decorations spot on, the guests on time, but standing in front of the church, it felt wrong.

She stared at the pristine groom. His hair perfectly cut, his eyes shining with patience, and his smile tight and controlled.

It hit her. Everything was too perfect. A friend once said, nothing in this world is perfect, not even close.

With those words in mind, she smiled brightly and walked away. Breathing easier the further she walked, she knew her friend was right.
