Salt tears

They met while swimming in the sea. Marc had never seen anyone so beautiful. For half an hour they swam, played, laughed and the time flew by unnoticed. Suddenly her mother arrived causing the water around them to erupt and boil with her anger. She screamed at her daughter and hurried her away. Marc, stunned, could not understand. He had meant no harm and was hurt by the rejection. Deeper out to sea Mother scolded her daughter again. How many more times must I tell you – we dolphins DO NOT associate with mankind. Her daughter cried long into the night.

The dream within

I once dreamed I was flying through the night with stars whirling above me and all the world on fire below. My head hurt and I flitted from fear to wonder and back again. On the horizon a blue dawn was breaking but my flight never slowed, the stars were ever present, and the fire below burned on. And then time stopped and in that instant so did I. My journey ended and time began again in the world of men. My eyes opened slowly on a red dawn, heralding a storm to come, and the promise of fresher times.

Thirty seconds

Half a minute – no time at all. Too short to remember and too brief to count for anything. But thirty seconds was all it took to change my life. The phone rang in the study and before I could answer it my nine year old got to it. I heard him say hello, I heard him say yes...yes...um, no. I mimed to him from the door – who is it? He gave me a quizzical look and said it’s daddy. I heard the buzzing in my head before I felt my legs give way. Daddy had gone to heaven last year.
