Once Upon a Fall Night
The cold fall night was a beautiful one, but a scary one. I was running as fast as my legs could carry me. The wind was blowing through my hair as fast as plane fans when the plane is about to take off. My breaths become shorter as I push myself to run harder. The air smells like autumn leaves and pine trees.
If I wasnβt running for my life right now, I would have stopped to take in this beautiful place. What a magical place. What a frightening place. I never imagined this place would be the place where I would die, or I guess I should say murdered.
The scenery was blurring in my eyes as they start to water from the wind. Well that and being scared to death. No pun or foreshadowing intended. I turn my head to look at the, thing? I guess I should call it considering I have no idea what it could be.
Thing is about six feet tall, and covered in brown fur. His, or her I guess, has big red eyes the size of small apples. Big sharp teeth bared for me to see. With a nose shaped like a pig. This thing is weird. Thingβs strides were getting bigger and catching up with me. There was no way I would be able to out run it for much longer.
All of the sudden theres a thunder like bang followed by a loud ear piercing scream. I fall to the ground and realize I'm the one screaming. I stand up quickly only to fall down again realizing that Thing has a death grip on my ankle.
"Ow! You're hurting me," I scream at it.
Thing just lays there with it's face to the ground . It lets out a grunt after a couple seconds. I just stand there trying not to piss it off even more. I don't even know what I did to deserve this in the first place anyhow.
I was just taking a night time stroll before bed. I wandered around the neighborhood. I was going to go as far as the woods. I had heard the legands. The ones that said a beast lived in there and anyone who went in, never came out. I believed them to be just scary late night bonfire stories. I had always wanted to go into the forests, but always been too afraid. But tonight they looked beautiful and inviting. How could I say no? Just a quick look, can't be that bad. Lets just say that the saying, "curosity killed the cat," might become more than just a saying after tonight, more like a fact.
I snapped back into present time and the beast was still just lying there. I kicked it with my free leg. Nothing happened. I kicked it again in the arm and it slowly rolled over. I screamed again at the sight of the animal.
There in the stomach of Thing, was a branch sticking out. When it fell, it must have landed on the stick. I bent down to the beast and began tugging on it's hand to get my ankle free. Finally it let go and I shot up and began to run.
"Uggggggggh. Mmmmmhhhhhhh RAWR! Arggggg," the beast yelled in pain.
I stopped in mid run and turn to look at it. I was deeply conflicted, my heart aching, telling me to go help it, while my brain on the other hand was telling me to run away as fast as my legs would go and get the hell out of this place, while I still could. It's lucky I have such a big heart.
I ran back to it and knelt down. I took a deep breath then placed my hands on the branch and started to tug at it. Slowly and gently at first, but since it wasn't budging I pulled alittle harder.
"WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO," it howled in pain.
"S-s-orrr-ry. It's gu-unn-na hurt alittle," I stuttered to Thing.
He wimpered alittle but nodded his head. He closed his eyes tight. I took a deep breath once again. I pulled with all the muscle I had, which isn't very much considering I only weight a hundred and fifteen pounds. It was enough though. I had pulled the branch out and tossed it aside. Thing just layed there breathing hard.
"Stay with me," he said simply.
What the heck? He talks? HE TALKS! He understands me and I won't look like an idiot talking to an animal. Well okay, I'll still look like an idiot but I won't feel like one. I don't say anything. I just lay down and lean my head against his belly. I lay there listening to his heart beat. Thump, thump, thumpity thump thump. Slowly I let my eyes drop close and welcome the darkness.
I wake up all the sudden with blood rushing to my head. What the heck is going on?One minute I'm laying with the beast and the next thing I know I'm hanging upside down.
I scream and start wiggling around to try and get out. That got me nowhere, all it got me was to start swinging back and forth. Have I mentioned I get motion sickness?
"THING! I THINK I'M GONNA HURL IF YOU DON'T LET ME DOWN FROM HERE THIS INSTANT!" I shout into the air.
Woosh. Bam. Smack. I look up from the ground to see that Thing cut me down from that swing of terror. I was definately going to be brusied from head to toe.
"You are my slave now," Thing stated simply. Like I had no say.
"No. I am nobody's slave. Slavery is wrong. My daddy writes about this type of thing and he hates it, as do I. I would rather die a millon deaths than have my freedom taken away," I stated.
"Consider your wish granted then my child," Thing said before snatching me by the arm and swinging me around and around before letting me go to fall to my death.
I went sailing through the air. I felt as if I was flying. It was the best feeling in the whole wide world. At least this way I got to die free, rather than being a poor hard worked slave. When I land I landed with a bounce. Another one. And then nothing, laying there on my back.
Someone walked over to me and jumped up and down. Bouncing me along with them. Up and down. Up and down.
"Oh my gosh Lily! That was such a scary story. Tell it again," said Danny my little brother.
"Well maybe tomorrow night. Its getting late and we need to head inside for bed," I said then helped him off the trampoline.
"It's just a story right Lily? It didn't really happen to a little girl in our woods?" He asked in a small scared voice.
"Uh-well of coarse," I stuttered out. "Now run along inside."
I looked back towards the woods and shuddered as I heard a long high pitched howl in dark night.
