Knock knock! As Ruby went to answer the door, her mother rushed past- nearly knocking her to the ground.
"I'll get it," her mum called, walking to the door.
"Who is it?" Ruby asked, curiously.
"Be a doll and stick the kettle on, will you?" said her mum, avoiding the question.
So Ruby did as she was told. She went into the kitchen and turned the kettle on. Peeking behind the kitchen door, Ruby seen her mother talking to a tall man and a young girl- probably his daughter, she thought. The girl looked about seventeen- abit older than Ruby, who was only fifteen.
"Please let us in to see her," begged the man. Ruby could hear her mum, telling them that she was not prepared to let them in the house under any circumstances. Then, the young girl handed Ruby's mum a letter, and explained how important it was for her to pass it on.
This confused Ruby. 'Who do they want to see, me?' she thought.
When Ruby's mum had finished talking to them at the door, she came in and dropped the letter straight in the bin.
"Who was that?" Ruby asked, as they both sat down on the livingroom couch.
"Oh, just some people trying to sell something," she unconvincingly lied.
"Yeah, really mum!" Ruby backchatted. "Then who did they want to see?"
Ruby's mum was lost for words.
"Go to your room, Ruby," she said, after a long pause.
Ruby stormed up the stairs and into her room, taking the letter out of the bin with her. She ran into her room, slammed the door, and began to read the letter.
Dear Ruby,
Well, where do I start? Me and dad have been missing you.
I doubt you can remember us though, you were only about three last time we saw you. I have left my cell phone number on the back of this letter. Hope to hear from you soon.
Love from your sister,
Maddie x
Ruby was shocked- those two people at the door were actually her father and sister! She was appauled at her mother for not telling her. Ruby turned over the letter and copied the cell phone number onto a piece of paper so she could call her sister.
Suddenly, Ruby's mum burst through the door to catch her with the letter.
"How dare you take this!" Her mum screamed. "Hand it over, now!"
Ruby refused, and so her mum snatched it from her.
"Mum!" Ruby cried. "How much of a cow must you be to keep this from me? I hate you."
"You don't need a dad, or a sister!" Her mum screamed at the top of her voice.
She ripped the letter into pieces right infront of Ruby, then laughed and walked out.
But one thing her mum didn't know, was that Ruby still had her sisters number on a piece of paper. Phew!
