The floorboards creaked loudly as April approached the kitchen door, her hands trembling. She reached for the door handle and slowly turned it clockwise, successfully opening the door.
In here, there was barely anything, apart from a small, old chest in the corner. April tip-toed over and picked it up, blowing the dust and cobwebs off. In here was the key she needed to escape this torture house.
As she opened the chest and grabbed the key, there was a loud, ghostly wail. April spun her head around to see an angry-looking ghost, its face showing savage anger and hate.
I decided to cycle the easy route home from school, as Mum would not be impressed if I came home dripping rainwater all over the carpet. This way only took just under two minutes, no matter how heavy the rain was.
When I returned home, only an eerie silence greeted me as I stepped inside. The hallway had a chilly feel, so I turned the heating up to take my mind off it.
βJen,β I heard my mum call. βCome here.β
Feeling a bit anxious, I rushed in and found my mum crying.
βYour father has been killed in Iraq.β
βHere, take Pegasus. He will protect you.β
I slowly took the reins from the queen and gazed into Pegasusβs eyes. They were a shade of midnight blue, and his coat was snowy white. We seemed to have an instant connection.
Suddenly, his eyes flashed a warning. Terror swallowed up my excitement as I turned around. There was a stray unicorn charging at us, his horn a fiery colour.
Out of the blue, Pegasus jumped in front of me and reared up, furious. The unicorn backed away in fear and fled, petrified.
βThank you.β I said brightly. βYouβre a hero, Pegasus.
