Short Story

"Heeyyyy, why is the wall moving like waves on the beach?" I started to think as I would see it shaking and changing from blue to red. Was it real or was it all on my head? Was I in the middle of an earthquake without knowing? Trying to remember why I was stuck in this situation, I thought about all my loved ones and if they were also fine. Few minutes later the trembling walls had stopped and my living room returned back to its normal beige color. I sat down in the sofa to watch an episode of my favorite comedy show, How I Met Your Mother. While watching the season, I started to feel the presence of somebody in the living room together with me. Thinking it was impossible to have someone with me at that moment, I started panicking.  I have no roommate and the only one who has the key to my apartment is my parents. I am a single child that lives in New York and my parents live miles away in Florida. At this point I knew that something was going on with me.

I picked up the phone, "Hello 911, I am not feeling good. I think someone might be observing me. The walls are shaking. Please help me! I do not know what to do! " As I tried not to run out of control, I got up and started to walk towards the bathroom, as the 911 atendent tried calming me down. I stumbled through my furniture and tripped on the leg of the living room center table and the last thing I remembered was Johnny, my kind, loving, golden retriever, liking me as an attempt to leave me awake. I had only one thing in my mind, "This is the end".

As I woke up in a hospital bed, I was relieved that I was still alive but almost instantly I felt bugs crawling all over my body. I screamed at the top of my lungs, "HELLPPPPPP!! I'M BEING EATEN ALIVE BY ANTS!!!" As I tried to remove the bugs from me body, I ripped off the iv from my arm. Green liquid oozed off my arm as if my blood had become some sort of radioactive substance usually seen in action movies. Doctors and nurses started rushing in to make sure I would not do anything to harm myself again. I continued screaming as lound as I could and not much after that I felt a pinch in my arm. I started drifting away again in my imagination.

Waking up the second time at the hospital, I realised that it was no longer a matter of making sure if I was altered, but making sure I stayed alive. A Doctor came in the room, and started to talk to me. "Hello Pete, I am Doctor Jay Swanson, and I was wondering if you could tell me what you remember about last night." I started scratching my head as I tried to remember what happened, how did I get there, and how did it all start. By now it was apparent that my hallucinations had stopped and I could once and for all get over this horrendous experience in my life. "From what I remember Doc, I was having a excruciating pain in my head forcing me to take medicine. It had been months since the last time I felt such a strong headache, so I went to my bathroom and found a pill container with no label but with two apparent different pills. One was pink and round and the other one was yellow and red. I then chose the yellow and red pill that I commonly used for colds. I could feel that this specific medicine I took was not a normal flu medicine from the instant I started hallucinating in my living room. From then on there are many blank spaces in my mind Doc." As Doctor Swanson comprehended my story and wrote it down in his observation chart, I asked him if the medicine could have done this to me or if it was a type of drug. He told me that it was probably some type of drug that was made to copy the identity of a medicine so it would be easier to sell and somehow I got hold of this pill. I did not recollect buying pills from places other than drug stores. Doctor Swanson told me that I was going to be fine as long as I finished the fluids prescribed.

For the rest of the day I stayed in the Hospital so I could finish my medications.  It was still everything so unclear in my head, but I was relieved that I was actually safe and no longer afraid of dying. I took a taxi home after I got discharged from the Hospital. When I arrived home I saw that my door was broken, as if someone tried to break in my house and that was when I remembered I had actually called 911 as soon as I felt something was wrong. Johnny celebrated as if he was happy he still had an owner. After all the chaos that had happened in one day, I sat down again in the sofa as to finally enjoy the episode I was so eager to watch. The crippling feeling that I was being observed came back to my mind. A feeling that a little girl was lurking behind the walls, just waiting to see what would happen next. I heard a light and appalling voice, just like the wind in an early winter morning, "Do you want to play?" That is when I realised it was not the drug that made me like this, but it was actually me all along. From that point on I knew that my life would never be the same.
