Tessa Roberts woke with a start, sitting up in bed searching the darkness; a light had gone on down the hall in her parent’s bedroom.
Something had awoken her out of a dead sleep. A door banging? Did something fall?
She silently climbed out of bed and grabbed her robe a walked out into the hallway. Glancing at her parent’s doorway. She walked to the bathroom across from her bedroom.
Without turning on the light, Tessa sensed something amiss, something very wrong. The floor of the bathroom was wet under her feet, and a strong copper smell invaded her senses.
Afraid to speak or make a sound, Tessa backed out of the bathroom, pushing her back up to the hallway wall, she heard a sob and glanced at her parent’s bedroom, shadows could be seen dancing along the open door.
Tessa softly sighed and made her way, silently to end of the hall, the plush carpet muffling her steps, hand on the wall guiding her in the semi darkness.
The sobbing was soft, but picked up volume as Tessa peeked in the bedroom; it was coming from the other side of the bed, near the picture window her dad had installed last year.
“Mom?” Tessa has peeked around the door to see her mom, sitting in an easy chair, head in hands, crying loudly.
“Mom, are you okay?”
Tessa froze as her mom raised her head and smiled hatred and evil pouring from her eyes; she raised her hand slowly and pointed at her daughter.
“You’re next”
Shivers ran through Tessa as she realized that her mom was covered in blood, in her hand she held a butcher knife.
“Oh shit!” Tessa screamed.
She turned and ran, instinct kicking in; getting to the stairs, Tessa turned to look back, seeing her mom standing at the door of the bedroom, holding the bloody knife.
Taking the first step down, Tessa slipped on the step; falling and hitting her head. Hitting the floor at the bottom, Tessa stared up at the ceiling; the sounds of the world were starting to fade.
“You’re next Tessa” Her mother’s face appeared above her, eyes leering and full of hate.
“Your next…..”
Tessa closed her eyes, the sights and sounds of the world fading, then it dark.
The cop cars surrounding the little house lit up the street, news vans seemed to be everywhere. Neighbors came out of their homes to watch the horror unfold.
Officer Mitch Zimmer stood watching, he had been the last to arrive to the scene, still in bed when the call came in.
“Sad thing to have happened” Mitch turned to face his partner, James Sharp, they had worked together the last fifteen years, seen a lot but it never got any easier.
“Yeah, I knew that family, our kids have the same classes” Mitch shook his head.
“I heard they found a body, the dad was in the bathtub; stabbed to death” James never candy coated anything; it was real and straight to the point with him, even if it was sick as this.
“And the girl?”
“Alive and ranting like a crazy person, but she didn’t kill him”
Mitch silently thanked God, a young girl accused and convicted of murder was something that was hard to swallow even for him.
“Yep, she keeps saying things like your next and babbling about evil”
The radio suddenly lit up as a voice came over the speaker, static loudly trying to overtake the captain’s words.
“Zimmer!”
“Yes Captain?”
“We need a missing persons report now. The victim witness her mother carrying a knife”
Zimmer stared at his partner in disbelief and shook his head.
“Captain, that can’t be, Kelly Roberts has been dead for six years".
