Honest Dan Hughes looked back—a meticulous sweep of the wood. “You’re free,” he said, “Go. Now.” He pushed the mother and child, just escaped from bondage, into the tree line—into the night.
He wiped his brow of perspiration, and turned back. He froze in place when a white man, armed, step into the moonlight. Hughes gulped, but stood his ground and stood tall. The stranger approached, took aim, asked, “Where are they?”
“Who?”
“My slaves.”
“We’re free men here.”
The blast sent animals scurrying through the thicket. In these dark times, many sacrificed much, but to no gain.
