with me a notebook and a pen. looking down at the ground around me, I smile at a flower which looks like a teapot and observe the way the plants have grown since I was last here. I look at the photos I have brought with me, the smiling girl, the drawn tired girl, then the smiling teenager with her boyfriend. What a way I have changed, and what a way anybody can. Chuckling, I remember how humiliated and embarrassed I used to feel- how stupid and alone. I wonder how many other people are out there, drowning in the sea in desperate need of a boat. From my vantage point on deck, I can see land, clearer that before, growing larger every day. Then I look back at the raging waters and imagine I see a hand splashing in the distance. What is a few more days on this boat to me, when there are others in need of rescuing, I am warm and dry, and know I am capable of reaching land whenever I want to. I give the orders are the boat is turned once again to the horizon.
Back in the barley field, I consider how to save others from a watery fate. Staring out across the hills to the distant sea, I pick up my pen and begin to write.
