Well, then the old guy told her this way out story about how he had these real special golf balls. He said that a German scientist who escaped to America from the old country made them before the war. He said the balls could make anybody a great golfer. Kinda like magic golf balls I guess. Some story, huh?β
βOh yeah β some bullshit!β replied Bob with raised eyebrows.
βWell, anyway,β Fred continued, βMy wife, like I said, was feeling a little guilty about the price of the fireplace stuff and felt sorry for the old man too. So she bought them.β
As he finished the story he pulled an old, shabby box from the bag. He carefully lifted the fragmented lid to reveal a dozen, sparkling, white balls, each bearing a small, gold, six pointed star.
Bob gazed in amazement as the details of Fredβs story echoed in his mind.
βI want you to have them. Can you use them? I canβt,β said Fred.
Bobβs hand trembled as it moved slowly towards the box. He picked up one of the balls from the box and clutched it tightly in the palm of his hand.
Suddenly, he felt a familiar surge of energy shoot up his arm and radiate through his body.
A broad smile slowly spread over his face.
