The girl goes to bed, quiet as a mouse. The day is over, but the Night has only just begun. She curles up under the blanket, squeezes her teddy bear tight. Her big brown eyes shimmer with unshed tears. She starts to tremble.

"Go away," she whispers.

A moment of silence.

Then a cold breeze drifts through her bedroom. The night wind howls like the scream of a banshee. Papers are blown around, the books fall off their shelves.

The girl whimpers and pulls the blanket over her head. She can't scream. Not again. If she does Mommy and Daddy will get mad. She has to be strong.

Something pulls at her hair. She turns to look but sees nothing.

The windows rattle in their frames, cracking at the corners.

The breeze has turned into a bitter draft; the room is freezing. The covers are pulled tight over her feet so she can't move. They're tight around her head too, making it hard to breathe.

Suddenly her teddy bear is yanked from her arms by a pair of invisible hands. The teddy is ripped apart, until all that's left is the head. Blood drips from its severed neck and it smiles a wicked smile at her.

The tears flow over. She buries her head under her arms and weeps silently.

The wind outside doesn't sound like a banshee anymore. In it lies a demonic laughter that echoes within her mind.
