Books author - "Cassidy Shay"
I take a deep breath. βMikey. I can hear you.β The six syllables come out slower than I wanted them to. My voice shakes with each sound. Thereβs a long pause. βYeah.β He sounds confused, and I understand why. Of course I can hear him. Heβs on the radio. βYou donβt understand, though." Now it all comes out in a rush. "Iβve been deaf since I was six and I was in the car earlier and suddenly I could hear this radio station and Amazing Grace was playing but I couldnβt hear anything else
βMiss Miller, you were chosen for an experiment dealing with Azuli breeding." It took a second for things to get settled in my head. The word βbreedingβ kept bouncing around in my brain, and it was all I could think about after he was gone. Instantly, I thought of all the times in the Memories when human slaves had been bred. Then it fully sunk in, making me shiver. I was to be bred, like a horse or a cow. Like a slave.
When I was seven, something happened that changed my life. I don't think about it much, but when I do, I usually wish that I hadn't, because it's hard. I've never written about this particular part of my life before, but I hope you guys like it. Honorable Mention in the 2012 Young Writer of the Year contest
