Janette That’s my name. Janette Archer.
I’m fourteen and up until now I was homeschooled. For the first time in my life I’m going to school. Like a real school. True it’s out of my hometown of Houston Texas but still beggars can’t be choosers.
I was so happy because today was the day I left. Don’t get me wrong, I love my dad, its just I wanted to see the world and that was hard when you had fangs. Yes you read that correctly.
You see I’m half vampire. I’m faster and stronger than all of the kids my age. I need blood at least once a month to survive. I’m very pale, almost white. My incisors are twice as long as anyone in my grade. I sometimes don’t know my own strength, more than once I have sent my poor (entirely human) Father to the hospital on accident.
That could be why he’s sending me to Mill Valley California. To help me control my powers. Maybe I can even use them for good things? The Half Moon Academy is for kids who are half monster half human. Finally I won’t be the freak.
I climb out of bed in the morning. My room is sad looking and lonely without all my posters. I walk over to my footlocker and find all my clothing. I find my favorite t-shirt. The one that’s got the puppy on it. I pull on my torn skinny jeans and lace my red high tops.
I walk to my bathroom and apply a thick layer eyeliner in the mirror. My dad doesn’t call me raccoon eyes for nothing. I grab my leather jacket and my carry on.
I bounce down the stairs. My dad is reading the paper. When he see’s me he smiles at me in a kind of sad way “Ready princess?”
“As I’ll ever be” I respond cheerily
I drink my protein shake and we drive to the airport. My dad pays for the ticket and drags my footlocker along. When he hugs me goodbye he has tears in his eyes.
“Be safe” He whispers as he pulls away.
I salute “Yes sir”
“You’re going to have so much fun” He tells me “You’re going to make so many new friends. I think this will be such a great experience”
“Thanks dad” I smile and walk down the hall that leads to the plane. I say hi to the pilot and find my seat in the very back of the plane. That suits me just fine. I play with my notebook as everyone files into their seats.
During the actual flight I sit by myself up until we stop at phoenix. Then I am joined by a smaller, quieter companion. She’s very pale with dark bags under her green eyes. It took some work but I did eventually get her to talk to me.
Her name was Kasey she was ten. She was also headed to Mill Valley. To meet family, she said. I knew she was lying. Call it a six sense if you will but I can sometimes tap into peoples brains and pull out information. I just have to be close to the person.
Maybe she’s going to the academy. If she is I wonder what kind of monster one of her parents was.
We land about an hour later in Oakland California. By that point we have exchanged emails and phone numbers. When its time to leave we both thank the pilot and find our bags at the luggage carousel. Then I wait.
I was told a woman with blond hair would come and find me. So I waited. I noticed Kasey was also waiting for someone. I walked up to her “They told you to wait for a blond woman didn’t they?”
“You too huh?”
I set my footlocker down and sit on it. We play card games until finally she shows up. “Girls?”
She could be really any adult on their way to a business meeting or something. With her pencil skirt and black pumps. She’s even holding a briefcase.
“My name is Margret” She held out her hand “I am the contact and caretaker from the Half-Moon Academy. I’m here for Kasey Finch and Janette Archer”
“That’s us” I tell her standing up and shaking her hand. Kasey smiles just a little and shook her hand as well.
“If you please follow me” she said “the limo is waiting”
I had never been in a limo before and would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited.
Kasey dragged her three suit cases along with little to no effort. I swear to god that girl is a camel.
We put our bags in the back of limo and climbed in as the chauffer held open the door. Kasey slept most of the way. I called my dad to let him know I made it okay. When we finally got to the campus I was impressed.
I shook Kasey awake “Kay look”
She saw the big iron gates and said “WOW”
The rest of campus was pretty spectacular. It was several acres of land and clusters of buildings. A few kids were chasing each other around. Two of them were walking around holding hands.
“Welcome to the academy girls” Margret said smiling.
As soon as the car was parked we both practically flew out of the vehicle. Kasey sighed.
“Finally” She said snapping out her snow white wings and ruffling them a little. “That’s the longest I had to keep them hidden”
“You don’t have to hide here” Margret said. “This is a safe place”
I smiled showing teeth for the first time in a long time. My fangs for the world to see.
I would like it here.
