Chapter 1: No more Chances
"Ms. Langton I am more than sure you're aware, but you are really in deep water.'' Ms. Zhelker, the Dean, spoke calmly. You could tell she was trying to repress her anger, it was comical, but I kept from laughing. "This has been the 3rd time this week you've tried to run. Explain yourself.''
Her red hair was pulled back into a neat bun at the nape of her neck. She wore an ancient head band made of stone and gold that wrapped around her entire forehead, as if she came from a line of royalty. She was standing, allowing her black dress to flow gently to the floor. As old as she is, she was super skinny, and had even skinner arms, with a permanent frown pressed into her face, and bags around her emerald green eyes. She cleared her throat.
"What do you want me to say? That I'm sorry and it won't happen again?" I asked getting annoyed. "We both know good and well that that'll be a lie, so what's the point of me always coming up here?"
"All I want to know is why?" she yelled. "You know leaving here is something you can't do. You just completed your change weeks ago, and leaving will not help. It will only make matters worse! There are people out to get you Arcinders, and if you do not complete your stay here, you will get killed!" she fumed.
"I know how to fight already! Im the best freaking Arcinder here! Hell, I'm even better than half the Evenities!" I said, letting my cockiness spill over. "Why do I have to stay?"
She sat back down, breathing in slowly, closing her eyes. "Ms. Langton, I will not deny to you that you are the best student we have here for your type. But do you honestly believe that is enough?" she asked in a gentle tone now. "Your skills are great, but you lack the discipline you need. You are failing behind on your history, and now I--"
"But what's the point of history? When we fight we're not going to stop in the middle of battle and say, 'hey did you know that in 1860 the first vampire lady wa--"
"Enough!" she barked, her voice booming. As always I know I pushed her to far. When she got angry I knew when to shut up. Her eyes flashed and her hands were in fists now. I shrank back in my seat.
"I try calmly to explain these things to you Ms. Langton, but seemingly so, you are to immature to sit and listen." Her eyes pierced through me, and I wouldn't be surprised if she was choking me in her mind.
"We did not bring you here by accident. Just like everyone else, you have a reason here that'll benefit not only you, but everyone around you." Her eyes grew dark, daring me to speak, but I knew better to.
"Hand me your timetable." she demanded. I dug it out of my tote bag and handed it to her.
"Your in your 3rd hour B.O.C, I expect to get a report of you being there and NOT skipping. You are dismissed." She handed me my timetable and shooed me out.
I walked across her big office. Everything in here was made from marble or granite. It was black, brown and white. She could really get some designers in here. Her whole wall was crowded with gigantic books. I highly doubt she reads them. I think they're here just to keep up a professional look.
There were large photos of her and her glory days hanging around. The Woman in Black, is what the world knows her as. Back in 1768, she was like how Superman is to the world now.
She was beautiful; Long dark flowing hair, eyes that could convince a man to kill himself.
People from other school always come up to me or others at my school, saying how they learn about Ms. Zhelker in their history books, and how it's impossible that she would be a head mistress at a school, and how it's an honor to even meet her. Well, to me, she's like a zit on my ass that won't go away.
I turned back to her long desk in the middle of the room that demanded attention, and saw she was gone. The double doors behind the desk closed swiftly. Ugh, I hated her. Maybe that's why I tried to runaway...AGAIN! Actually it was for the same reason it would be any other day. I HATE IT HERE! I mean it's a super fun place and has nice people, but I feel like it's an amp-ed up version of a prison.
She always says it. 'You're not here by accident.' I don't care if I am or not, I never asked to be here. The worst part of it all is that my lunatic of a father would agree to send me here.
I was doing just fine on my own. Sure I would go days, sometimes weeks of starvation needing blood. That's only because I'm not to hip on killing a human.
If you actually stop to think of their families, it wouldn't make you such happy camper.
I walked down the Burgundy colored hall. I was now In the Administration Part of the school. The other two parts are just separating the girls and boys.
There are approximately 412 of us in this school.
It works just like any other normal high school. You have your cliques, talent shows, even pep rally's. Except the pep rally's were called 'Tournaments,' where you competed, and Talent Shows were just a test with the whole school watching, to see your progress at the end of the year.
I thought about running up to my dorm to grab my juice, but then she, Ms. Zhelker would just call me back in to scream at me. I didn't want to take that risk, so I turned down the hall and went into the class.
"Ms. Langton, nice of you to drop by." My B.O.C teacher Mr. Xyphyiar said.
"Of course it is." I mumbled, taking my a spot on the floor next to my roommate Ruby.
"Kelsi, what did you do this time?" she eyed me. Her heavy russian accent matched her long red curls and perky blue eyes.
"Nothing, Ms. Zhelker just wanted to see my wonderful face for the third time this week." smiled at her. She was an Arcinder just like me, but I loved her because she had the voice of a mother figure. We've been friends since the day I got here. Mr. Benquaisto told her to show me around.
The first thing she said to me was, "If you see him and Mr. Pyshlen holding hands, I've warned you."
From than on, she's the weird little friend I've needed to survive this place.
"Kelz, you got to stop doing this. What if you don't graduate with me? Then you'd be stuck with a bunch of Grade III Arcinders." she scowled.
"Ms. Langton." Mr Xyphyiar called. I looked up and saw him waving me to the mat. Huh, this should be fun. I untwisted my legs and got up. Darcey Wiggs was the one I was going up against. She was an Evenitie. I rose my eyebrow. Mr. Xyphyiar never paired up Evenites with Arcinders. Maybe he hated me as much as I hated him. Well, I strongly disliked him. I had to admit he was hot.
When Darcey looked at me, she had a worried expression.
I rolled my eyes. "Don't worry, I'm a big girl. You wont hurt me." I said.
"It's not you I'm worried about." her high pitched voice rang. I frowned to myself. I would never hurt someone in class, only in self defense.
"Demonstrate a revival kill." Mr Xyphyiar explained. "For those who doesn't know, it's when the opponent thinks would either fake his death, or is stunned for a short period of time; He will come back and kill you if you aren't careful." he expanded. "Darcey opponent, Kelsi, Attacker. BEGIN!" he started.
And off we went. I had to remember that I was the one to die. But the lesson in this class is to make it as real as possible. So when she aimed for a blow at my stomach, I quickly grabbed her arm, and pushed her back. She fell to the ground with a big crash. She looked panicked, but came back up.
She darted toward me. Quickly, I ducked, swiping her feet right from under her.
I could here little encouraging chants and some opposing chants in the audience.
Easily, before landing, she did a back hand spring and popped up, surprising me with twisting my arms behind my back, and tossing me against the wall.
Irritably, I recovered and was ready to get this over with.
I spotted the spear behind the stack of mats, and made my way toward it. I picked it up, and took a stance. She followed suit, breathing heavy, but looking determined.
The next moment was actually funny.
We were running toward each other, as if jousting without the horses. I 'accidently' dropped mine, as she forcefully shoved hers between my arm and body.
I fell down, and counted to ten. I peeked and saw her back toward me.
Swiftly, I got up, and pushed her to the ground, with her head between my hands as if I was going to snap it. She let out a big yelp that received an eye roll from me and a few others.
"Oh, come on." I complained helping her up.
"Shake hands." Mr. Xyphyiar said.
"Good job." I said.
"Thanks." she whispered breathlessly.
"Brand and Marx!" the teacher called up two Evenities. He marked down me and Darcey's match and I wondered what it said.
When class was over, it was time for lunch. Me and Ruby made our way outside to our friends Lenn, Jax, Haley, and Ben.
It was 7:00 p.m. It was kind of sunny out. We could stay out in the sun, but not for more than 2 hours a day. Our skin would burn and it would go down hill from there.
"My goodness, you should have seen Darcey Wigg's face today in B.O.C when she found out she had to go up against Kelsi." Ruby exclaimed as we took our seats. She gave them the whole run down, every bit of detail. Even the part about her yelping.
"Wait, isn't she an Evenitie?" Ben looked at me.
"Yea, I was surprised when Mr Xyphyiar put us together." I said, stuffing my face with lasagna.
"That's not looking to good for you." Haley said.
I gulped down my food. "And why is that?'' I questioned.
"If you're just going to around beating up every Evenitie you see, then none of them will want you on there side when we graduate." she told me. "Maybe you could live amongst the humans."
"Okay, One, I am not living with humans, and Two, I don't care what they say when I graduate, I am not fighting with an Evenitie when I graduate. I can survive on my own just fine.''
"You know that's not allowed.'' she pressed. She was starting to bug me with her goody-two shoes act.
"Haley, seriously, when have you ever
