I looked up when I heard the door open, about to knock out every threat that might be there. No need to worry, it was only my almost ten-year-old sister Carissa.
I lowered my glaze to the book in my hands again.
It was weird. I don’t know why I couldn’t enter the house. But somehow, all of a sudden, I could step through the door as normally…
I flipped a few pages. I already knew that part by heart.
Dear diary,
I’m the happiest person in the world! He did it. Troy finally proposed. It was so romantic! He took me out for dinner and when we came back; his whole apartment was filled with candles and roses. It was so beautiful and then he got down on one knee and pulled out a beautiful ring. “The diamond isn’t real, but I hope you don’t mind”, he said.
A small smile flashed on my face because of that romantic gesture. I haven’t even been on a date. My mom was always telling me that in my profession, it wasn’t good to have a boyfriend, she had to learn that the hard way and didn’t want me or my sister to make the same mistake. A little reminder of that was, too, a few years away from that part I just read:
Such a dick!! I can’t believe it. Troy cheated on me! While I took Christian to the park! Such a dick. I’m lucky to have Sandy as a sister. She always knows what to say to make me feel better.
My aunt Magan and her ex-husband Troy got divorced a few months after that. Unfortunately he got their son Christian.
“Mommy, what is this?” Carissa asked from the other end of the living-room, looking at a great poster on the floor.
“Nothing, honey, just something I’m working on”, my mother Sophie answered.
She stood up from the sofa and ran a hand through Carissa’s short, blond hair.
“Hey, my love, don’t you have to get ready? I thought you wanted to play with Luci, today.”
“Oh, right”, she said. She jumped at her feet and stormed out of the room.
“Why is the family tree lying there, anyway?” I asked when I knew Carissa couldn’t hear me anymore.
“I’m just working on something.”
“On what?”
“None of your business. You’ll find out soon enough.”
I titled my head. A few strands of hair flew into my field of view.
“When exactly is soon enough?”
Sophie looked at her watch. “In exactly one hour. You should probably go get dressed as well.”
I nodded and got up as well. I knew I wasn’t supposed to ask questions. Even the few ones I had asked my mother would have been too many for everyone who isn’t
my mother.
Back in my room, I opened up my dresser and took out black slacks and a white long sleeved blouse. After I put on these clothes, I put my hair up into a high ponytail and put on some light make up. Then I looked at myself in my tall mirror.
I had to admit: I looked good. The shirt was making my boobs look really nice and even in these pants my legs looked forbidden long. A seductive simile rose on my face and I run a hand through my hair. I was really proud of my hair. It was very straight and went to my hips. Its color used to be gold blond but I had it dyed and now was getting darker the further down your gaze went. It had been really hard to explain that to my hairdresser.
I rechecked my reflection for anything I might have forgotten but I couldn’t find anything. My cloth were neat and clean, my hair was pinned up to perfection and most importantly the little bracelet was around my wrist.
There were a few symbols tangling from it: a little sun with rays that were forming a circle, a crucifix, and the tiniest little bottle of holy water.
That bracelet was a lucky charm. It could save our lives but only a few of us ever used it. The crucifix was to never be turned; the holy water was not to be seduced. And the sun, well it was simply our symbol: the symbol of the vampire hunters.
“Where the hell are we driving? Normally it wouldn’t take this long.”
“Normally these meeting are just outside town. And stop complaining. It’s only been 20 minutes.”
“I’m not complaining. I…” I stopped when I saw the angry look on her face and didn’t say anything else for the rest of the ride.
After about ten more minutes, we stopped at a small lake. I wanted to ask where we were going- this places was familiar. I held back anyway. We’d left the car so apparently, we were close and I didn’t want to make a bad impression.
We went through a nearby forest and after a few minutes a guy came in sight. Dark hair tanned skin and dressed just as neat as my mom and me. He also wasn’t much older than me and looked really good.
“Nice to see you again, Ms. DiStouk.”
“The pleasure is on my side, Mr. Winchester.”
When we passed him to walk down the stairs he was guarding, I sopped.
“Is your brother here too, Dave?” I asked in a low voice.
A grin ran over his face, showing off perfectly white teeth. “He’s waiting for you in room no. 5 after the meeting.”
Of course he was.
“Katelynn, what’s taking so long?” Sophie yelled up to me. She was already at the heavy wooden door at the end of the stairs.
