I couldn't believe my boss made me stay late. Again. That man would lose his head if I wasn't there. I felt a flash of nervousness when I got into my car, which I quickly passed off as part of my fear of driving at night. I turned on the radio to drown out my thoughts. Bad idea. There was an announcement that an escaped criminal in my area. He had been incarcerated for raping and murdering women. That was just what I needed. I knew he wouldn’t get me though. He couldn’t because all I was doing was going straight home. Suddenly, my heart stared beating faster, I was panicking. Car headlights swept across the car, as someone else pulled on the road behind me. The person flashed his brights so I sped up. He followed flashing the lights again. I drove to my house although I probably shouldn’t have let the maniac know where I lived. The speeding up and lights flashing continued until I screeched to a halt in my driveway, jumped out of my car, instinctively locking it and started running for my house. The man stopped his truck.
β€œMiss, I don’t know if you realized it but there’s a man with a knife in your back seat.” I looked and he was right. I stood in shock piecing together what happened. The man in the truck had seen the guy sit up and flashed his lights to scare the guy back down. He had a gun in his hand aimed at my car and I pulled out my phone to dial 911.
The police arrived and took the criminal away. They asked me and the stranger some questions then took their leave. After they were gone I stood in my driveway, staring at the stranger who saved my life.
