"Here they come! Here come the riders!"shouts someone in the crowed.
I turn to look. All i can see is a cloud of dust in the distance. In a few moments, the specks turn into tiny figures on horseback.Even from far away,I can see the horse's legs moving in and out.I see the riders waving their arms and kicking their legs, urging their horse to go faster. Then I hear the horse's hooves. As they get closer, I can even feel the pounding. It comes right through the solves of the heavy shoes.I am standing with the crowed close to where the horse will run past. We hope the lucky dust from the lead horse will cover us and make us lucky too.But i am lucky, my name is Arizona.I am in Mongolia,a country in Asia I have always wanted to visit especially when my best friend Suren is competition for her first time.I am here during Naadam. Naadam is a there-day festival that happens ever July, It is celebrated all over Mongolia.I have traveled to Dalanzadgad, a small town were Suren lives,on a small town on the edge of the Gobi Desert.
Now the lead horses are closer enough that i can tell one rider from another.I start looking for Suren. She is wearing blue riding clothes and a green scarf tied around her long sandy hair. (I gave her the scarf for good luck)Her horse is brown with a light mane and tail.Like most other riders in the six mile races, Suren is 12 years old she has been practice ever seen she was 5 to be in the Mongolia horse race. Then i see her.She is near the front, bunched up with a group of other riders."GO Suren" I cheer for her to go faster. It seems to me as 5 riders cross the finish line at the same time there are more then 50 riders in the races, and the to 5 get the medals. Is Suren one of theme.
After the races,I rush to the finish line and find Suren. She is not smiling. She has raced six miles across the hard, rocky sand of Gobi desert. Her muscles are sore from bouncing in the saddle. Her mouth is dry from yelling "Goog!Goog!" to Mack her horse run faster. One of the judges ties a special blue scarf around her horse's neck.I can see a medal already pinned to the bridle.Suren has finished among the top 5.Even though she is tired and thirsty, she smiles a little.I run up to her and give her a friend hung and say "congratulation!" Now she has a big grin on her faces."Arizona my friend you came to see me ride"she wiled happily "Of cross i will travel a milling miles on a horse to see my best friend win."I said. Suren's 80 year old grandfather Avirmed came up to her and said "The judges want a victory lap from the winners." So gladly Suren gets on her horse and rides her horse in a slow, wide circles to help him rest and cool. While she rides she sings a "praise song" to celebrate her horse's strength and courage. The other riders sing too.Aviremd, rides along his grandater.Aviremd is the most famous horse trainer in Gobi Desert. His horse has been the Naadam champion 25 times. This is a proud day for him (and me too).Avirmed taught Suren every thing.
