Chapter 1 - Emily
I walked down the alley, my black converse leaving footprints behind. If you saw me, you'd see that I dress in black, silver and occasionally blue. A tabby cat popped its head out of a trashcan, a fishbone in its mouth. My eyes turned yellow. My eyes, they expressed my emotions for me, like a mood ring, changing color to how I feel. But the problem is, that I don't feel anything.
As soon as I was out of the city, I had relaxed a bit. No one was around. Good. I wasn't a people person if you know what I mean. The alleyways were the safest place for me to travel. I could avoid showing people my color-changing eyes. I stepped over an oily puddle and past a smashed beer bottle. The air reeked of something, like rotting flesh. The smell killed my senses I hated it like I hated my parents
Maybe being an orphan wouldn't be so bad? I hated my parents anyway, so it really didn't matter. But before I ran away, my parents were very into interrogating me. They wanted to know why I was different, why I couldn’t feel emotion and all those other things I didn’t know the answer to. They didn’t understand but I didn’t either. I couldn’t take their constant interrogations every night. I chose the life of an orphan because I had to.
My eyes turned bright green as I saw a book laying in the middle of two trash cans. It was one of those Magic Tree House books, the 1st book, ‘Dinosaurs Before Dawn‘. I could barely decipher the name. I tossed it into the trash, I had no use or want, for it. Books weren't my type anyway.
I rarely talk, so I can't remember what my own voice sounds like or, really, is. I have never sang before in my life, like I have never smiled, cried, laughed or grinned before. Its not that I don't want to, its that I don't know how to. People make smiling seem so easy but its harder than it looks, for me anyway. And how do you make water come out of your eyes? And why? And when? My eyes turned Jade.
After leaving the alleyways I went to Pickernacks’ Field. The field was full of dried up corn-stalks. The field seemed to glow in the moonlight. Stepping into a clearing and feeling a little more vulnerable and careful to make sure no one was following me I sat down on a large boulder, the moon being the only source of light in the sky. ‘Why weren’t the stars out?’ I thought silently to myself. I stretched out on the boulder, accidentally flicking my wrist a little too hard, and the earth below me began to rumble.
Chapter 2- Emma
I popped my head out of a garbage can, just finishing up my supper, a leftover fish, the bone still dangling from my dry tongue. A girl walked by dressed in pitch black clothes, and I could have sworn her eyes changed color from yellow to green when she saw the book I had been reading earlier. When she threw it away I knew there was something wrong with her. She wasn't normal. But then again, neither was I.
I slipped out of the filthy can and transformed into a snake, knowing she wouldn’t be able to hear me I slithered down the alley trying to catch up. I slowly followed her, careful to keep my distance. Feeling confused as to why she didn’t have an emotion across her face. She seemed even more different then me.
I slipped into Pickernacks’ field after her and took on the form of a tigress as well. Careful where my paws were treading. Looking out for lone sticks, I knew if I made the slightest misstep and I stepped on one, she would hear me and my investigation would be over.
Who knows what humans would do to a harmless, well maybe not harmless, tigress? I had been watching a discovery channel episode on endangered species and how they got there, There had been hundreds of tigresses and tigers before mankind came and killed them all off except a very few amount which are now in preserves. Mankind came and shot tigresses and tigers for their fur and teeth and in olden times their meat. Trying to shake the awful visions from my head, I started to catch up to the girl.
As I finally caught up to her, I transformed into my normal self, long brown wavy hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. I was wearing a pink shirt with a peace sign on it and light purple shorts that went down to my knees. My sneakers were so worn out you could see the tip of my toe through the front. A slim figure altogether. The only unordinary thing about me was the scar on my left leg wrapping the leg like a ballerina slippers ribbon. I stepped toward the girl who looked appalled and I said “Hi I'm Emma.” That’s when I saw it, the scar on her face and I knew she was just like me…
Chapter 3-Emily
I saw the girl. I didn't want anyone to see me. Including her and maybe her especially.
"Um...oh, look at the time, gotta run!" I said and dashed off. Not realizing what I had just said and not wanting the girl to see my color-changing eyes, I moved my hands, making the earth pop up behind me. The pipes underground broke and provided me with the water which I used to create the sea of ice now between me and her. I did this just to make it harder for her to follow me. I didn't want to have anything to do with humans. That’s because I wasn't one of them.
Humans just thought I was a freak. They don’t understand how hard it is to be me and they don’t want to. Except for scientists, that is, which are the complete opposite.
Scientists are humans’ everyday helpers for making the world ’better’. But in my world, they just want to dissect you and study you to find out what it is that makes you better than all the others and try to take it for themselves. I have gotten chased halfway around the globe to be pinned down by a couple of scientists who had no chance of beating me. I got caught a couple of times but I always escaped.
I never stay in one place. The scientists have pinned me down once and I wont let it happen again. Those people are what made me hate everyone and everything. But they never got close enough to get a good look at what I really was…a…thing…I guess. I’m not really a human or a monster…I don’t know what I am. The scientists made sure of that.
I continued to run, checking back to see if she was following me. I think she was. I jumped in midair, and as my feet touched the ground, I disappeared into the earth. I felt like a gopher. Literally. I popped back to the surface and I still thought I saw the girl.
A ring of blue and white fire rose around me, the earth beneath my feet started to rumble as it began levitating. My eyes turned to red and my golden hair began to blow wildly around my darkened face.
"What do you want from me?"
Chapter 4-Emma
"Wait!" I said as I ran after her. The girl ,I think, she made ice come out of the ground and I tripped sliding this way and that, until I thought ‘Penguin’. I transformed and slid to catch up with her. The ice was so cold, but still a little watery, it was thin ice and I could see right through it like glass. There were flowers….roses, pansies, and lilacs.
Lilacs were my favorite type of flower, they were so beautiful and I couldn’t get enough of them. My mom gave some to me when I was 5 and she said “These flowers are lilacs. They smell like life. Like they could last forever…”
“Momma, you smell like life, Like you could last forever. So you’re a lilac and your gonna last forever…Right momma?” I had asked her so quietly as I had compared the scents.
“Honey, I won’t last forever but I’ll last a while longer…Emma you are my lilac you will last forever in my heart.” My mom had said.
“Momma,” I started.
“Yes, honey?” She had pushed.
“Momma, You are my lilac…I love you!” I had said filling her with an enormous bear hug.
“Honey I love you too.” She said returning the hug.
My mom went to the hospital later that week and she had surgery. I had brought her lilacs every day and she wouldn’t open her eyes. Later that month she died. My dad tried to deal with the stress but he couldn’t. My older brother had run away when I was an infant and now my mom was gone. He couldn’t deal with it.
My dad left me in foster care and I never saw him again. When I was 9 I started to transform into different animals but when I was 10 I did it in public without meaning too. I got kicked out of the orphanage I had been staying in and I have traveled on my own since then.
I felt a tear leave my eye. It hit the ice below me and I slowed as I saw a blue and white flame flash in front of me.
“What do you want from me?” The girl said ,her hair flying around like a .,whirlwind, she scared me a little.
“Well I was wondering if you were like me? I mean we both have scars. You seem different from humans.” I said as I transformed into my normal self a tear falling from my cheek to the fire below.
Chapter 5-Emily
“What do you mean 'Are you like me?" I said, my eyes turning orange "I'm not nosy, unlike you.”
“I meant do you have a non-normal life…do you have a scar?” The girl said another tear falling from her face.
I stopped the tear from falling to the fire and washing the powdery dirt off my dry face. “This?!” I screamed at her “ This Scar! This thing has ruined my life! Its changed my life too much I don’t want it.” My voice was parch and I couldn’t speak very well anymore.
“Why?”
"What’s my business is nobody else’s" I stated, looking at the girl "and wipe that dopey smile off your face, your giving me a migraine". I formed some pond-water into ice darts and chucked them at a tree. They pierced the bark instantaneously. "I saw you transform, at lest I think I saw you" I said "Penguin right. You’re a shape-shifter, huh? Well, don't mind if I say so, but I believe my power is one of the best there is, at times...."
"Well I guess you are like me! I’m Emma if you forgot, would you mind if I hung out with you?" the girl 'Emma' said. “ What’s your power?”
“What you couldn’t tell…I can control all the elements. Earth, water, fire and air. I am like an Avatar if you’ve ever seen the show…” I said casually making the grass
