This seemingly middle aged man went silent for a moment to allow me to grasp what he was telling me. It sounded simple enough; but he is not what I expected to see if what he says is true. He had pale skin with a five o'clock shadow and a green t-shirt with a little bit of a gut hanging over his blue jeans. At that moment all the media stories and movies I have seen flashed through my head. There was no magic chair, no odd cell phone, and no white haired professor in a steel car coming to get me. It was just him. plain and ordinary. I had a million questions; why me? how? and of course in the back of my mind like everyone else I imagine would be tomorrows lottery? before I could ask he stood up and went for a bag in the corner of the room. I had never noticed the bag before now; it seemed odd, a simple little duffle bag. At that moment the bad movies ran through my head, I began to think that he may be here to stop some future plague, or to stop me from inventing something that would destroy mankind. I took a deep breath and asked him what was in the bag. He grinned showing nicotine stained teeth and a silver capped tooth with a slight British accent he said "you will see". He brought the bag back to the couch and sat it on the coffee table. I began looking around the room for a moment, not knowing what really to expect. Maybe this guy is a nut job and he's going pull out a stuffed animal and a butcher knife. I began paying attention to the nearest exits. Funny I never gave much attention to the library. I rarely come here. the half stacks of books go through the center with narrow aisles to go between. The larger stacks line the walls leading back to the small reading area with a fireplace in the center of the wall that extends with a flagstone front to the arched ceiling. I began to notice there were only a few people here now; the closest was a teenager using a library computer just past the half bookshelves. from here I can only see his head. I turned back to the man and asked him what his name was. He looked at me and smiled. you already know me Scott he said, but just not now; so I guess for now call me Mike. He stared for a moment, then commented on how I look the same 20 years from now just a little more gray hair. I guess that is encouraging in some way. I look the same at 50 as I do at 30. He unzipped the black duffle bag on the small coffee table in front of us. He pulled out a pile of manila folders. The top folder had my name on it with what looked like the department of the Army emblem smeared on the front with red letters marked across it stating classified. he stopped before opening the folders, turned and asked me if I was ready for this? what could I say, no, don't tell me the future, don't tell me why you came here, just go back and tell myself that I didn't want to know. I couldn't say anything at that moment, all I could do was nod in agreement.
He looked at me with a glare, and said " you sent me because you were unhappy then and now. Everything isn't about money. this is an opportunity to make things better. You are giving yourself a second chance." I asked him when the others will arrive. He reached into his jean pocked and pulled out a device that resembled an iPod nano with a bigger screen. he gave a sigh and a grimace, then stated he is not suppose to give this to me because I have strict rules against it. He handed me the device and said everything your wondering will be here. He stood up and grabbed the bag and walked to the door. When he passed he said the Army will know soon, if this is going to work you need start working on it now.
I remember fantasizing about time travel, thinking of what to change ways to make a fortune, etcetera. never did I believe what he showed me would ever be possible. I'm nobody, I never served in the military, I do not work for the government. I do not have any special degrees. All I do now is drive a forklift and go home and play with my son. I sat for what seemed like hours trying to figure out the holes in the story. he gave me a lot of information, but not all of it. how did I get from a to b. it just didn't add up. I began wondering if I paid enough attention in the few courses of physics I took at community college. I sent him back here to this point for a dream. You have so many ideas when you think it is not possible. now with the power at my finger tips I have my doubts. I asked myself where to even begin, I had no clue. I stood up from the couch and giggled. I am worried about nothing, I told myself. It is not possible it is just someone messing with me for a joke. I pulled the keys to my car out of my pocket and headed for the door. I got in my sedan and headed home, it was dark now, the fall leaves blew across the road as I went through the small town I grew up in to my home just on the outskirts. I couldn't do anything but giggle on my way home. I kept telling myself it was a joke. It just is not possible. I turned down my block, good old Susan lane, and here I am third house on the left. I pulled in the driveway and pressed the button to open the garage door. Damn thing, needs new batteries again already. I knew I should not of bought those generic batteries. I parked in front of the door and shut the engine off. I will just leave it outside I guess, I walked to the side door, of my home and looking down shaking my head that I believed that man mike for even a brief moment. Huh, my wife must of bought pumpkins today. as I opened the screen door I heard barking inside. Oh no, she finally caved in and bought my son a dog. Dammitt Jennifer, I said as I turned the handle to the door and walked in I told you he doesn't need a , I stopped as a woman I never seen before was staring at me in what I thought was my kitchen. She stood for a moment with her mouth open, as the dog growled and barked at me. I looked around from the door for a moment, before apologizing to the woman repeatedly, as I backed out the door. She followed still with her mouth open, at the screen door as I looked at the house next door shaking my head. I know this is my house the color everything is the same. I stood there for a moment confused, and the woman opened the door, my first instinct was to raise my arms expecting to see a firearm of some kind poke out the door. instead she stared as though I were some amazing object and said "Mr. Westin?" I'm so sorry sir my husband isn't home yet did you need him for something?" I put my arms down in confusion, but to avoid the police being called, I replied no, and said sorry for the intrusion once again. I turned and walked to the driveway with my head down mumbling to myself I know I'm not drunk, this is my house right. I stumbled over the crooked sidewalk and dropped my keys. I reached down to pick them up feeling around for a moment, I felt what seemed to be keys and picked them up. Wait something's wrong, this isn't right this feels like a plastic box in my hand. As I walked into the driveway the motion light came on and I looked at the object in my hand, odd looking thing, looks like some little toy almost. there are a few keys attached to the ring this box is on. huh odd. I then looked up to see a midnight blue Lincoln sedan in the driveway where I had parked my car. I looked around for a moment for my car. I know I pulled up in a 4 door Pontiac. I know I did. I looked on the ground for another set of keys but there were none. I looked at the keys I had found again, my initials were inscribed on the side of the box. as I got closer to the car the lights flashed. I turned the box around there was a Lincoln emblem on the other side. I first thought someone took my car, but it wasn't enough time, at that moment a white sedan pulled in the driveway and almost hit me. I couldn't see the headlights were hitting me right in the face. Then a male voice sounded out, Mr. Westin sir, is everything ok? he approached me blocking the headlights enough so I could see he is wearing a military uniform. I replied "yes". He persisted I still couldn't make out his face though, He asked looking at the Lincoln in the driveway "is your car ok sir?" I looked and nodded. I approached the vehicle with my fingers crossed hoping the door will open. It did, I got in the car and gave a wave to the soldier and pressed the button on the dash that said engine start. I closed the door as he pulled out of the driveway. And said out load to myself I just want to go home. After I said this a screen in the dash turned on and a woman's voice came over the speakers and asked if I would like to go home Scott, I looked at the screen and the GPS had a marker over a country road with a little house.
I followed the GPS directions not paying attention to the road shaking my head in mass confusion. just then the GPS stated I arrived at my destination, I looked and a gate with the initials SW on them was to my right. I told myself this couldn't be it as I pulled in front of the gate. The gates opened to a long winding driveway that I could see several roof peeks at the end of with a large pond off to the left. I followed the driveway to the home staring in awe. I pulled up to the home that had 2 smaller buildings on either side with a circular brick driveway in front with a fountain in the middle. It was something I had only seen on TV before now. I pulled in front of the door and a young man dressed in military clothing came to the car and opened the door. He looked at me and said "welcome home Mr. Westin did you have a good night at the library?" I looked at him for a moment and it began to click in my head. The library, time travel, could it be? I asked myself silently. The man said sir as he waved me to the door in
