Ever-so-Slightly-Sid you’ll agree
Only did things by halves you see
He’d only ever-so-slightly worked
The rest of the time he’d vaguely shirked
And ignored all the moans from his folks and his mates
About getting a job and going on dates

But one morning he awoke with a jolt
And jumped out of bed. It was nearly a vault
His mind was made up, he’d made a decision
He’d go to the Job Centre get a position
Just as soon as he’d had a little more sleep
And his bed was inviting, the decision could keep.

And then unknown to him his Mum wrote off for a post
She’d read just the thing I while she was eating her toast
She wrote it out fast, said she was Sid
She made up his CV, said what he did
But left out that he’d never been employed and more
He was right for this job. Of that she was sure

Ever-so-Slightly walked into town
Bearing the most enormous frown
He’d had in the post a threatening letter
Saying they had a job and he’d better
Come for an interview down in the city
No wonder he was feeling ever-so-jitty.

He’d got up at dawn then got back into bed
Pulled up the covers, pillow over his head
But the alarm pulled him out of his wonderful dream
And now here he was and how he could scream
His hair was sticking up all over the place
His shirt was too tight like the grin on his face.

His collar was ever-so-slightly tatty
And so were his cuffs but he’d never been natty
His shoes were all scuffed and down at the heel
But give him a break. His teeth were real!
He pushed up his glasses, adjusted his tie
And took a deep breath. It was do or die.

Ever-so-Slightly pushed open the door
And entered the brightness of brand new decor.
The blonde at the desk gave a vast double take
And stood up offering her slim hand to shake.
Ever-so-Slightly stared at her bug eyed
And felt every ounce of his confidence slide.

But he proffered his hand and took up a stance
He knew this was right. This was his chance
To prove to the world that Sid with and β€˜S’
Had what it took to not make a mess.
She smiled and she showed him into the den
Of the gloom and the cigar smoke of the world of ad men

They gazed at him squinting, and asked him to turn
They prodded and poked and said they’d adjourn
To chat about whether he was right for this job
But Sid was quite upbeat, he knew that he’d score
In an ad campaign where he was the β€˜before’.
