We stood on the edge of the cliff as we always did during the rising of a full moon I turned to look at her, her silver hair was illuminated by the moonlight. Her curls bounced gently in the breeze, she was the same height as I was but yet… she seemed so gentle and fragile as if anything could break her. Yet I had seen her kill, watched those perfect little hands break a human neck, or a birds wings. She was cruel by nature. I was her lover the one person that she could never hurt; her mother had bonded us at birth knowing that she would be a cruel child.
I stared at her, she was so perfect so soft and fragile. She turned to look at me her eyes glowing luminescent green in the moonlight “my lovely” she whispered in a voice as soft as a summer breeze but as cold as the deep south ice. She stroked my cheek softly “why does the moon seem so beautiful tonight?”
“Because you’re here with me” I replied holding her hand softly, her skin was as white as fresh snow. She stared at my hand holding hers. She was 19 yet as curious as a young child.
“Why is your skin so brown charlotte?” she asked looking at my skin closely, I wasn’t black but I was deeply tanned
“Because I have seen the sun more than you my darling” I said as she giggled
“oh of course silly me” she smiled brightly her teeth glinting in the moon light “come on tea time” she started running back to our house through the forest her bare feet making indents in the damp soil. I closed my eyes and focused on the house I felt every atom in my body shiver as I transported my self to the front door just as Anna Lee burst out of the line of trees closest to the house “you beat me again” she pouted as she walked up the steps
“Come along tea” I pushed her through the heavy oak door in the style of an old church. The house was warm as I led her to the lounge room where the maids had already set up our dinner of roast lamb and vegetables. I sat on the couch as she took her place beside me feet, her silk dress spread out in black waves. The evening went by in the normal way, her silently eating then me brushing her hair before putting her in bed.
“Why do we never touch the way we used to? The way that used to feel so good?” she asked as I slipped into bed beside her
“Because there’s no time for it just yet” I kissed her forehead “we will soon I promise”
“Cross you heart?” she asked her eyes drooping
“Cross my heart” I whispered as she fell asleep.
I woke to the screaming of one of the maids, I rolled over and noticed Anna Lee was gone “shit” I got up and pulled on my jacket. Racing down the stare I saw Mai and Jeanie hiding in the up stairs bedroom they shared “where is she?” I asked calmly. They pointed down the stairs towards the front door. I ran down the stairs my bare feet making loud slapping noises.
I flew down the front steps and looked around; down by the wood shed was Anna Lee. There was blood all over her face and dripping from her chin onto her white night dress. At her feet was a small kitten, it was dead. “Anna darling, what have you done” she stared at me and grabbed the axe
“Stay back” she hissed as she raised it above her head.
“Annie ma chérie bébé, qu'avez-vous fait pour les pauvres petit chaton?” I asked in French (French was the language that usually calmed her down)
“Ate the kitty drank its blood, destroyed the life it got from god” she laughed maniacally “they all gunna die all gunna get the same” she raised the axe “all but you my special darling” she tilted her head to look at me “all but you” she whispered.
” Sommeil Dark Angel, Dieu vous sauvera.” I whispered the safe words and watched her drop the axe as she fell to the ground asleep. I picked her up carefully and cradled her against me and walked inside slowly.
