“Uhhhhh!” I wailed, “My hair is such a nuisance!”
I swept my silky black hair into a messy ponytail. I slipped into my snow pants and clutched my goggles. I grabbed my face warmer and my gloves. I was ready for a day of adventure.
“Hurry up!” the Harris’s protested.
We, the Demento’s, were skiing in Elk Mountain. We were slowly moving to the ski lift, my frustration building as we took each step. It was the Harris’s, Nate, and Aidan’s first time, so we weren’t the most skilled ski group. I, a very experienced skier, having skied many times in the Rocky Mountains, was the part of this Demento Week. We were going to go to many places, Elk Mountain included.
“Ahhhhhhh!” screamed typical Aidan as he fell into Nate. They went toppling, causing Cindy, Grace, Diane (the Harris’s) to wobble.
“A total domino effect.” My friend Cecilia laughed, high fiving me.
She was one of the only few Demento’s that knew how to ski, so she was helping me survive this week. Yes, I said survive. Normally, if you had a group of friends, they would act like a normal group. Sure, they would fight, but they could get over it. They would be able to organize events and help each other out. Other times, you would get stuck with a group that had a girl who acted like a cat, three boys who failed at kicking butt, a girl who was so spazzy, she scalped people when she was sorry, a girl who could make people confused with her logic, and a few others. Guess which group of friends I got stuck with?
Right.
That’s why Cel and I had to turn into the threateners, as well as the ones who organized these events. Although I had a demented group of friends, hence the word Demento’s, we were tighter than pancakes and syrup.
“We’re boarding!” Diane jolted me out of my thoughts.
Cecilia, Claire, Jacob, and I were going to help the others on the ski lift, since they obviously didn’t know how to ski. Thank god the ski lifts could fit three people. I took Cindy and Grace. Claire took Aidan and Diane. Cecilia took Nate. Thanks to me, Aidan could make loony faces to Claire and Nate and Cecilia can debate for the 10 minute ski ride. Aren’t I one of the best people? I picked Cindy and Grace for obvious reasons.
“Here we go!” Cindy’s voice echoed as we boarded the ride.
My doom was finally coming.

“Yay! I made it!” Cindy shrieked. She slowly got of the ski lift, wobbling so much I was worried. It was really windy, the snow forming small tornados. But I came prepared. I grabbed one of those ropes you tie around beginners so you don’t lose them from my big pocket, and I tied it around Cindy, then Grace. I gave Claire, Cecilia, and Jacob ropes before the ski lift, so they were prepared too. I could hear Nate in the background, whining to Cecilia. Cecilia rolled her eyes at me and used her logical gift to persuade Nate into the rope process.
“Everybody good?” I yelled over the howling wind. They all faintly nodded, looking half nervous, half excited.
We started down the beginner slope, the sharp winds cutting into my face. I pulled up my face warmer, making sure that everyone was all here. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 …… where’s Nate?!?!?!?!?! I searched frantically, looking for that familiar flash of brown hair. I saw nothing. I quickly looked over to Cecilia. She was anxiously mouthing to me, something like how she lost him right before we skied down the beginner slope. I gasped. Nate must have gone down the black diamond slope!!!!!! What are we going to do?! I used our code words to Cecilia, asking her to tell Claire and Jacob to stop the other Demento’s. We had a mission to complete!

I gathered up the group, determined to find that annoying little pest. After I saved his butt, him and I were going to have a little talk.
“Yo, Spazz, what are we going to do?” Cecilia sounded calm, but I knew better. She was afraid that she was going to get into deep trouble. I rubbed her back, repeating that it was going to be ok, as I thought of a plan.
“Ok, I got it. Cecilia, you and I are going to go on that black diamond slope. I know these slopes pretty well, so just follow me.” She nodded. “Claire and Jacob; you guys take care of the others. Go ski down the rest of the slope and tell our parents what happened. We will come back as fast as we can.”
Jacob nodded. I was glad to have at least one obedient skier, besides Cecilia, of course. Claire started arguing, but one look at my are-you-really-arguing-with-me face, she shut up and started gathering up the others.
“Hurry back!” Cindy said. She looked worried. All the Demento’s did. I shared a knowing glance with Cecilia and she started her pep talk ability. She finished just as I readied my skis and ski poles. She nodded, ready to go and save Nate.

Cecilia and I zipped, being the best skiers of the Demento’s. We flashed by, upsetting the other skiers. They saw that we were just 12 year olds, and stared in amazement.
“Just shows that many people underestimate us.” I murmured to Cecilia as we past yet another group of astonished skiers. She smirked back in response.
The winds were ferocious. The wind blew me and Cecilia a little of course, resulting in delaying more time. I finally spotted him, that little nut.
He was actually laughing!!!!! Nate was skiing straight down the hill, not stopping, not using the correct skiing position either. What was wrong with this boy???? He then fell, flopping to the ground.
We rushed to him. “what’s wrong with you?!” Cecilia yelled.
“You could have been seriously hurt, Nate!”
“That was so much fun! I never knew skiing was this accelerating!”
We argued with him for a few more minutes, attracting a lot of attention. Cecilia and I finally decided that it was hopeless. We tried to drag Nate for the rest of the ride, but he fought us. I lost my grip and sailed into the air. I felt a thud. s

All I remember was black. Nothing but black.
