Chapter 1

I held her closely gently caresssing her face and hair. I sat with her in my lap and my hand still covered the bloody wound, keeping pressure on her stomach. I felt rage and regret that I ever joined the stupid gang, but he had known the risks that came with it, but I never knew what that meant until now. My mind replayed tonights horrible memories now branded into my brain; we had been on a date and walking together laughing and playing and joking around. I saw the members of the other gang and I reached for my gun and told her to run. The other gang members fired three shots toward them and I prayed silently that the bullets missed us both. But my prayers went unanswered, when I saw Rose go down I realized what happened. In my anger I killed the rival gang members, and went to Rose. I turned her over to see what the damage was and I saw thick, red blood pouring out of her wound and onto her clothes and onto the ground. I covered her wound and put pressure on it and to hide it from her. She opened her beautiful dark eyes and said, "Jake? Babe,is it bad?" She sounded like a little kid, and I knew that it wasn't going to be okay, I knew that Rose was going to die in my arms tonight. I lied and said,"Yeah baby, I'm right here. I've got you, you're gonna be okay." She smiled her lovely smile and whispered, "Thank you for lieing to me." I leaned down and kissed her lips gently. Her eyes closed and her breathing stopped. My Rose, my beautiful Rose, was dead on the ground. Because of me. I didn't realize I was crying until the teardrops splashed on Rose's face. I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, and opened it. Inside was an engagment ring that I bought earlier that night before I went to meet her for our date. It was a silver ring, with a trail of diamonds on the sides leading to the senter of a 3-D carving of a rose holding a princess cut diamond in the center. I placed the ring on her finger, I put her down and placed her hands to cover the wound and I fixed her hair. Someone like Rose should never die like this, on an empty street in the dark, by a bullet. I got up and collected myself, I turned to leave. I walked a little ways and I heard something rustling behind me. I turned to look and...I saw Rose get up and walk towards me.

I opened my mouth to yell, but suddenly she was there in front of me; She covered my mouth with her hand and said, " Shhh, Jacob. Yes, I will marry you." Then her face faded, my vision blurred and blackness consumed me.

"Jacob. Jacob. Jaaacob... Wake up Jacob. I moved at the sound of her voice calling my name, I opened my eyes and automatically searched for Rose. I smiled as I opened my eyes and sat up. I had never been to Rose's apartment. More like a two floor studio; I was laying on a black leather couch next to a glass coffee table and across was two high back stuffed black chairs to match the couch. Behind and to the left was an open kitchen of stainless steel and dark granite. And across from the kitchen was a flight of stairs that led upstairs. The wall of glass, and an incredible view of San Antonio. Filling up the empty spaces was strange colorful art, except for the wall on the right side. A vast oil painting hung a young girl with smooth caramel colored skin and half her hair done up in a bun and half down in dark waves falling down to her waist. She had on a dark red corseted dress with black lace trim and black lace shawl around her perfectly shaped shoulders. Her unblemished face was oval shaped with green almond shaped eyes looked sort of familiar. "Yeah, that's me when I was younger. " I looked at Rose, thinking it was some stupid joke about her family tree. but her emerald eyes where completely serious. My smile waned as he took in her bloody clothes and mouth, her mussed hair. the memories of the other night came in a flash flood: the rival gang members, the gunshots, and Rose. Rose dead. Rose's blood on his hands. I felt my eyes widen in terror as I looked at the girl who was undead. Rose started to speak, "Now, Jake, babe. There are some very important things I need to tell you. but we need to talk about it calmly." Rose reached out her hand and I saw my opportunity to flee from this creature that I once knew as the love of my life. I almost made it to the metal door but then right in front of the door stood Rose. I stopped too fast and slid on the red rug on the hardwood floor. I went down on my hip and slid on my thigh, grateful to be wearing jeans and I stopped right at her blood stained shoes.
