She wore a black shirt and light blue jeans paired with white sneakers. Her hair was light blonde and to her shoulder, but I couldn’t see her when I turned around. I just found a pony coloring book. It was massive! Mommy would love it. But where was mommy?
My chest starting hurting, my ears could hear a tiny “thump thump”. The thumpies grew louder, faster and faster, like a pony running in the wild. I turned around. Mommy! She turned around the corner, leaving my sight.
“Mommy? Mommy why you leaving me?” I whispered.
I heaved the massive book under my arm pits, it was twice my size! One foot in front of the other, I headed towards where mommy went. She had gone to the milk aisle. It took a while, cause you see, I’m tiny, but I made it! I turned the corner mommy turned, and there she wa-
“Mommy? Mommy? Where’d you go mommy?” I wept. A tiny trickle of a tear fell down my cheek. It rolled down till it fell on my shoulder, staining my pink shirt with wetness. I looked at it, it looked like a pony.
“Woah! Where’d you get that?!” exclaimed a little boy behind me. I turned, he had brown hair and eyes, and his eyes were sticking out like a bug directly at my pony book.
“I found it in the little girls section. It has white ponies, but they aren’t suppose to be white. You’re suppose to color them so they can have colors.” I explained. My grip on the book tightened, I wasn’t going to let this little boy take my ponies.
“Cool! I want one! I’m going to have a black pony when I grow up. His name is going to be buddy, just like my dog. That way they can be buddies together!” he chirped. Has he seen my mommy?
“Have you seen my mommy?”
“No. Sorry. I have to go, my mommies leaving,” we said our goodbyes and parted our separate ways.
I tip toed to the candy section. Maybe mommies buying me candy for when I’m a good girl. I turned the corner, miles high was mountains of chocolate and skittles and gum drops and nerdies and lollipops, but when I looked closer, mommy wasn’t there! If I didn’t find mommy, I just found out where I’d be living for the next few years.
I made my way to the middle of the aisle when I heard wrappers shifting. To my right, sat a red headed boy with glasses the size of mommys fist. He was munching on a tiny box of nerdies, his mommy wasn’t paying much attention, cause there was 5 more boxes laying at his feet.
“Have you seen my mommy?” I asked.
“I don’t know, and I don’t care, nah nah nah” he teased. That was enough of him, I’ll kick him out when I move in. I don’t want any nerdie stealers or mean boys in my house. I lifted my chin and skipped off with my ponies.
Not paying attention to where I was going, I smacked into a big lady. She had on a red shirt and khaki pants. When she stopped and knelt down next to me, I saw she had on a necklace with a card on it. The card had a picture of her on it and some weird art.
“Well hello there little one, where are you headed?” she asked kindly. She had a sweet voice, it reminded me of candyland.
“Have you seen my mommy?” I asked, giving off my best Puss in Boots impression. She giggled.
“I don’t know, why don’t you come with me to the front so we can see if she’ll show up. Does that sound okay with you?” I nodded, and she took me to the front where the cashiers worked. She lead me behind a counter with a moving belt and picked up a phone. “Here, why don’t you talk into this phone and ask if the store knows where your mommy went.” She pointed to the phone and put it in my hands.
It was big and heavy, but I lifted it to my face and asked, “Have you seen my mommy?” I could hear myself in the background, it was weird, but the store didn’t respond. The candyland lady told me to tell the store that I was in the front of it, so I did. After that she took the phone and hung it up. From there she led me to the wall and sat down next to me.
“Why don’t we wait here and see if the store finds your mommy okay?” I nodded. I liked this lady, she was nice.
“Do you want to come to my house and play candyland with me?” I asked. She giggled again, but told me she wasn’t allowed because her friends would get mad that she had an awesome friend like me and they didn’t. I grinned. She said I’m awesome.
My teacher gave me a sticker that was green with red and yellow and blue on it. My mommy told me that it said “You’re awesome!” on it. I put the sticker on my bed post so I could admire it every night.
I heard a familiar footstep pattern behind me. When I turned, I saw light blue jeans and white sneakers. I had to look up, but after the black shirt, I saw my mommy. She had on a smile, and she bent down and hugged me tight.
“Mommy, you’re squeezing me too tight!” I breathed.
“I’m sorry, honey,” she whispered, “I just missed you so much!”
“Look what I have!” I showed her my pony book, “can I get it?” Mommy examined it, opening it and flipping through some of the pages. She made a sound from her throat like she usually does when shes thinking.
“Because you were such a good girl today and went to the store for help, and I missed you so much, I will. But, you have to be good for the rest of the week okay?” She glared at me, I looked her back in the eye and made a promise. So mommy thanked the candyland lady and paid for the pony book. I was happy.
“Oh no! I forgot something!” Stopping right in front of the exit doors I ran back to the candyland lady, I couldn’t leave without giving her a hug. So I squeezed her tight, and we parted ways. When we got home, mommy and me played candyland, and I colored one of my ponies like a lollipop. I named her candyland.
