βKatieβs Fallβ
A short story by
Michelle Alexis
1
As Katie walked through the front gate of the school, she wondered if she had made the right decision choosing this school. The school was one of the best schools in the state; this was one of the things that had drawn Katie. She had begged her parents since the day they told her they were moving. She could even sleep the night before. The school looked like a fresh painting, with its modern design and striking colours. She walked through the school and found the assembly hall packed with students and teachers. She scanned the hall and noticed something. Everybody knew each other, and she knew no one. The thought struck her hard, but she put it aside. A loud and disturbing noise erupted. It took some moments for Katie to realize that it was the school bell. Katie grasps the fact that they were being dismissed to their classes.
βHow peculiarβ, she thought.
She was expecting a warm welcome from the Principal. She followed a group of students out of the hall.

The next day, Katie found herself sitting alone for lunch. The cafeteria was crowded, even though some students chose to sit outside. It was also a cacophony of loud chatter. Each table sat teenagers huddling up, raising their voices to be heard above the uproar. She was off in a daze when suddenly she caught a group of teenagers looking at her. They quickly turned around when Katie caught them. Katie blinked, slightly blushing and surprised. She could somehow hear the giggling of the girls. The boys peeked over at her every now and then, with grins on their faces.
After finishing her lunch, Katie stood up from the table. Out of nowhere, a girl stood in front of her. She jolted back in surprise. Katie looked at her from top to bottom. She was pretty and had a great, slim figure. Her light brown hair was tied up in a high ponytail. Her face was caked with make-up; her almond-shaped eyes were covered with black eye shadow. Her lips were small and pout, also covered in layers of nude lipstick. She was slightly taller than Katie, and she had curves. She waved her long slim arm. Katie snapped out of her observation. The girl said,
βHi, my name is Sasha. Nice to meet you.β
All Katie could do was stare. The girl stood there, waiting for Katieβs answer.A few moments later, Katie croaked,
βIβm Katie.β

Katie sat silently and watched the group as they were in deep discussion. Sasha had invited Katie to sit with the group. They were talking about ehat they should do for the weekend. The boy with blond hair and blue eyes suggested that they should go to an all-ages club and sneak in some alcohol. Then, a girl who looked exactly the same as the boy, who Katie thought must be his twin, suggested that they should go to the beach instead. Katie looked around the table. She was looking at the end of the table when she caught the other boy staring ar her. He looked away quickly. She took the chance to observe him. He has light brown eyes and dark fine hair. His jawline was angular and he looked like something out of a fairytale.
"So Katie, what do you think?", Sasha asked.
Katie who had not been listening instantly said,
"Yeah sure, sounds fun."
4That weekend they picked her up and drove toward the city. Katie had told her parents that she was going out with a bunch of friends. Her parents were squealing like little kids on a christmas morning. They were passing the bridge that let to the city. Katie had found out that the blonde girl and boy were twins. Their names were Maddie and Kyle. Right after the bell rang for the end of lunch, the boy with light brown had introduced himself. His name was Jordan, he had said. He was riding shotgun, and Kyle was driving carefully, his eyes were glued on the road. They were entering the city now. Katie was in awe as she watch the city glowed. For once, she felt alive and excited. She had never been to the city with her friends. It was either she did not have any friends or her friends' parents were protective. Or maybe it's just an excuse her friend gave her. A few minutes later, Kyled parked in front of an all-ages club called Pandemonium.
5They got out of the car and Sasha went in to buy tickets. Katie wished she had chosen a better outfit instead of jeans, sneakers and a plain t-shirt. Suddenly, Jordan was standing beside her. He was wearing kaki pants and a black, button down shirt. He looked classy, elegant. Katie liked guys who dressed well. He was looking away and Katie, yet again, took the chance to observe him. For some reason, she found him beautiful, like a fallen angel. He turned around and caught her. He smiled a little. He put his hands in his pockets. He said,
"So, what do you think?"
Katie, too stunned to reply, croaked,
"Of what?"
"The city."
He looked up at the sky, and then back at her and said,
"You look like you've never been here before."
"Well, I have never been here", she lied.
He looked surprised and said,
Well then, I should take you here more often."
Katie blushed at that. He said I. Him. Only him. She blushed even harder. Sasha came back with the tickets and distributed them. Katie walked towards the entrance and hesitated. She shrugged and gave the bouncer her ticket.
6As Katie entered the club, the smell of sweat and smoke instatly assaulted her nostrils as she inhaled deeply. She looked around and saw the dancefloor. It looked inviting and mesmerising. Out of her will she slowly walked towards it. Katie jolted when she felt a hand grabbing hers. Katie traced the owner of the hand only to find Jordan. He looked at her and smiled. Without hesitation, he pulled her along with him. They had to squeeze through a sea of sweating bodies.
They finally found a spot. Katie stood there; her head hung low. She felt nervous. Jordan looked at her with a blank face and asked,
"What's wrong? Do you want a drink?"
Katie looked up and nodded.
"Okay, I'll be right back", and he was gone.
Katie felt nauseous. She had never been in a place where it was so crammed. Music was blasting in her ears. The ground shoook beneath her feet. For some reason, her body started moving to the rhythm. She slowly close her eyes and let the music took her. A few moments later, Jordan came back with two red plastic cups. Katie took it and sniffed. Beer.
"Thanks", she said and smiled for the first time that night.
"Are you enjoying yourself?", Jordan was screaming.
"Yes!", Katie yelled back. "It's really loud though!"
Jordan laughed, his voice inaudible. He looked at her with glassy and dancing eyes. He placed his hands on her waist, and moved her with him. Soon, they were two souls, sharing a body.
