It was the wrong house. I canโt believe I came all this way for nothing. I check over my shoulder sure that Iโm being watched. Will this feeling of paranoia ever go away? Itโs been four years since the last attack, but you never knowโฆ
I hurry down the street and cast worried eyes to the sky. Clouds are darkening, throwing ominous shadows my way. Just as I think it couldnโt get anymore gloomy rain begins to sheet down on my bare face. My mouth pulls down in a pout and I quickly chide myself for being so childish.
Almost there now. The lights for the second story window are visible from where I stand over a block away. Lightning flashes and a nearby child starts to cry. His mother hurries him into a house, safe and warm. My attention is suddenly snatched away by a dark jeep pulling up next to me. The windows are tinted.
Adrenaline slams through my veins sending my heart into overdrive. Before the door can open I dart into the road. I run full throttle to the nearest yard and hop a fence. I donโt care if I am being paranoid, itโs worth it if my fears are correct.
One more yard and Iโve made it. One more yard and I can make sure sheโs okay. Nothing else matters right now.
My fingers slip through the unfamiliar trellis and I hesitate. My ears prick trying to pick up the small noises coming from inside the house. Itโs probably just her, fighting sleep again. I shake my head and get a better grip. Then I hear it. A scream that makes my blood run cold.
Despite my beat efforts, despite avoiding her and throwing suspicion off her trail a thousand and one times theyโve still found her. But I canโt let another one die. Not this one.
I climb the trellis to face my destiny head on.
