I wrote the words ‘shadow’, ‘lightning’, and ‘constable’ in my notebook. I didn’t even know what the last one meant. Something about a warden in a castle. I glanced up from my desk to my ELA teacher, who was now talking about the prefix of the word, and where it came from. I should be paying attention, but my mind was elsewhere. Plus, I think I had done enough so far to not pay attention.
I couldn’t stop thinking about the weird feeling I had. It started this morning, and now it keeps getting worse. It felt like….well I don’t even know. I don’t even know if its good or bad, just that I should be looking for something. As if, if I didn’t something bad would happen. Sure, bad things always happen everyday to me, but this is different. I started to wonder if it was Gabe I should worry about. I’m always tense around him, not to mention frightened. But I’ve been living with him for three years. So that can’t be it. Can it?
“Mary,” I was instantly snapped out of my daze. Mrs. Terry had called on me to answer the question. Oh great. The one time I choose to zone out. I quickly skimmed the board, and got caught up.
“To come together,” I answered, my voice not as loud as I had hoped. I think its physically impossible to be loud for me. She nodded and continued with the lesson. She had been asking for the meaning of the prefix, ‘con’. How would constable fit that? Together stable? Sounds kind of right. Being a warden and all. But isn’t constable referring to one warden? So, that doesn’t make sense. Unless its- okay, thinking this over too much.
The door opened, and a guy came in. His dark brown hair covered his ears and forehead, curling at the end, and his gray-blue eyes scanned the room quickly, flickering from face to face. What was he looking for? He had a pink late pass in his right hand, a binder in the other. New student?
When his eyes stopped on me, I froze. I felt trapped there. A cold shiver ran down my spine and I had to look down at my desk, for fear of passing out. Even my heart was beating frantically. My mind was telling me to run. When I glanced at everyone else, they seemed to have the same reaction.
“Anthony, please take a seat in an empty desk. I will arrange for your permanent seat later,” Mrs. Terry said. He even seemed to have an affect on her, I noticed when her voice wavered. The guy, Anthony came down through the rows of seats, I stiffened when he walked past me. But he didn’t stop, he took the seat two behind mine. The sent of wet grass filled the air around me. Surprisingly, it seemed to ease my tensed muscles. I always loved the smell of grass. Don’t ask me why.
I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up under his gaze. Feeling uneasy, I rubbed neck, trying to calm myself. I could practically hear his breathing, it felt like he was right next to me.
