and clenched his teeth. He was shaking so hard, my hand was vibrating. “Jake,” I whispered, tears foolishly coming to my eyes. “Don’t be such a cry baby Nessie,” Jacob said and turned to me with a heartwarming smile and stroked my face. I couldn’t hold back my smile, even though it was probably ugly, and leaned my head into his palm. After a moment of silence, I spoke. “Where did that come from?” Jacob stared at the dirt road as we drove past the little shop, which looked awfully empty, toward his house. “I’ve been thinking of it since the moment your Mom called me, all panicked…I just can’t believe I wasn’t there to protect you…” he whispered. I watched Jacob pull into his drive way and closed his eyes in concentration. “Jake,” I whispered and touched his face. I waited until he looked at me. “What’s wrong,” I asked and looked deep into his eyes. Jacob opened his mouth to say something but there was a bang on the car. We both looked up and saw Embry and Sarah at the door, waiting for us, and a shoe on the front of the car. I smiled back and turned to Jacob. He smiled but it wasn’t a real one, and before I could say anything, he was out of the car and walking toward them. I sat, dumbfounded. Why was he so touchy!? I mean yeah, I almost died, not him! I hadn’t noticed that Sarah had walked over to the car and opened my door until she touched me. I gasped. “I didn’t mean to scare you; I thought you saw me coming?” She questioned. I smiled and said “Uh yeah, just was thinking about something.” “Come on, were all waiting for you,” Sarah said and smiled. We walked to the door and as she opened the door I said “Um, well actually, I have to get going, but it was good to see you.” “What? Why?” Sarah complained. I could hear them all in the back, laughing and chatting and I knew Jacob would come searching for me soon, which meant I had to hurry up. “Um, college applications,” I said lamely, I didn’t want her to have to worry about me and Jacob; she was having a good time. Sarah sighed but said “Okay, I’ll see you this Friday though right?” I grimaced, not completely sure how things were going to turn out. “Maybe,” I finally answered. Sarah noticed I was a bit irritated and unsure and just let me go, but only after I promised that we would hang out. I got in the car and floored it as soon as I could. I didn’t want to go home, but I didn’t have anywhere else to go. Ugh. Then I remembered Blake. I flipped my phone on and scrolled down the list and found Blake; I got it one day when he was talking to a friend, don’t really know why though. I looked at his name and number and couldn’t help but feel a little weird. What would he say? I started to chicken out when Jacob called. I bit my lip, unsure. Should I answer or ignore it? My hand was frozen for just a second but then I clicked off the sound. Jacob’s name kept coming up, but I didn’t hear it anymore, and for some reason, I felt better. After Jacob stopped calling, I dialed Blake’s number and pressed the send button. I bit my lip as it rang and secretly hoped he wouldn’t answer. It went to voice mail…ugh. “Can’t answer, call another time,” Blake’s voice said and then there was the beep to leave a message. “Um…hey Blake, it’s me Renesmee,” I said not really sure what to say. “Well um…yeah, call me back?” I wanted to punch myself in the face! Why would I call Blake!?! Out of all people, Blake! REALLY!? Ugh! I quickly hung up the phone and touched my cheek; it was really hot. I frowned, not sure where to go when my phone rang. I really didn’t want to pick it up, it was probably Jacob, but I did anyways. I did so without looking at the name and just answered. “What?” I sighed. “Renesmee?” Blake asked surprised. I froze. That was fast. I quickly put my thoughts together and answered Blake. “Uh yeah, it’s me,” I said. “Um, well how’s your day been?” Blake said, almost too fast, like he had been hoping for this day for a while. “Not the best, how about you?” I asked. “It’s been bland,” he replied. Then the conversation kinda died. “So…was there a specific reason why you called me?” Blake asked softly, careful of how he said it; Smart boy. I sighed; I really didn’t want to talk about it. “Uh…” I said. And then, I chickened out. “Um, well actually, I’m not really sure why I called, sorry,” I said, wishing I could just die! I was such a dope! “Well if there’s nothing, I have to go,” Blake said with impatience. Aw, he was mad at me. “Sorry,” I whispered. “Have a good day Renesemee,” Blake said and hung up. I pulled into a rest area and put my head on the steering wheel. Now what was I gonna do? I didn’t want to go home with Mom and Dad; I really wasn’t in the best mood. I didn’t want to deal with Jacob right now either, I knew it was only a matter of time until we had to face each other and fix this damned problem, but I really didn’t have it in me right now. I sighed and turned my head and stared out the window. Two birds flew around following one another. Then I acted on impulse. I pulled my iPhone from the cup holder and went to the student inventory, found the address I wanted and then started driving. Logic tried to break through the craziness but I blocked it all out and just kept driving. Finally I pulled up to a large white house. I drove up and parked. Logic was starting to break through, so I had to act quickly. I quickly shut down the car and ran up the stairs and rang the door bell. As I waited, logic finally burst through the walls of insanity. “REALLY?! BLAKE’S HOUSE??? ARE YOU STUPID?!” I yelled at myself. “Why would you do this? You know it’s gonna give him the wrong impression Renesmee!” Logic screamed at me. I sighed and before I could answer back, the door opened and before me stood an older woman. She was average sized, pale, with startling green eye’s and golden hair so shiny it look like gold silk with sliver silk intertwined. Over all, she was still quite beautiful. “How may I help you?” She asked in a pleasant voice. I bit my lip not sure. What did I want? I sighed and ruffled my hair with my hand, not sure how to answer. She waited. I looked apologetically at her and said “I’m sorry but I’m not exactly sure what I want,” and added a slightly shaky laugh. She didn’t laugh so I continued. “Well, er, I’m not crazy, I’m just not exactly sure why I came here...” I stopped blabbing; I sounded mental. I sighed loudly again and closed my eyes. “I’m sorry, I’m not having a very good day,” I apologized. “What’s your name child?” She asked me. I looked up to see her smiling kindly at me, much like my Grandma Renee or Granma Esme would. “Renesmee,” I said, uncovering my eyes. She smiled and said “I’m Alana.” I hadn’t ever seen her had I…I’m sure I wouldn’t have forgotten her face nor her smile. “You haven’t met me child,” Alana guessed and chuckled. I smiled back. “Come in and take a seat child,” Alana said and moved to the side of the door, allowing some space for me to enter. I wanted too but couldn’t. I shook my head and said “Oh no, I’m fine really.” Alana looked at me strangely as if to say ‘Then why are you here?’ I sighed and looked around. “Can I just sit here? Like right here for a while? I won’t cause any trouble I promise,” I pleaded. Alana stared at me for a bit, taking in my expression and thinking it through. Finally she answered. “And you wouldn’t want me to inform Blake of you…er…staying, am I correct?” Alana asked. I shook my head furiously and said “Please, just between you and I.” Alana looked at me for a bit longer, ducked in for a few seconds and came back out with a bottle of water and a pack of cookies. “Here you are child,” Alana said as she handed me the water and cookies. I took them, but hesitantly. “Thank you so much but I don’t need,“ I stopped. Alana was giving me the look that said ‘Just shut up and take it.’ I smiled thankfully at her and said “Thank you, really.” Alana smiled and started to say something when I heard Blake’s voice. Alana stepped back into the house and before closing the door completely, winked at me. I smiled and laughed quietly to myself and sat down on the steps. I sighed and placed my face in my hands and just stared at the sky turning pink, orange, purple and then a mixture of all. I refused to think of anything except breathing in and out, I was so calm here, no need to mess it up. I knew I should be going home, but I didn’t want to leave, childishly, I didn’t want to face my problems. Just thinking of that made me laugh a small laugh. And then I sighed and leaned against the cold metal rail. Of course that was exactly what I was going to have to do, go back and face Jacob. I sighed just thinking the words. I was so absorbed I didn’t notice that someone was standing beside me until the person moved. I gasped and backed away and as the shock disappeared, embarrassment flooded my cheeks. Blake looked out toward the setting sun with a hand shoved in his pocket. “What a lovely sun set,” Blake murmured and turned to look at me. I got up, embarrassed and looked away. “Uh, yeah…” I said, chuckling nervously. We stood there for a quiet moment when he finally spoke. “I heard the doorbell ring and when I asked Alana who it was, she nervously said no one and then I look out the window and saw a very familiar car and a very familiar girl…” Blake said with humor. My face had to be redder than a lobster. “I uh…needed sometime alone,” I finally answered, looking down. Was he going to call the cops? I could see Grandpa Charlie pulling up to arrest me. “Well then,” Blake spoke and handed me a bright orange flower. “Come on in,” and smiled. I took the flower and walked to the door with Blake. Entering the house, I saw lots of paintings, intricate and beautiful pieces, some of which I could smell of the origins. France, Japan, Italy, and Germany were the main scents. Looking at them, they had to be expensive. “My Father is a portrait collector,” Blake answered, smiling at my intrigued expression. I smiled back but looked back to the closes painting to me. “Paris d'en haut,” Paris from above, was the name for this one. Below, the water glittered and disappeared under a bridge that led to the boutiques with colorful signs and interesting clothing. “Wow,” I gasped, looking at the amount of detail, I mean every nook and crack was visible. “Father always chose the best,” Blake mumbled with chagrin. I turned to look at him. He wasn’t looking at me; he was looking intently at a different painting. I walked over to look at it.
