I smiled. “Of course, duh!”
Thomas and Seb shook their heads as we all walked backto the room where Sloane was supposed to be waiting.
Only he wasn’t there.
Chapter 9
Seb
Sloane couldn’t have disappeared at the worst time. We were all ready to go, handing him the tiny pieces of paper we found, when hewas nowhere in sight.
“Mr. Sloane,” I called out loudly. “Where are you?”
Kaley immediately began calling him on her phone.
Thomas checked to see if his briefcase was stillthere. It was.
“He has to be here somewhere,” Thomas said.
“Hey guys,” a familiar voice said from behind us.
I turned around and frown.
Sutton was standing there, big and tall, in the middleof the lobby. And Sloane was right next to him.
“Sutton!” Kaley called out, walking to him. “Why areyou here?”
“Checking up on everyone,” Sutton said. “Especiallyon my girl, Kaley, here.” He pulled her up to him and planted a big kiss on herlips.
Man, I wanted to punch him for that. The guy was acaveman. He couldn’t keep his hands off Kaley. And his lips.
“Actually,” Sloane said. “I called him.”
“What?” Kaley asked. “Why?”
Sloane looked stoic and dead serious then. “I wantedhim around for protection.”
Kaley, Thomas, Ash, and I looked at each other.
“Why?” Kaley asked. “Do you think something dangerousis going to happen?”
Sloane kept his eyes on all of us. “Yes.”
“Oh boy,” Ash said.
“I see you have each solved the puzzle for Part 2 sowe will go on next to Part 3,” Sloane said. “Come on back to the room where mybriefcase is.” He looked over at Sutton. “I would like to have law enforcementnear me when I read the next part of the will.”
Now I was getting worried. Why would Sloane fear forhis life by reading the next part of the will?
What the hell could be so devastating that Sloanewould need to call Sutton for protection?
Chapter 10
Kaley
I walked into the library room where Sloane had set upthe reading of the will earlier. It was one of my favorite rooms in thehouse because of all the books lining the entire walls of the room.
I loved books. All kinds of books. Every kind of books.I would read them all. This library was my sanctuary and place of freedom whenI wanted to escape my reality and let my mind wander into different worlds.
I looked over at Thomas, whom I had now gotten closerto, emotionally and physically. I knew this was one of his favorite rooms too.We were on the same level when it came to intellectual pursuits. That was oneof the strongest connections I had with him, besides the incredible physicalanimalistic chemistry we shared.
At the corner of my eye, I saw Ash settled into thecorner of the leather sofa that had always been my favorite place to read. Heknew it too, patting the seat next to him as he looked up at me expectantly.
I walked over and sat down next to him. Immediately, his leg closest to me leaned closer to touch me, and his hand nonchalantlybrushed against mine. I knew he wanted to hold my hand. I could feel theprotectiveness in every inch of his body.
“Don’t worry,” he whispered to me. “Whatever’s coming,I’ll protect you.”
“I’m worried for you guys, more than me,” I whisperedback.
“At least Dad liked you,” Ash said softly. “Me? Not somuch.”
I didn’t say anything as Seb walked over to standbehind me, his arms crossed in front of him. He had a frown on his face, whichlooked like he was ready to fight a war.
It mirrored the look that was on Sutton’s face. Helooked like he was on alert. But what he was on alert for, I couldn’t tell.
Instead of standing close to Sloane, as if to protecthim, Sutton was positioned by the door of the library with a clear view to thefront door of the manor.
He was watching for anything to happen outside of theroom. Not like someone who was called in to protect the person he was supposedto protect.
No, he wasn’t protecting Sloane from the Keystones inthe library, he was protecting all of us from something else.
I had to talk to him.
I pulled out my phone and text him.
KALEY: What’s up? Are we in danger?
SUTTON: Yeah. New intel.
KALEY: Why Sloane?
SUTTON: He’s the messenger.
KALEY: Don’t kill the messenger.
SUTTON: I don’t envy his job. Dirty business dealingwith the Keystones. But yeah, I have an idea what is coming up. Plus, this nextpart…
Sloane cleared his throat and said, “Let’sbegin Part 3.”
He took out a piece of paper and said, “Ihave here a piece of paper that Clay had been keeping for years. It is a pieceof paper from a lab.”
He took out another piece of paper and said,“This is another document from the lab. The same time Clay received the otherpiece of paper.”
“I’m sorry to say, one of you is not Clay’sbiological sons. Your mother is your mother, but your father is…” Sloane gulpedand then took a sip of his coffee. He reached for the second piece of paper hehad brought out. “Your biological father is…”
As if on cue, there was a loud banging onthe front door enough to wake the dead.
Sutton left to go check out the door. Sebwent with him. Ash and Thomas stood up. Ash picked up a baseball bat from thecloset, while Thomas disappeared into Mr. Keystone’s study.
Seb checked the viewfinder and turned to us,“the traveling salesmen and his buddies are back… only he’s brought morebuddies.”
Shit. The mobsters were back.
“What do we do?” Ash asked.
Sutton said, “Stand back. I’ll handle this.”
He opened the door to talk to the mobsters, but as soon as the door opened, Sutton was jumped by two men from the side ofthe door, blindsided as he went down.
They pushed into the manor, quicklydisarming Ash from his baseball bat, and Seb from the gun he had taken out frominside his jacket.
“Well well,” the older man with the pockmarks on his face said. “Looks like you’re right on track with the reading ofthe
