βNo way in hell,β the knight said. βWeβre looking for James Cullen Fraser. Have you seen him?β
The question was like a punch in the gut.
Damn. Theyβre here.
She knewβ¦or hopedβ¦that sooner or later, someone would show up to take her back to the future, but not today. She wasnβt ready. But why were they here? If they stopped by Elkhorn Ranch, Mrs. Sewall would have told them JC went to Kentucky.
βIt depends on whoβs asking,β she said.
βJCβs my cousin,β the knight said. βMy mother married his half brother Kevin.β
Ensley cocked her head and looked into those damn green eyes again, and she shivered at the intensity of his glare. βThe way I understand family trees, that makes him your uncle, not your cousin.β
The knight gave her a blank look. βHeβs younger and shorter. I refuse to call him uncle.β
What an asshat.
JC had dozens of cousins, so she wasnβt surprised she hadnβt met this one, and with his attitude, she was glad she hadnβt.
She needed to talk to them and didnβt want Norman hanging on her every word while his finger twitched near the trigger. She turned her horse around and said in a low voice to him, βIβm safe with them. The tall guy is my husbandβs cousin. Iβve never met him, but I have to explain why James Cullen went to Kentucky without me. You can go on. Iβll only be a few minutes.β
Norman glowered at the three men. βI donβt know, Miss Ensley. They donβt look so reputable.β
She turned to look back at the men. βThey donβt, do they? Well, Iβll just shoot them if they misbehave. Howβs that?β
Norman plunked down on the bench seat, stored his rifle, then picked up the reins. βIf I hear gunfire, Iβll come back and help ya bury βem.β He snapped the reins. βGit-up.β And the wagon rolled away. βIβm goinβ slow,β he called over his shoulder. βAnd Iβm not lettinβ ya outta my sight.β
βIβll be right behind you.β She hoped she hadnβt made a mistake trusting these guys. Just in case, she didnβt lower her rifle. βLetβs walk the horses so Norman wonβt worry.β She maneuvered Tesoro in line with the others. βSo the big guy is James Cullenβs cousin. Who are you two?β
βIβm Tavis Stuart, a distant cousin of the Frasers and VP of Global Security for MacCorp.β
βAre you a Marine? You look like one.β
βNavy SEAL.β
βIs that once a SEAL always a SEAL?β
He gave her a heart-melting smile. βSomething like that, maβam.β
She leaned forward and looked at the guy on the other end, riding the bay. βWho are you? You sound like youβre from New Orleans.β
βOriginally, yeah, and Iβm not a cousin. Nameβs Remy Benoit. Iβm Elliott Fraserβs personal EMT and bodyguard.β
Ensley looked behind her. βWhere is he?β
βWho?β Remy asked.
βDr. Fraser. If youβre his bodyguard, shouldnβt you be guarding him?β
Remy smiled, and she honestly couldnβt decide who was sexierβRemy or Tavis. They both had killer smiles. But if the knight could manage one, his just might be sexier than the other two.
βElliott and his wife traveled back to MacKlenna Farm. We had no idea where you would end upβhere or there. So we drew the long straw.β
βThis was the long straw? Good God.β She returned her rifle to its scabbard, confident now that the men wouldnβt harm her. βYou know you could be sipping mint juleps at the farm. Instead, youβll end up participating in a roundup.β
βThe hell we are.β The knight then said to Tavis, βIf Elliott wanted me to go on an adventure, why in the hell didnβt he take me with him?β
βWhy would he want to? Youβre an asshole,β Remy said.
Ensley covered her mouth to stifle the laugh gurgling up. βWhatβs your name, JCβs cousin?β
βAustin OβGrady,β he grumbled.
Her eyes nearly bugged out of her head. Surely not.
This canβt be the same man who sent me a manuscript. The same man I told to resubmit when he got his life figured out. The same man I didnβt google.
βThe basketball player?β she asked.
βYeah, so what?β
Of all people. Did his agent mention my name?
βAh, no reason.β She snuck a quick look at Tavis, and he winked. Why? Was it a sign or signal, or was he flirting with her?
βYou know who I am,β Austin said. βSo, who the hell are you?β
βYour attitude sucks. But you know that already, right?β Thereβd been an inkling of regret that she might have rejected his manuscript too quickly. But if sheβd known about his attitude, she would have put the rejection in a special delivery envelope marked extra-special delivery. The thought of working with him repulsed her. Why the hell did they even bring him along?
βI donβt care what you think about my attitude. I just asked who the hell you are.β
βChill,β Tavis said.
She guided her horse over a little bit to get out of the fight zone before the Navy SEAL challenged the knight to a fight to the death. When the challenge didnβt come, she said, βIβm a friend of JCβs. We went to Harvard together, and my cousin is one of his best friends.β
βWhatβs his name?β
βGeorge Williams.β
βI think Iβve met him before. He came to a game with JC when we played at Madison Square Garden a few years ago. Is he a Wall Street guy?β
βYep. He works at Morgan Stanley.β
Austin dropped back, then rode up next to Ensley, sandwiching her between him and Tavis. Her horse was almost as tall as Tavisβs, but the two men still dwarfed her, and she almost felt like their prisoner.
Norman was maybe twenty-five yards ahead of them and would hear her if she screamed, but sheβd feel better if he was closer. She nudged Tesoro with her knees, and he moved into a trot. The men did the same.
βSo you traveled with JC?β Austin asked.
βNo. He came after me.β
βWhyβd he do that? I mean, howβd he know youβd traveled back here? When women go missing the way you did, Elliott calls a family meeting and tells us whatβs going on.
