βChris Dalton. He was a six-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player, ten scoring titles, five MVP Awardsββ
βOkay, I donβt follow sports, but even I get that his father was a special player. He must have taken Austinβs accident especially hard.β
βChris was there for Austin. As soon as the doctors released him to practice, Chris was on the court with him every day. But it only reminded Austin of what he lost, so he locked his father out, too.β
βI can see everyone giving Austin a break, but his behavior would get old fast. Iβve only been around him a few minutes, and heβs already worn out his welcome with me.β
βYeah, I know. Iβll do what I can to keep him away from you.β
βIβd appreciate it. Iβd like to enjoy the rest of the time I have here with TR.β
βHow long have you been here? And whyβd you and JC split up?β
βJC said his family would rescue us, but he didnβt know when. And he was worried about having enough money. He had gold nuggets but thought weβd be better off with more. So he wanted to go to MacKlenna Farm and borrow some from Braham McCabeβs secret stash.β
Tavis chuckled. βItβs a good idea. But why didnβt you go?β
βI grew up here just a few miles from the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. As a kid, I was a Junior Ranger. Iβd walk around the park and have imaginary conversations with Teddy. And right now, I can have conversations in person. I didnβt want to leave. Roosevelt said he was going back to New York City in a couple of weeks, so the three of us made plans to travel together. JCβs meeting us in Cleveland, and weβll all take the train to New York.β
βHe didnβt count on his parents coming after him. Theyβll insist he go home with them.β
βHe wonβt go. We talked about it, and he promised me time with TR. Iβm going to hold him to it.β She glanced behind her to see where Austin and Remy were. βYou winked at me. Was that a βweβre in cahoots togetherβ wink?β
βI know you rejected Austinβs manuscript, and I didnβt want you to say anything. He was pretty ticked about it, and probably still is. I wouldnβt bring it up.β
βI wonβt, but you make it sound like I broke his heart. Heβs got a big enough ego to survive a rejection letter.β
βMaybe at one time, but not now.β
They had slowed down while they chatted, and now Remy and Austin caught up with them.
βSo, what are we going to do?β Austin asked. βGo home now that we have her?β
βErggg.β
βWe canβt leave until we hear from JC,β Tavis said.
βI agree,β she said.
βWe need to send a telegram to the farm to make sure heβs there and let Elliott know weβre with you. Whereβs the closest Western Union?β
βProbably Medora,β Ensley said. βItβs about thirty-five miles south of Elkhorn Ranch. You all can do that while I go on the roundup with TR.β
βNo, baby doll. Weβre all going,β Austin said.
βWhatβd you call me?β
βBaby doll. Youβre five-two, blue eyes, blond hair. Yep, a baby doll.β
Her cheeks heated, and she had to be careful not to strangle Tesoro with the reins. βYou. Are. A. Total. Asshat. Iβve got to go. TR will wonder what happened to me.β
βWait a minute,β Tavis said. βWeβve got to send a telegram. So whoβs going?β
βWe shouldnβt split up,β Remy said. βLook whatβs happened here. JC left Ensley. Now weβre here, and we donβt know for sure where he is.β
βIβll go, then,β Tavis said. βI need to update Elliott anyway. Iβll take Austin with me, and weβll be back tomorrow evening.β
βIβm not going! You want to go, go! Iβm staying put,β Austin said.
Remy looked at Austin, and his upper lip curled. βYouβre an asshole.β Then to Tavis, he asked, βIf you leave, how will you find us?β
βIβll probably hear Austin bitching from a mile away.β
βJC said he would send a telegram when he got there. He planned to hire someone in Medora to deliver it to me, but I havenβt received one. Chances are the person took JCβs money, and the telegram is still waiting there for me. Will you ask?β
βOf course,β Tavis said.
Ensley looked at his lathered black stallion. He couldnβt possibly ride to Medora on his Thoroughbred. βTake Tesoro. Heβs built for endurance, and I havenβt ridden him hard today.β
βNone better than an Akhal-Teke. Whereβd you get him?β
βI think Erik sold him to TR, but nobody could ride him but me, so I donβt know if heβll let you.β
βHe will,β Tavis said. βI normally wouldnβt borrow someone elseβs horse, but in this situation, yours looks fresher than mine.β He hesitated a moment. βIβll take you up on the offer.β
She dismounted and unsaddled Tesoro. Then she kissed his forehead. βIβll see you soon.β
Tavis put his saddle on Tesoro, then saddled his horse with Ensleyβs tack. βRemy, leave me some signs. And Iβll see you guys tomorrow.β
Ensley folded her arms, watching Tavis as he mounted Tesoro, and waited for him to buck. But he didnβt. Tesoro remained as still for Tavis as he did for her.
Tavis settled into the saddle and patted the horseβs neck. βArthfael, run like the wind.β The horse flicked his ears then reared in a perfect hi-yo Silver. That made her think of her mom again. She loved old TV shows, and she loved them most of all when Ensley watched them with her.
Ensley yelled. βWhat does Arthfael mean?β
Tesoro galloped off, and Tavis yelled back, ββBear strength.β See you in twenty-four hours.β
The sun glinted off her golden horse as he grew smaller and smaller until he was just a dot on the horizon. βWhyβd he call my horse by a different name?β
Remy shrugged. βTavis is as mysterious as Erik. Come on. Letβs go find your hero.β
She was surprised by the grief that overwhelmed her. She was unsettled, and it wasnβt just the loss of her horse. βI donβt even know his horseβs name.β
βItβs Ferdiad,β
