I drop my hands, taking a few steps away. My eyes flit to the intact wall and I shudder away the memories of removing all of those stones. βWhen I was in there, everything began to shake, like there was an earthquake or something. Nothing was making sense and I was scared I wouldnβt find my way out. Thenβ¦β
βThen?β he presses.
βThen there was you. And here I am,β I say, shrugging.
Wadeβs face brightens at first, then falters. βWe have more problems. I feel stupid even bringing it up to you after all of this, but I have to.β His lips tug downward and he runs his hands through his dark hair.
My forehead creases and my heart suddenly feels like it might beat out of my chest. βWhat is it? Whatβs wrong?β
He exhales a jagged breath. βI was at home when I got a knock on the door. I thought it was you at first. I know how hard everything has been and the tension thatβs come between us after all of this shitβ¦but obviously, it wasnβt. It was Chelsea.β
βOkay?β I say, watching as he shoves his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket. My emotions burn under the surface as I try not to jump to any conclusions.
βYou know how she isβsheβs like a magnet for supernatural news, thanks to Sheriff Gordon,β he begins.
I release a slow breath and nod. βI do.β
Wadeβs tongue skirts across his lower lip and he says, βWell, you know the revenants we killed?β
Instantly, I know where heβs going with this. βThey reanimated.β It wasnβt a question.
Wadeβs eyebrows scrunch in. βHowβdβ?β
βAbigail,β I say, raising a hand. βGo on.β
He tips his chin, letting his gaze fall to the floor. Taking a moment, he blinks rapidly. βThe ones theyβve found so far were being kept in the forensics lab at the police department. Something about weird energy signatures. But the ones we took down, they attacked the forensic scientist who was working on the case.β
My hands fly to my mouth. βOh, my god. Is the scientist okay?β
Wade nods. βYeah, I think so. Sheβs at the hospital, but alive, thankfully.β
βGood,β I say, my shoulders relaxing.
βThe thing that worries me, though, is the fact that they attacked again, and theyβre getting stronger and more vicious. The police had to take drastic measures to take them down.β Wade shudders.
βDrastic measures?β I say, quirking an eyebrow.
βThey blew them up,β Wade says, making a face.
I flinch.
βChelsea said the feds are worried that the longer the revenants are up and moving, the more rabid they get. Like, they begin to operate on a whole new level of instinct. So, naturally, I wanted to warn youβand check on Grandpa. The last thing I wanted was for you to inadvertently get in the way ofβ¦β His voice drifts off and he shudders.
Realization washes through me and I feel horrible for scaring the hell out of him. βOh, god, Wade. I should have answeredββ
βAutumn, thatβs just it, thoughβ¦ My grandpaβs missing.β
Wadeβs final word hits the inside of my skull with a resounding thud.
βAre you certain? What about the boat house?β
He shakes his head. βHeβs gone. The doorβs been ripped clear off its hinges.β
βShit,β I mutter. My insides feel flipped outside and I canβt breathe. I wonder how long heβs been gone? βIf heβs outββ
βHe could be anywhere. And who knows what heβs going to do, or who heβll attack. If the police or the feds find himββ
βTheyβll blow him up,β I say, pacing. βIf what Abigail just told me is real, I might have a way to help him. All of them.β
Wadeβs gaze narrows. βWhat do you mean?β
βAbigail said I need to bring the bodies to the catacombs and lay them to rest. I think theyβll keep coming, even if theyβre blown up. I donβt know how, but I think theyβll find a way to come back together or something. We need to end this,β I say, my mind reeling.
βBut how? If you only went into the catacombs inside your mind, how do we get their bodies into a metaphysical space?β
βI donβt know yet, but Iβll cross that bridge when we get there,β I say, determination building inside my being. If thereβs one thing Iβve learned the past few months, itβs that sometimes going forward takes a leap of faith, hoping the rest of the journey will appear when you need it most. βShe also said I need to gather my alliances. When this happened before, it took my family, the Gilberts, and the Cranes to put an end to it. We need to take down whoever is doing this, and itβs pretty obvious I canβt do it alone.β
βNor should you,β Wade says, his jaw setting. βBut please tell me that doesnβt mean what I think it means?β
βWeβre going to need as much help as we can get, Wade. You know this,β I say, reaching out for his arm.
Wade makes a face, but nods. βDoesnβt mean I have to like it.β
βTrue,β I say softly. βWe also need to find someone else. Abigail was cryptic, but she said that in order to make sure no more revenants rise, we need to consecrate the cemeteries.β
βHow is that cryptic? Seems pretty straightforward.β
βShe said it has to be done by someone who has been βtouched by death, but who doesnβt want to control it.ββ I say, using air quotes. βWhatever the hell that means.β
Wadeβs eyes widen and he recoils like I just told him Iβm about to grow horns.
βWhat is it?β I say, narrowing my gaze and reaching out for him.
He shakes his head, his hands flying to his hair, as he rakes his fingertips though the strands. βThat canβt be. Noβ¦β
βWade?β
Suddenly, his expression brightens. βI know exactly who youβre looking for.β
Chapter 21
Sworn To Secrecy
Wadeβs beautiful face is tormented as he struggles to find the words to tell me what he means. I canβt help but wish I could read his mind in order to know what is making this so difficult for him.
Finally, he
