The agent stops moving us toward the black vehicle. βStep aside, kid.β
Colton shakes his head, getting between me and the vehicle. His eyes are wide and he shakes his head frantically. βNo, youβve gotta listen to me. Itβs not her. You have the wrong person.β
βThatβs ridiculous. All the evidence is pointing directly at her,β the federal agent says.
My heart catches in my throat and I hang my head in defeat.
βI have a hunch you should hear him out, Blake,β Diana says, smirking as she crosses her arms over her torso.
Blake doesnβt even bat an eye. As if thereβs not even a question to her hunches, he turns back to Colton. βIβm listening.β
Colton runs his hand over his mouth, his dark-brown eyes pleading with me, but I donβt know what weβre bargaining for.
βWhatβs going on here?β Cat asks, her face full of concern as she steps up to Colton and reaches for his arm.
Colton swallows hard, glancing from her back to Blake. βIt was me. I was the one who was summoning them. All of them.β
My mouth pops open.
βWhat?β Wade growls behind me. βAll this timeβit was you?β
Colton flicks his gaze to Wade, but ignores the comment. Instead, choosing to focus on the federal agent. βIt started out harmlessβreally. All I wanted to do was get rid ofβ¦β his lips tighten and he stares at the ground. βI thought if I made it look like he was bad news, Autumn would break up with him.β
My anger bursts into flames. βIt was you? The anonymous text? The video that went viral around the school? What in the hell, Colton?β
βI knowβI never meant for you to get involved, Autumn. It was just supposed to be him. If I had knownβ¦β he says, his voice drifting off.
βI canβt believe this,β Wade says, taking a step back and running his hands through his hair. βYou were trying to ruin my lifeβmy reputation and relationship. Make me leave Windhaven. Who the hell do you think you are?β
βYou donβt deserve her,β Colton spits, his face contorting with anguish. βShe deserves betterβshe deservesβ¦β
βYou?β Wade snickers. βCome on, man. You think this is better? Or that this is what she wantsβ¦or what would impress her?β Wade moves toward Colton with clenched fists. βYou clearly have no idea who Autumn really is.β
βEhβthatβs close enough, lover boy,β Diana says, holding her hands out and stopping Wadeβs forward momentum. Her chin tips downward, making her pink hair ruffle in the cool breeze.
βBut you heard himββ Wade says, through clenched teeth.
βI did. And so did everyone else here,β Diana says, pointedly.
Colton throws daggers at Wade with his eyes. βWhatever, man. You shouldnβt even be here. Dominicβs told me about you. Your kind shouldnβt even be anywhere near her.β
Domβs eyes pop open and he raises his hands. βHey now, donβt bring me into this.β
Wade takes a step back, rolling his eyes. βAgain with the my kind bullshit.β
βBut itβs true,β Colton says, frowning as he faces Dominic. βYou said heβs forbiddenβthat he shouldnβt be anywhere near her, and if he was outta the picture, Iβd have a chance with Autumn.β
βYeah, but I didnβt mean this way,β Dominic says, shaking his head.
Colton eyes are glassed over and his words come out choked. βBut what about the kiss?β
Wadeβs head whips toward me. βKiss?β The level of heartbreak evident in his eyes makes my soul ache.
DammitβI should have told him sooner.
I shake my head. βIt wasnβtβitβs not like that.β
Coltonβs eyes narrow. βItβs exactly like that. We kissed, Autumn. You canβt erase that, even if you think you want to.β
βYou kissed me, Colton,β I fire back. βI didnβt ask for itβand I certainly didnβt expect it.β
βButβ¦β Colton says, his eyebrows tipping up in the middle.
βWaitβwhat?β Cat says, gawking. βWhen did this happen? How did I not know about it?β
βLooks like Autumnβs been keeping it from everyone,β Wade mutters, taking a step back.
Holding Wadeβs gaze, I try to will to him my thoughts and feelings, but itβs no use. I can see him slipping away from me right before my eyes.
I look over to Cat, trying to ignore the thrumming of my heartbeat against my chest. βIt was nothing. Iβd written it off as a momentary lapse of reason. Itβs why I didnβt tell you, Wade. It was nothing.β
Wadeβs face is drained of all color and he looks as though he might be sick.
βWhen? Where was I?β Cat demands.
βIt was after your accident. We had just gotten you back,β I say, exhaling all of my pent-up energy. I want to reach for Wade, to comfort him, but I canβt do anything with my damn hands behind my back. βI thought he was just relievedβand it was an accident. I didnβt think he really meant anything by it.β
βSo, while my grandpa died, and his sister nearly did, he was making the moves on you?β Wade says, shaking his head and turning toward the house. βUnreal.β
βIt didnβt mean anything,β I repeat warily.
Coltonβs expression is a mangled mess of agony. βBut I thoughtβ¦β he mumbles.
βSo, if Iβm getting this right, Colton, youβre confessing to the summoning of the revenants?β Blake says, reaching for his handcuff keys.
Coltonβs dark eyes dart to Blake, defeated. βYes.β
βIs this at both the Windhaven and Mistwood Point cemeteries?β Blake continues.
βYes.β
βAll right.β Blake unlocks the cuffs, releasing my hands and walking over to Colton. βMr. Gilbert, youβre under arrest for criminal resurrection. Youβll need to come with us.β
Colton nods his head, turning around and bringing his arms behind his back so Blake can put the cuffs on him.
βButβthis doesnβt make any sense,β I say, shaking my head. βColton, youβre an elemental witch. You can bend earth to your will. How could you summon people? I thoughtβ?β
βAs luck would have it, elemental witches who get their power from earth energies can resurrect bodies,β Diana says, eyeing her nails like theyβre the most interesting thing about this afternoon. βBut Gemini Twinsβsee, their power grows exponentially when they feel threatened.β She turns her discerning gaze to Cat and quirks an eyebrow.
