I blink back at him, unsure what to even say to something like that.
He swallows hard, taking a step away from me. βYou were right. The day we buried my grandpa, I knew who I was talking to; it wasnβt just the groundkeeper.β
I stare at him, waiting for him to continue.
βI wish I could have told you then. I wish I could tell you more now, but you have to understand, weβre sworn to secrecy. There are laws and ifββ he swallows hard, taking a step away from me.
βWhat is it?β I ask. βJust say it.β
He exhales, dropping his gaze to the ground. The lines on his forehead crease as he whispers, βHeβs my dad.β
I cross my arms as an unsettling feeling washes over me. βSo, your dadβs not really dead?β
Wade winces, tipping his head to the side. βItβs complicated.β
βWade, weβre down to the wire here. Nowβs not the time for half-truths,β I say with a little more venom than originally anticipated.
βIβm sorry, I know that. Look, thereβs a lot to all of this and I promise, we can get into all of it laterβ¦but for now we need to focus on the task at hand. Long story short, I think my dad is the one Abigail was referring to.β
Shaking my head, I say, βWhat makes you think that?β
βRemember what we found in the Academyβs library? It said my dad was the main suspect, right? And there were symbols on the ground,β he says, his silver eyes pleading with me.
βI remember,β I say, nodding.
βI donβt think he was the one they were looking for. I think he was the one consecrating the cemetery,β he says.
βOkay?β
Wade clears his throat. βI canβt tell you why I know this yet. Youβll have to trust me, Dru. I would never do anything to put you in jeopardy. As soon as I can tell you, I will.β
Inhaling deeply, I tip my head in acknowledgement. βIβll hold you to it.β
He nods. βCome on. First, we need to find my grandpa. My dadβs not going to want to help us, so itβll give us some leverage.β
I bite back more of my questions as I pull my phone from my pocket. Dialing up Cat, I take a few steps away from him, waiting for her to pick up the line.
After a few rings, she finally answers. βHey, Autumn. I was just thinking aboutββ
βCat, I need your help,β I say, cutting her off.
βWhat is it? What do you need?β she asks, her voice suddenly serious.
βCan you and Colton get Dominic and meet me at my house? Itβs important. Iβll explain everything when youβre here,β I say, clutching the phone tightly to my ear.
Without missing a beat, she says, βOn it. Weβll be there in ten.β
She hangs up before I can even say thank you.
Turning to Wade, I extend my arm and hold a hand out to him. βCome on. Letβs see if we can find your grandpa.β
He takes my hand and we make our way up the stairs. When we reach the doorway to my bedroom, twilight is descending and darkness isnβt far off. A rush of adrenaline courses through my veins, and I canβt help but worry about what happens when darkness falls.
Will we be able to make this all happen? How will we find the one whoβs been raising the dead?
Thereβs so much that needs to happen and I donβt even know if weβll be able to make it all work.
By the time we reach the front door, Dominicβs car is already racing down the driveway. The loud, distinctive sports car exhaust on his Civic is hard to miss.
As I open the front door, Dominic pulls into the drivewayβs loop, with Cat and Colton following immediately behind in their Ford Escape.
Dominic is the first one to hop out of his vehicle. βWhatβs up, Blackwood? Cat sounded pretty urgent. Everything okay?β His gaze darts to Wade, then back to me.
βLetβs wait for Cat and Colton,β I say, tipping my chin toward their vehicle.
Colton gets out first, his dark eyes sweeping between me and Wade before his lips tug downward. Cat hops out next, practically dashing around the front of the vehicle to stand before us.
βWeβre here. What do you need?β Cat says, her ebony features hardening.
βLook guys, we need help finding Wadeβs grandpaβ¦β I say, looking over my shoulder at Wade.
His shoulders are pulled back and his expression is as hard as the stone angel in the center of the drivewayβs circle.
βWadeβs grandpa?β Cat says, glancing around at the other two. βI thought he was dead. Didnβt you guys bury him?β
I nod. βItβs a long story, but heβs been brought back to life. Donβt ask me how, I donβt know the specifics just yet. But Iβm working on it.β
βHoly shit,β she says, raising her hands to her mouth.
βHeβs been turned into a revenantβa zombie. We need to find him so we can put him to rest,β I say, sweeping my gaze across the three of them.
Cat nods eagerly, Dominic shifts to one foot, looking a bit put out, but Colton turns away, shaking his head. This is the team. Wonderful.
Colton mumbles something under his breath and it sounds like, βNot gonna help him.β
I roll my eyes. βLook, guys. Thereβs more at stake here than just Wadeβs grandpa. There are others, too, and they need to be laid to rest. If they donβt, people are going to die,β I say, trying to accentuate the last word for effect. βThe revenants are getting more hostile.β
βThatβs horrible,β Cat says, her eyes wide and jaw slacking open. βYouβre notβI mean, it wasnβt you who brought these people back, was it?β
I shoot her a disgruntled look. βOf course not. Someone is trying to frame me for their resurrections. But it doesnβt make them any less my responsibility. Our responsibility. We know about it and Iβve been given information on how
