โIs she dead?โ said Shella.
โWe donโt know. The last we saw of her, she was hit by two steel ballista bolts.โ
Karalyn opened her eyes.
โWell?โ said Corthie. โCan we rescue her?โ
Karalyn shook her head. โLostwell is no more. I cannot see it or reach it; all thatโs in its place is a void. Belindaโs gone.โ She lowered her gaze. โIโm sorry.โ
They stood in silence for a moment, then Corthie sat and put his head in his hands. Aila stood by his shoulder, a hand on the back of his neck.
โI do have some good news,โ Karalyn said. โI can use the Sextant; it responds to me the same way that Quadrants used to. I saw the other worlds it has created, and I saw Kelsey and Sable; one in the City, and the other on Dragon Eyre. Theyโre both in one piece. I can also see the potential this device brings us. We could use it to travel between the worlds, if we wished, or, we could even create a new world. I need time, a lot of time, to study it. Shella, I intend to keep it here.โ
โEh, it seems a bit dangerous.โ
Karalyn withdrew the Weathervane. โItโs useless without this. Weโll keep them separate unless Iโm using it.โ
The door to the chamber opened and two young children ran in, a boy and a girl. Karalyn laid the sword down on top of the Sextant and crouched next to them.
โKyra, Cael; this is Corthie, your uncle.โ
The boy frowned at him, while the girl looked shy.
โHello,โ said Corthie. He wiped his eyes, stood, then got down to one knee. โIโve been away, but Iโm back now. What have you been doing?โ
โPlaying in the gardens,โ said the boy. โDo you want to play?โ
โAye,โ he said. โThat sounds like fun.โ
โLater,โ said their mother; โweโre going to visit grandma today, as a surprise.โ
The girlโs face flushed. โWillโฆ will Aunty Thorn be there?โ
โI expect so, Kyra.โ
The faces of both children lit up. Karalyn smiled, but Corthie could see the pain that their response had caused her.
โIโm staying here,โ said Shella. โAs much as Iโd love to see old Dafferโs face when she realises her boy is back, I think Iโll leave this one to the Holdfasts.โ
Karalyn picked up the Weathervane. โStand by me, children,โ she said.
โWhere are we going?โ said Aila.
โThe Hold Fast estate,โ said Karalyn.
The air wavered round them and they appeared on a wooden porch. It was freshly-painted in white, with chairs and tables laid out under the sloping roof. To one side stretched the flat grasslands of the Holdings, illuminated by the morning sunshine, and Corthie gasped. Home. He stared at the view for a moment, then turned towards the rear of the large mansion. White arches and colonnades were stacked up, and the grand building stretched out before them. Close by were other structures โ stables, barns, and down a little slope was a row of cottages for the estate workers.
โYou lived here?โ said Aila. โIt wouldnโt look out of place on Princeps Row in Tara.โ
Corthie said nothing, his eyes taking everything in.
โGive me a moment,โ said Karalyn. โTake a seat.โ
Aila and Corthie sat down on a couch facing the view of the plains, and a few moments later, a young woman walked out onto the porch.
โYou called?โ she said. โOh, youโve brought the twins.โ
The young woman crouched down, and the two children ran into her arms.
She laughed. โYes, itโs lovely to see you too.โ She glanced up at Karalyn. โAs much as I adore seeing them, I wish you had called ahead to let me know. Itโs only been four days since your last visit, and you said you would leave at least ten days before bringing them back here. Iโฆโ
โSorry, Thorn. Youโre right; I should have let you know, but, well, guess whoโs back?โ She glanced over to the couch.
Thorn turned, and her eyes widened. โIs thatโฆ? Corthie?โ
He stood, and her eyes glanced up at his height.
โHeโs just arrived back,โ said Karalyn.
โAnd Kelsey? Sable?โ
Karalyn shook her head. โTheyโre both fine, but they went their own way.โ
Thorn stood, holding a childโs hand in each of hers.
โThis is Thorn,โ said Corthie, โmy sister-in-law.โ
โHello,โ said Aila, getting up.
Thorn glanced at Aila for a second, then her eyes went back to Corthie.
โSheโs a soulwitch,โ said Karalyn.
โWhatโs that?โ said Aila.
โIt means she has the same powers as Amalia,โ said Corthie, โexcept, of course, sheโs mortal like the rest of us. Itโs good to see you, Thorn.โ
โAnd you. Youโveโฆ grown.โ
โWould you mind looking after the twins for a little while?โ said Karalyn. โI want to take him to see mother.โ
โOf course. Will you be staying?โ
โI might head back to Colsbury later, but Corthie and Aila will be staying; mother will insist.โ
โThen there will probably be a party tonight. Keirโs here.โ
โAnd how is my brother?โ said Corthie.
โDoing well,โ said Thorn. โCelineโs been showing him how to run the estate, so that he can take it over one day.โ
Karalyn gestured to Corthie and Aila. โWeโll see you soon, Thorn.โ She crouched down by the twins. โAunty Thorn will look after you this morning; alright?โ
Cael smiled, while the little girl had already buried her face in the folds of Thornโs dress.
Karalyn led Aila and Corthie into the mansion through the rear door.
โShe was looking after your children,โ said Aila, โwhile you wereโฆ away?โ
โAye,โ said Karalyn, her eyes reflecting the pain she felt, โbut what I thought was going to be a few thirds turned out to be four years. Sometimes, I wish I could cut off all contact with her, but the twins love her, and it wouldnโt be fair on them. It hasnโt been easy, but weโre getting there, slowly.โ
โThe twins are beautiful,โ said Corthie.
Karalyn nodded.
โWhat powers does your mother have?โ said Aila, as they walked along the marble floor of the hallway.
โVision,โ said Corthie; โthe whole range.โ
โWill she be able to read my thoughts?โ
Karalyn eyed her, and they came to a halt in the passageway. โGood point; we canโt be having
