โYou sealed my mind?โ
โJust to vision mages; itโs impossible to seal your mind from me, Iโm afraid.โ
โYou mean that no visionโฆ mage, or god, will be able to see my thoughts again?โ
โThatโs right.โ
โMalikโs ass, I could have done with that in the City.โ
โTry not to curse in front of my mother if you can help it. Are you ready? Iโve got an idea. Weโll walk into her office, but Iโll hide you from her. She wonโt be able to see you until I say so.โ
โIs that wise?โ said Aila.
Karalyn shrugged, and they approached a set of tall, double doors, which Karalyn pushed open. They walked into a large, high-ceilinged office. The white walls were adorned with a large collection of maps covering almost every part of the Star Continent. At one end of the room, next to a large bay window, was a desk, behind which a woman was sitting, working her way through a large pile of paperwork.
โGood morning, dear,โ the woman said, without looking up.
โGood morning, mother. Busy?โ
โRather. I have a meeting with the Empress via vision in five minutes. Urgent, apparently, so youโll have to be quick.โ She glanced up, frowning. โDid you bring the twins?โ
โAye.โ
The woman sighed. โAfter what we discussed? The more Thorn sees of them, the harder it will be, not just for her, but for you and the children too. Itโs not fair. You saidโฆโ
โI know what I said, mother, but I have a surprise for you.โ
The woman lit a cigarette. โYes?โ
โYou might have to prepare a guest room.โ
The Holdfast matriarch frowned. โYouโve brought a visitor? Have you found yourself a boyfriend at last?โ
โNo, mother, and I wouldnโt hold your breath on that front, if I were you. I know itโs been four and a half years since Lennox died but, to me, itโs only been a few thirds.โ She cleared her thoughts and smiled. โAnyway, say hello to your son.โ
Daphne Holdfast narrowed her eyes for a moment, then stared as Corthie and Aila appeared before her. She screamed and fell off her chair, sending paperwork flying as she landed on the hard floor. Corthie laughed and strode forwards, leaning over to help her up. She stood, staring at him, then her face dissolved in tears and she threw her arms round him, sobbing into his chest.
โHello, mother,โ he said. โIโm sorry I took so long.โ
โFive years!โ Daphne cried. โLet me look at you. Youโre taller than your father was, and almost as broad-shouldered, and just as handsome.โ She glared at Karalyn. โAre you trying to give me a heart attack?โ she sobbed.
โSorry; I couldnโt resist.โ
โWell, never mind that now. Sit down, Corthie. Corthieโฆโ She fell into tears again, sat, and wept.
Corthie put a hand on her shoulder. โListen, mother. Kelsey has decided not to come back.โ
Daphne glanced up at him. โWhat?โ
โSheโs safe, and well. Sheโs gone to the City where I lived for a while, with friends. Sheโs a dragon rider.โ
โA what-rider?โ
โDragon,โ said Karalyn. โTheyโre like winged gaien, only they can talk.โ
โA talking gaien?โ
โWe can discuss that later,โ said Corthie. โSableโs also not coming back.โ
โIs she a dragon-rider too, is she?โ
โAye, she is.โ
Daphne sighed. โEvery time someone returns from Lostwell, they leave someone else behind. My little Kelsey.โ
Karalyn placed the Weathervane on the desk. Daphne wiped her face and raised an eyebrow.
โKeep a hold of this for me, mother,โ said Karalyn. โItโs the key to the Sextant; a huge device that can send people between worlds. Corthie brought it back with him. I have a feeling that you might be able to operate it, so, when we have time, Iโll show you, and youโll be able to see Kelsey.โ
โAnd why do I have to keep the sword?โ
โThe Sextant doesnโt work without it, and itโs an extremely dangerous device. If you keep it here, I can come and take it whenever I need to, but otherwise itโll remain inactive.โ
Daphne nodded. โTell me all about it later.โ Her eyes flickered towards Aila. โAnd you are?โ
โThis is Aila,โ said Corthie.
โI see.โ Daphne composed herself and frowned at the demigod. โThis is the woman you stayed for? This is the woman who prevented you from coming home thirds ago?โ
โDonโt blame her,โ said Karalyn; โit was my fault.โ
โI am perfectly capable of assigning blame on my own, thank you very much.โ She stood and walked to the front of the desk. She was the same height as Aila, and she stared into her eyes. She frowned.
โI blocked her,โ said Karalyn. โI didnโt want you having an unfair advantage over her.โ
โI can see that,โ said Daphne. โYou did the same with Thorn; you seem determined to undermine me.โ
โIt seems fair to me,โ said Corthie.
โYou would think that,โ said Daphne. โWell, what are your intentions? I assume it must be serious. Are you married, or are you planning on getting married?โ
โWellโฆโ began Corthie.
โHush, son; I was asking her.โ
โI donโt know,โ said Aila. โWe talked about marriage once, but things have been a little hectic recently.โ
โI can marry you,โ said Daphne. โAs Herald of the Empire, I have the authority to do so. That reminds me; Iโm supposed to be sending my vision to Plateau City to talk to the Empress. Oh well, sheโll have to wait. Family is family. Right, so, Aila; youโre a god, I believe?โ
โA demigod. My mother was mortal.โ
โAnd how long have you been alive?โ
โAlmost eight centuries.โ
Daphne puffed out her cheeks. โThatโs longer than the recorded history of the Holdings. Eight centuries? By the Creator, youโre positively ancient. How long can you be expected to live?โ
Aila frowned. โIโฆ Iโm not sure, exactly. The oldest gods have been around for over thirty thousand years.โ
โAnd why are you interested in a mortal?โ
โI love Corthie.โ
โYes, but you must have been in love before now, surely? Do you have any children? Do you plan on having any? Will you remain young-looking, while we all age around you? What will happen when
