That had been Adonis’s idea. Each department focused on their section before giving it to the next in order to go back and start again. Only Fabiana truly knew the entire process. She’d exclusively work to bind the nanos to the suits and program their markers for particular scents.
Her chemist was working on the compounds of different scents for each suit, which Fabiana would then link. Each man, only known to her and Adonis, would have a signature they would be able to pick up if they knew what they were looking for. Evergreen. Snow. Water. For a wolf, those all had connections in the brain, but most wouldn’t register it to be out of the ordinary in areas large enough to have them.
Fabiana’s suit was the only one linked to the property like air, a complete blind to the nose. It was a safety measure, a way to protect her invention, and Adonis had accepted without issue.
“Where’s home?” she pressed.
The scientist turned around. She thought his name was Brad. Or maybe Greg. None of them seemed to be forward with personal information if they weren’t from within the pack.
“Not here.”
Fabiana smiled. “Good.”
He could obviously keep a secret. Raphael had done very well, even if she personally tested them herself. If any of them broke or were found where they weren’t supposed to be, she’d make sure they were gone.
She left him to his work and headed for her computer layout in the server room. She needed to work a bit on encoding and prep. It felt good knowing she was working to save others and provide them with a leg up in the upcoming war.
The thought that Skuld wanted to destroy Encantado and the world was scary. Movies and books talked about heroes against forces greater than them, but the citizens of Encantado were real. They had families and dreams, jobs and days they wanted to give up only to force themselves to keep going.
No one knew when Skuld would return, but they had no doubt she’d come back stronger than before. The suits wouldn’t make them impervious to the attacks but would give them a better fighting chance against the Hollows. They were viciously dangerous and could decimate their numbers.
Nanshe and the red wolf—the mysterious warrior no one could find—had killed the fearsome dragon, but that didn’t mean Skuld couldn’t bring over another one, or something worse. All possible preparations had to be completed as quickly as possible.
Fabiana intended to live in the lab as much as her mate would allow. The moment she got the first eighteen fitted and tested, they would be able to replicate and move the next batch much faster. The materials were expensive, but she hoped to get to the other packs soon. She intended to ensure the safety of the Alphas, betas, and their mates before she tackled more wolves.
She needed to work with Kalinda for the mages and Silva for the Fae. Fabiana had to understand their powers in order to hide them. It wouldn’t be as easy as scent. For the Fae, perhaps Heath was the better option. He’d been able to hide in plain sight and consciously block what and how strong he was, all with his control of Shadow.
If Fabiana could replicate that, the Fae would be much easier to shield.
Maybe she needed to hone in on them after the Alphas.
Not that she wanted to leave anyone out, but she’d have to focus on the groups at the top of the control structure and their strongest fighters. It was war, and they needed to give themselves the best chance at survival.
Fabiana was starting to believe this was where she was meant to be.
As Adonis’s mate, she could do things she’d never dreamed possible, and for all her fear of him and falling in love, this contribution could be quantified and measured. She could see the visible results of her actions in lives saved.
We’re going to win this time, Skuld. Just you watch.
Chapter Twelve
“The shipments from Guatemala are on schedule. We’ll have to pay extra at the border with the security enacted since Skuld came in.”
Adonis figured that would be the case. “Doesn’t surprise me. As long as the load isn’t shortage, we can work through our man in customs. Has our contact at the Federal Bureau of Magical Containment given us more on what they’ve uncovered on Skuld?”
Raphael shook his head. “Nothing. They’re still scratching their heads and trying to figure out how to cover their assholes since they didn’t respond with proper funds for Encantado in the wake of the initial attacks.”
Adonis scoffed. “They never fucking do. Moonstone money has been the lifeblood of every emergency reconstruction needed in this city. I expect the FBMC understands I plan to collect in full one day.”
“They’ll be scrounging to repay even half, but they understand other services can be used as barter.”
Good.
Adonis always kept account of his debts, and he’d have no problem sticking it to the Bureau. They’d fucked up enough lives by stripping children from their families because of a hint of mage blood in them. Adonis couldn’t save them all, but he ensured those who wanted their children back could be reunited and relocated to a portal city of their choice.
He’d only dented the surface, but it was better than the sad commercials asking for support for poor little magi in boarding schools until they were old enough to take care of themselves. The FBMC were smart enough not to air the pleas within portal cities, leaving many to believe they only removed kids when they were in their later teens, but Adonis knew the bastards did it to children as young as one.
All to find the artifact.
“Darvin is still searching for the artifact as we speak.
