Beside me, Theo snorts. I restrain myself from elbowing him.
βAnd she contacted you as a result of those comments?β I ask.
βYes.β She takes another long drink of wine, killing her second glass.
I refill it.
βDid she offer to buy the pictures right away?β I ask.
βNo, we exchanged some messages first. She asked how Iβd met Rick and I explained about the party.β
βYou told her what you remembered?β
Dovie nods. That explains why EvonneBringsTheTruth posted the bullshit about Rick dragging Laurel into the bedroom with a belt around her neck. She got it from Dovie.
βDo you still have those messages?β
She swills more wine before she nods. Thereβs not much left in the bottle, which is probably fortunate. Theoβs not going to think much of my investigative technique if I get the witness soused during the interview.
I write down my email address on a clean page, rip it out of my notebook, and put it on the table between us. βWould you forward them to me, please?β
Dovie glances at the piece of paper like itβs venomous.
Theo reaches out, snags the piece of paper, takes a pen out of his pocket, and writes his official email address below mine. βIβd like them, too.β
He doesnβt say please. Dovie blanches.
βYes, okay.β
βHow did the buy work? Did she meet you?β
Dovie shakes her head. βPayPal. She paid the money into my account and I put the pictures in a Dropbox folder that I shared with her.β
βBy email?β Iβm out of my depth here, technically. But Iβm not sure it matters. The mechanism by which EvonneBringsTheTruth got the pictures doesnβt matter as much as who she is.
βYes.β
βYou never met her?β
βFace-to-face? No, of course not.β
What ever happened to good old face-to-face meetings that produce a description of the suspect? Damn this digital age.
βWhat was her name, the woman who bought the pictures?β
Dovie takes the last drink out of her wine glass and works the liquid in her mouth before she swallows and says, βHer screen-name was Delta Hyhhyd. Obviously, thatβs not her real name.β
Itβs not at all obvious to me.
βWhyβs it obviously not her real name?β Theo asks.
Glad itβs not obvious to him, either.
βUm, itβs an acronym of Julia de Burgosβs saying, βdonβt let the hand you hold, hold you downβ?β
Clever. I bet Emily would have known that.
βPayPal accounts are hard to set up in a pseudonym,β Theo says. βBank details canβt be verified. What was the name on the account?β
Dovie chews her lower lip. βIβd need to look it up.β
Theo nods at her handbag, which sheβs dropped next to her chair. βYou got your phone in there? Take your time.β
Brilliant. That alone makes bringing Theo along worthwhile.
Scowling, Dovie retrieves the latest model iPhone from her bag and starts working at it. She scrolls for a while, then finally holds her phone out to us. βThere. Evonne Wilson.β
Bingo.
βScreenshot that and email it to me,β Theo says. Again, thereβs no βplease.β There is, however, the full authority of the NYPD behind his command.
βOkay.β Dovie messes a bit more with her phone before she shoves it back in her handbag.
βThanks,β Theo says. βDid you have any contact with Evonne Wilson after you sent her the pictures?β
Dovie shakes her head.
βHow much did she pay you for them?β Theo asks.
Damn, he doesnβt shy away from the hard questions. I was going to save that one for last.
βThree thousand,β Dovie mutters.
Theo taps his index fingers against his chin. βLotta money for some sexy snaps.β
Dovie picks up her empty wine glass, pours the dregs of the bottle into it and knocks it back. βShe offered. I didnβt ask for any specific amount.β
βThen I wonβt look to charge you for solicitation,β Theo says. His voice is pure cop and Dovie shudders. I canβt blame her.
βAre you going to arrest me?β
βNot right now, but Iβm not ruling it out. I know you didnβt get Mr. Errolβs consent to sell the pictures. Did you get Laurelβs?β
Dovieβs shoulders round and she folds in on herself, holding the empty wine glass between her breasts. βNo.β
Theo nods heavily and sits back in his chair. I take that as my signal to wrap up the interview.
βWere you aware of the pictures being used in an online attack against Rick Errol?β I ask.
Dovie nods. βI saw his Twitter.β
βDid you post anything? Participate in the Twitter?β
βThe Twitter?β Dovie arches an eyebrow but at twin glowers from me and Theo, she shrugs. βYes, I posted a few times. My user-nameβs ThreeQueensMoreFun. I didnβt use any of the pictures. You can check.β
βI will,β Theo says. βI want you to email me all of your email and social media accounts. And I will check.β
Dovie looks appropriately cowed.
βAnything else you want to tell us?β I ask.
She shakes her head.
βOkay, thanks for your timeββ
βHeβs not the victim, you know,β Dovie says, her mouth twisting bitterly. βYouβre investigating on his behalf.β She tips her chin at me. βYouβre acting like Iβm some kind of criminal.β Theo gets a derisive chin-tip. βBut you werenβt in that room and you didnβt see what I saw. How he acted. Heβs not a victim.β
βRick deserves everything thatβs happened to him,β I say, making it a statement rather than a question.
βYes, he does.β
Sadly, if I hadnβt seen the Little Box of Horrors, Iβd probably agree with her.

Theoβs a recapper. He goes over every detail of the interview as we drive back into the City. Itβs interesting to hear his perspective, but he didnβt get anything out of its that I didnβt get.
βEvonne Wilsonβs not all that common a name. The surname is, sure, but the combination? We should be able to find her.β
βAssuming thatβs her real name,β I say.
βYeah. But it really isnβt that easy to set up a fake PayPal account. PayPal links to either a credit card or a bank account and you canβt transfer money in or out unless you
