I shake myself out of the past. βNo. And heβs probably as suspicious as you are about my motives. Honestly, I just feel protective towards Laurel. Emilyβs brought out all these Daddy-Dom instincts in me and now I canβt turn them off.β
Theo chuckles. βYouβre fucked.β
βProbably,β I agree.
βWhatβs the deal with Friday night? You bringing them to Blunts?β
This could get sticky.
βRickβs having a play party. I invited them up for it.β
βRickβs having a party in the middle of his fucking stalking?β Theo asks incredulously.
βTo be fair, the party was planned before everything kicked off. Iβm pulling in a ton of security.β
βFucking witness protection wonβt keep the guy safe in the middle of a party. Tell me you arenβt letting it go forward to draw out his stalker?β
It crossed my mind, but Iβm not admitting that to Theo-the-cop.
βMy partner is Rickβs body man for the party. Iβd be okay with the party even if it was just Manny on Rick for the night, but Iβll be there and Iβve got another guy on it as well. Itβs a play party so itβs not open to just anyone.β
βItβs a play party so there will be plenty of shit lying around that can be used as a weapon.β
True.
βYou try convincing the guy not to live his life.β
βNope, thatβs your job. If you arenβt going to do it, then your job is to get me an invite.β
βNo problem. Itβll be a plus one.β
βIβll bring DirtyGurl since weβre supposed to be doing a scene. She can keep Emily company while you and I keep an eye on things.β
βWorks for me.β
He gives me the side-eye.
βIf youβre going to keep taking your bloody eyes off the road, at least let me drive,β I say mildly.
βDidnβt even know you could.β
βI can drive. I just donβt see much point in keeping a car in the City. Besides, public transportβs better for the environment.β
He snorts, just as eloquently as Maude. βRight, Mother Bear.β He turns up Second Avenue and straight into a line of traffic. βNowβs the part where you tell me why youβre being so accommodating when most PIs have a shit-fit when I step all over their toes. After thatβs the part where you tell me what youβve been dodging around with Laurel Radford.β
βYou know I was in the Navy, right?β
βYeah, I think Iβve heard that.β
βIt gave me a healthy respect for what βpolice powersβ actually mean,β I tell him. βIβm not interested in spending time in a cell, away from Emily, just because you think Iβm getting in your way. Besides, Iβm really worried about Rick. I know you donβt like the guy, but heβs my client. Last client of mine who didnβt take their stalker seriously ended up with second-degree burns all over her face and arms. I donβt want that to happen to Rick. Iβll take all the help I can get.β
Theo rubs his hand over his face. βI donβt like the guy, but I donβt want him hurt. Thatβs not why I do this job.β
βOkay,β I say neutrally, because Iβve come across more than one cop who was more interested in the power the badge gave them than protecting and serving, and Theo was awfully fast to throw his badge at me when he thought I was going to be more of a hindrance than a help. But Theo-the-Dom is a good man, so Iβll give Theo-the-cop the benefit of the doubt.
βLetβs get to the other part. What arenβt you telling me about Laurel Radford?β
βShe blacked out in New York and woke up in an abandoned house in Baltimore a couple of days later, covered in blood and lucky to be alive.β
βWhat the fuck?β Theo snarls.
βHer Dom told me she doesnβt know if she was drugged or she did it to herself mixing booze and painkillers, but she does know she was raped and beaten. By several different men, over a couple of days. They left her for dead when they were done.β
βAnd she reported it and they were caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,β Theo growls.
βYou know thatβs not what happened. She hit bottom and it scared her to death. She got clean and sober. She met Jiro and he helped her figure out what was driving the self-destructive behavior. Sheβs much, much better. Theyβre getting married. Sheβs a pet, wholly owned. Thatβs why I needed his permission for everything.β
Theo blows out a long breath. βWas she high at the party?β
βYou need to ask her that, but thereβs no question they were all drinking.β
βRick did an impact and breath-play scene with her with no negotiation and no safe word when sheβd been drinking,β Theo says flatly. βAnd you want me to believe there was consent?β
βI want you to listen to Laurel before you make up your mind.β
I also want him to remember that thereβs a difference between being a bad Dom and being a rapist, but I appreciate that the line can be fine. Laurelβs unequivocal about which side of the line the Fire Island party was on, but without talking to her, I wouldnβt be sure. All I can ask is for Theo to listen to her the way I did before he decides to go after Rickβs ass.
Theoβs silent the rest of the way up Second Avenue. When we reach Blunts, he pulls into the underground parking lot, but instead of heading to his numbered space, he pulls up in front of the entrance to the lifts.
βThis is you,β he tells me.
Since Iβm more than ready to end my time with Theo-the-cop, I take the hint and open the door.
βI want everything you have by noon tomorrow,β he says as Iβm climbing out of the car, a little awkwardly, because my left leg still doesnβt have much spring. βThatβs me not being an asshole because I understand you might need to take care of Emily in the morning.β
Still pretty damn quick to throw his badge at me.
βIβll have everything to
