βShe could have gotten a credit card in the fake name.β
βMmm, not that easy for the average civvy. She canβt just borrow an older friendβs driverβs license like an underage kid trying to buy booze. Getting fake ID that stands up to bank checks? Itβs expensive. And slow. Itβd take a lot of planning. If sheβd paid in Bitcoin or something, Iβd say the nameβs a dead end, but PayPal? Iβm betting thatβs her real name.β
I nod, and make a mental note to get Max on the name, but thatβs not a thought I share with Theo, because I donβt want to bring my favorite hacker to the attention of the police.
As weβre crossing the Queensboro Bridge, my phone goes. After checking the caller, I put it on speaker and set it between me and Theo.
βJiro,β I say. βIβm here with Theo DβAndrea. Heβs a detective with the NYPD. Heβs investigating Rick Errolβs stalking. Heβs hoping to have a chance to speak with Laurel while youβre here over the weekend.β
Jiroβs silent for a long moment. βFor what reason?β he asks finally.
βI want to ensure that Laurel consented to what happened at the Fire Island party,β Theo answers.
βWhy are the police involved?β Jiro asks.
βThere are allegations online,β Theo responds.
βAnd the NYPD investigates every internet rumor?β Jiro scoffs. βI find that difficult to believe, Detective.β
βNo, we donβt,β Theo says. βBut Iβm taking this seriously. If Laurel didnβt consent to what happened at that party, Iβm looking to charge Rick Errol with aggravated assault and rape.β
Jiroβs silent again. βLogan, would you take me off speaker, please? Iβd like to ask a personal question.β
βSure.β I pick up the phone and tap off the speaker. βGo ahead.β
βDo you trust Detective DβAndrea?β Jiro asks.
βI do. I canβt tell you why without his agreement, but, yes, I do.β
βI see.β Jiroβs silent again and I can feel him thinking. βDoes he understand our lifestyle?β
βYes, he does.β
βI see,β he repeats. I hope he does, because if his next question is whether Theo practices our lifestyle, I donβt know how Iβm going to answer. βVery well. You can put me back on speaker.β
βThanks.β I tap the phone again and set it on the seat.
βDetective, I will permit Laurel to speak with you. I can assure you that she consented, but I understand that you would prefer to hear it from her.β
βI would,β Theo confirms. βBut thank you for that. Loganβs also been squirmy about telling me what happened after the party that ended Laurelβs threesomes with Damon Tiger and Dovie Donegan. Would you care to shed some light on that?β
βLaurel experienced an epiphany about the risks of the way she was living. She decided to change her behavior. Ending her liaison with Mr. Tiger and Ms. Donegan was a part of that change,β Jiro says smoothly.
Theoβs too experienced a detective to buy what Jiroβs selling.
βWhat led to the epiphany?β Theo asks, glancing away from the evening traffic to narrow his eyes at the phone.
βEyes on the road,β I grumble.
βSorry,β he grunts.
βI donβt wish to distract you when youβre driving, Detective,β Jiro says. βI would be happy to discuss this when we meet. However, I will request that you not press Laurel for details of what happened. It is unrelated to the events of the party or Mr. Errolβs actions, and it is a subject of some distress for Laurel.β
βJiro, would you be okay with me explaining to Theo?β I ask. βIβll keep it to the broadest terms. I think once Theo knows what happened, he wonβt need details.β
Jiro sighs audibly. βYes, that might be best. Recounting the details is still traumatic for Laurel.β
βWe donβt want to trigger her,β I assure him. βTheo understands what that is.β
βVery well. You have my permission. While I have you, Logan, weβre flying up early. Laurel wants to do some sightseeing.β
βWhen are you coming in?β I ask.
βTomorrow afternoon. I donβt expect you to play host. Weβll take a hotel room for Thursday night and meet you Friday as planned.β
βHey, itβs not an imposition. Itβll give us a chance to have a low-key night on Thursday before the party. Emily and I will show you around the City, as long as you donβt mind a visit to the Natural History Museum. Emily canβt show anyone around New York without introducing them to the T-Rexes.β
Jiro chuckles. βLaurel would like that.β
βText me your flight details and Iβll arrange for someone to pick you up. Are you coming in to JFK or LaGuardia?β
βJFK. Flight lands at twelve-fifteen.β
βGreat. Plenty of time for Central Park and the Museum. Is Laurel a shopper?β
βOh, yes, and I promised to take her to Saks.β
βNo problem. Fifth Avenueβs just across the park.β Then it occurs to me that Emily may not be up for too much walking tomorrow. The club has a couple of wheelchairs for moving subs when they canβt walk on their own. Maybe I can borrow one. βEmily may have to skip the shopping. Sheβs, um, recovering.β
A deeper chuckle from Jiro. βFrom pain or pleasure?β
βPain. Sheβs had a punishment today.β
βAh, naughty girl. Thatβs okay. Laurelβs moving a little gingerly herself. Sheβll be happy to take it easy.β
βGreat. See you tomorrow.β
After I hang up with Jiro, Theo shoots me a dark glance.
βYouβre awfully pally with some random Dom from DC,β he says.
βJiro and I could be friends from way back,β I say. βDonβt they teach you never to make assumptions in detective school?β
Theo snorts. βYeah, thatβs exactly what they taught us. Lemme guess, you never went to detective school?β
I did, actually. I got pulled into an NCIS investigation during my third year in the Navy. I hit it off with the investigating officer and he recommended that I take the two NCIS basic training programs at Glynco. I was just starting polygraph training when the Maersk Alabama was hijacked. That was the end of my Naval investigative aspirations and the beginning of four years in the hell that is the Gulf of Aden.
When I donβt answer him,
