from the hit squads, the works.  Weโ€™ve all been staying baked twenty-four-seven, and as much as I enjoy weed, we need a break.โ€

                โ€œI canโ€™t say that youโ€™re wrong.  Anywhere in mind?โ€

โ€œWell, Samhain is coming up.  Iโ€™d like to go somewhere really magickal to celebrate it.โ€  I rethought my words quickly.  โ€œMagickal as in โ€˜gee this is really coolโ€™, not โ€˜bombarded with magickal creaturesโ€™, mind you.โ€

He smiled.  โ€œI know just the place.โ€

Chapter Eight

From the Diaries of Angelique Dupre

                02/03/1589

                Roanoke Colony

Sarah finally began to understand what kind of power sheโ€™s going to come into last night.  I am quite relievedโ€ฆ I thought the girl to be a bit daft until now!

I was guiding her through the old Pagan holiday that graces two February, one my old cohorts used to call โ€œImbolcโ€.  Sarah knew nothing of the old religions, of course.  I think she still believes her coming power to be from "the devil", Christendom's favorite bogeyman.  The fact that she doesn't seemed bothered by this has eased things, to say the least.

The energies she channeled last night were potentโ€ฆ I havenโ€™t seen anyone take so well to wielding such power in a long time.

She knows no fear.  I donโ€™t know if this is a good or bad thing. She confessed that she sometimes dreamed of controlling vast numbers, but I took solace in the horror I saw in her eyes. I pray, too, that this is a good sign.

*                                *                                *

โ€œHoly shit, it does look like a quilt!โ€

I grinned and fired up my Kindle.  While this wasnโ€™t my first plane ride, it was Rainaโ€™s first trip that didnโ€™t involve miles of highway.  While I normally preferred the window seat, I let Raina have it.  Her enthusiasm was fun to watch, and made my โ€˜sacrificeโ€™ well worth it.

โ€œJust wait until we hit our peak altitude.โ€ I said.  โ€œThe clouds really look like fields of cotton-balls from up here.โ€

โ€œJack is so missing out!โ€  She turned away from the window and shook her head.  โ€œIsnโ€™t he traveling by mirror realm with Angelique and Vincent?โ€

โ€œNo, he said he was traveling by a different shadow realm, something that Hatsu and Katsu use.โ€  I grinned.  โ€œGuess whoโ€™s joining him?โ€

                โ€œShut up!โ€  Rainaโ€™s mouth hung open.

                โ€œNo, you shut up!โ€  I grinned.

My friend whistled and shook her head.  โ€œDamn, if that boy doesnโ€™t know how to pick โ€˜em!  Sheโ€™s, whatโ€ฆ five thousand years old?โ€

                โ€œBut she doesnโ€™t look a day over four thousand.โ€ I jokingly insisted.

She snorted when she chuckled.  โ€œLook, I know that she looks to be in her late teens, early twentiesโ€ฆ whatever age she was when she and her sister were frozen in time, however that happened."  She stopped, face perplexed.  "Do you know how or why they were frozen in time?"

โ€œI have not been given that story yet.โ€  I answered.

โ€œAnyway, where was I? Oh yeah...โ€ She took a deep breath.  โ€œI understand the attraction.  Sheโ€™s beautiful.  And sheโ€™s very, very smart.โ€

โ€œNot to mention completely smitten with him!โ€  I added, finger raised.  "Wherever you're going with this, remember that it's a two-way street, and Katsu is a willing participant."

โ€œI just hope he knows what heโ€™s doing.โ€  She paused, and then looked at her watch.  โ€œWhen do we get into Vancouver?โ€

โ€œFive thirty.โ€ I responded, grateful that she seemed willing to drop the subject of Jackโ€™s love life.โ€

โ€œAnd where do we go when we land?โ€

โ€œVincent said that heโ€™d arrange transportation for us from the airport.โ€

                โ€œSo heโ€™s there already?โ€

                I shrugged.  โ€œMirror realm is just faster, I guess.โ€

*                                *                                *

โ€œYou have got to be kidding!โ€

The sight before my eyes refused to register.  My friendโ€™s exclamation ignored, I stared in open-jawed shock at the unbelievable vision before us.

โ€œNo fucking way!โ€ she said.  When I again refused to answer, she just repeated herself.  โ€œNo fucking way!โ€

It was a big wooden carriage.  A big wooden carriage made to look like a giant pumpkin.

A big wooden pumpkin carriage pulled by unicorns.  Fuck me with Fae Fire. I thought.

The door to the carriage opened and out stepped Vincent, a big grin on his face.

โ€œYou said you wanted this trip to be special.โ€ he said.  He gestured at the setup grandly.  โ€œIs it special enough?โ€

Not only was it other-worldly, but it was also particularly out of place in front of the airport.  "Vincent, what are youโ€ฆ everyone can see this, I..."

He held up a hand to stop me.  โ€œDonโ€™t worry, itโ€™s enchanted to mask its true nature to the outside world.  However, Witches with Fae or Sorceress magick are immune."

                "Kickass." Raina said, grinning.

We climbed aboard, and I noticed that it was far roomier than its outside size should have allowed for.

โ€œWhat is this, time-lord magick?โ€ I asked, settling down onto an impossibly cushy seat.  โ€œOr maybe Lords of Pampering magick?โ€

                โ€œWait,โ€ Raina said suddenly, looking around wide-eyed, โ€œthis isnโ€™t...โ€

โ€œTwilight Fae magick?โ€  Vincent said, his grin growing wider.  โ€œWhy, yes it is!โ€

โ€œYou are shitting me!โ€ Raina squealed, her face lighting up.

โ€œCompletely free of excrement.โ€ Vincent avowed, raising his right hand.

โ€œOh my Gods!โ€ she squealed again.

I had heard of the Twilight Fae but knew little about them beyond that they favored a moreโ€ฆ glittery style of magick than their Wood Fae brethren that I knew best.  The fact that the โ€˜Twilightโ€™ Fae were thought of that way amused  Jack to no end.

If he could only see this! I thought.

โ€œSo,โ€ I said instead, โ€œI know almost nothing about the Twilight Fae, other than theyโ€™re one of three Fae races still known to exist.โ€

โ€œWhich is a hell of a lot more than most average Joes or Janes now about any Fae.โ€ Raina interjected.  โ€œTheyโ€™ve been incredibly successful at keeping information on them out of the public eye!โ€

โ€œAlmost zero information on any Fae has ever leaked out into the
