“I’ll call you when I’ve spoken with them.”
“One more thing,” I add. “They took a cop. Alice. She’s part of my family. Part of Molly’s life. She could be useful for the organisation.”
“Where the hell were you?” yells Vinn, getting in my face the minute I step into the club.
“Ric plans to marry Gia,” I say. “You need to leave here and go somewhere safe,” I add. “He’ll kill you next.”
Riggs comes towards me. “How do you know this?”
“Call church,” I mutter, heading for the room.
Once everyone is seated, I take a breath. “I met with my father tonight. He’s high up in the organisation in Italy. He’s well respected.”
“You’re mafia?” growls Rock. Seems not everyone had worked it out like Riggs and Vinn.
“Old news,” I say. “They want you gone,” I say to Vinn. “They think you’re a risk to them taking over London and not bringing them in on it.”
“I am a risk,” he snaps. “They’ve turned against me!”
“Ric marries Gia, kills you, and takes over anyway. The Kings lose to Cobra and you lose to the firm. I’ve made an offer.”
Vinn hauls me from my seat and rams me against the wall. I wince as pain rips through my shoulder. “You made a fucking deal behind our backs?”
“There wasn’t time to discuss it. Ricardo is marrying Gia tomorrow. He’s told the families you’ll be dead by morning.”
“But as you can see, I’m still fucking alive!” yells Vinn.
“I’ve asked for my name back. I’ll become a Rossi again and marry Gia. Our families join, giving access to the organisation. We continue to work with the Kings and get rid of Cobra. It’s a win-win,” I say.
He slams me against the wall again, causing another burning pain in my shoulder. “Win-win for you, you fucking snake.”
I grab his jacket and shove him against the opposite wall. “You have no fucking idea what I’ve done tonight. What I’m going to do to save all our asses!” I yell. “I hate the mafia and everything about it and I’m going back there to save your ass and Gia’s and the Kings. So don’t tell me it’s a damn win-win situation for me. I win nothing but your sister and fuck knows if she’ll even agree.”
“He’s right,” mutters Riggs. “We have no choice.”
“We have a fucking choice,” growls Vinn. “We kill them all.”
I shake my head. “You’re grieving for your father and you’re not thinking straight,” I snap. “They killed him and they’re coming for you. That might not be tonight, but it will happen. You know how powerful they are and they will win. So for now, let them think they have. We can play the long game if we buy ourselves some more time to make a real plan.” This seems to pacify him and he calms. I release him and take my seat. “We just have to wait for his call.”
“Won’t Ricardo lose the plot when they tell him plans have changed?” asks Blade.
“They’ll want him dead in a way that doesn’t fall back on them,” I say. “So we need a plan to take to them if they agree to our terms.”
Chapter Twenty-One
GIA
My body feels heavy. I can’t quite hold my head up, but my thoughts are perfectly clear. I can hear everything going on around me, but I can’t respond. I’m lying on the bed and two women are dressing me. One holds my arm while the other threads it through a dress. It feels like satin, silky cool against my skin. Once I’m dressed, one brushes my hair into a fan around my head on the pillow and sets about curling it. The other kneels beside me and applies makeup to my face. I want to cry, to tell them to stop, but since one of Ric’s minions woke me with a needle to the thigh first thing this morning, I’ve been like this.
We never made dinner last night. Maybe he went without me, but after I’d busted his nose, he laid into me, making sure not to bruise my face or arms. He’d left exhausted and out of breath, locking me in this room again. At some point I’d fallen asleep.
I hear Ric’s voice, but I can’t turn my head to see him. “Is she ready?”
“Almost, sir,” says one of the girls.
He peers down at me and smiles. His nose looks swollen and there’s a tiny cut across the bridge. I wish I could laugh in his face. “How’s that muscle relaxant working out for you?” he asks. He cups his ear like he’s listening for my response and then he smiles wider. “Music to my ears, peace and quiet.” He takes my chin in his fingers and turns my head from side to side. “Remember what you said about consummating our marriage,” he laughs again. “I guess it won’t be a problem after all.”
I’m lifted into a wheelchair. Anger boils in my blood. When this wears off, I’ll stick something blunt in his fucking cold heart.
One of the girls pushes me through the house. My head won’t stay upright and so I’m leaning to one side and I’m pretty sure I’m dribbling. Christ, what a stunning bride.
Eventually, we’re in a room decorated in white. Ribbons hang low and chairs are either side of a makeshift altar. There’re a few older looking men in suits filling the chairs with women by their sides dressed in wedding attire. Nobody turns to look at me as music starts to play and I’m wheeled down the aisle.
Ricardo is seated at the front, facing an unsure-looking vicar. He whispers something to Ricardo and then one of Ric’s men pulls a gun out, pointing it at his head. He presses his lips together in a tight disapproving line and straightens his collar.
I’m placed next to Ricardo, who still stares directly ahead. The vicar clears his throat. “We are gathered here today to
