“He’ll be a fucking hero if he goes to prison,” I growl.
“We’ll make sure he pays,” says Vinn.
I find Hannah in her room. Her eyes are red from crying. She spots me and begins to cry harder. I lay beside her, pulling her against my chest. “Shush,” I whisper, kissing her head. “It’s gonna be okay.”
I don’t know how long we lie like that, but at some point, I drift off to sleep. When I open my eyes, Gia is staring at us from the doorway. Hannah’s soft snores are the only sound in the room. “It’s not how it looks,” I whisper. Gia turns and walks away. “Shit,” I hiss. I gently shift Hannah onto her side and cover her over with the sheets.
Gia’s in my room with the door locked. I rest my forehead against the cool wood. “You’re awake,” I whisper.
“You weren’t expecting me to wake?” she asks through the door.
“You’ve been out of it for hours. I’m so relieved you’re okay.”
“Are you?” she asks.
“Yes. I was with Hannah because Alice was killed.” I let the words sink in. “I’d only just found out and I went to her to comfort her.”
The lock clicks and she opens the door. “Oh fuck,” she mutters.
I pull her towards me and hold her tight. “I love you,” I whisper. “So fucking much. Baby, I’m not into Hannah like that, you gotta know that. There’s only you.”
“Poor Hannah.”
“We’ll get her through it together.” Telling Molly is weighing heavy on my mind. She’s too young to suffer such a huge loss. It breaks my heart all over again just thinking about it. Fuckin’ Cobra’s been a pain in our sides for far too long.
“You washed me,” says Gia. “Thank you.”
I kiss her head and walk her backwards into the bedroom. “I’m sorry I didn’t stop them,” I mutter and she looks up at me with pity in her eyes.
“You couldn’t stop them. They had guns. I let them in. It was stupid. Why didn’t I check?”
“Guess we both fucked up. We let our guard down. That won’t happen again,” I say.
She places her hands on my shoulders and I flinch. She notices and concern fills her eyes. She lifts my shirt and runs her fingers over the blood-soaked bandage. “You’re hurt?”
“After they put you out, they shot me. I passed out. You brother thinks I’m a pussy, but it was the PTSD that took me, not the fuckin’ pain.”
She pulls me in for a kiss. “Ignore Vinn. I’m glad they didn’t kill you.” She smiles and runs her tongue over my lower lip. I can’t tell if the look in her eyes means she wants to take this to the bed, but fuck, I’ve never felt less horny than I do right now. I can’t let this shit with Cobra lie and I can’t stand the thought of Vinn thinking I’m not able to take care of his sister.
I run my hands into her hair and tilt her head back. “I gotta be somewhere,” I whisper against her lips.
“It’s the early hours,” she says, confused.
“I need to know something before I go,” I mutter, avoiding her eyes. “Ric said he . . .” I pause but I don’t need to finish the sentence.
“No,” she says firmly. “He didn’t touch me like that.”
“Cos you can tell me. It’ll kill me, but I’ll be there for you,” I say.
“I promise. I put up a good fight,” she says, smiling. “He was never gonna get that.”
I kiss her hard, showing her how thankful I am to have her here in once piece and safe. “I’ll be back soon. Look after Hannah for me.”
Chapter Twenty-Two
BLU
“I’m so fuckin’ tired,” mutters Blade.
“When the Pres finds out we’re here without his say so, we’ll be sleeping permanently,” hisses Chains.
“You didn’t have to come,” I snap. “But as second enforcer, I thought you’d want in on the action.”
“Second,” repeats Chains. “That’s insulting. I was here before you.”
“But now you’re fucking the Pres’s sister, you never get sent on the messy jobs,” points out Blade, pulling out one of those damn liquorice sticks he loves so much. I roll my eyes when he catches me staring and he wiggles the sweet stick at me with a smirk.
“She’s my ol’ lady, not a girl I’m fucking,” snaps Chains. “And I still do my share of the jobs.” Me and Blade scoff. “I do,” protests Chains.
“Movement,” I whisper, nodding to the doorway of the boating shed. A figure dressed in black goes inside and closes the door.
“I knew he’d be here,” says Blade with a grin. “I’m so fucking good at tracking.”
“He’s been running around London for months,” I say. “You got lucky.”
“Whatever.” He scowls.
“Luck’s got fuck all to do with it,” says Chains, smiling. “He fucked a club girl from Cobra’s clubhouse.”
“She was distressed after we took out their clubhouse earlier. I was looking after her. And it paid off, didn’t it,” says Blade, opening the van door. “Let’s get this done so I can go to bed.”
We don’t bother to knock. Chains takes the lead and kicks the rotting wooden door open. It splinters away and we head inside. There’s a lamp hanging over a desk and the figure looks up in surprise. “Evening, Cobra,” I smile. “We’ve been looking for you.” A girl moves out of the shadows and rushes towards the door. Blade stops her, scooping her against him. “Great. What the fuck is she doing here?” I ask. We didn’t expect witnesses.
“Ain’t she the girl?” asks Chains and Blade smirks. She’s a pretty little thing, a bit nervous and skittish, but I see why Blade went there.
“Take care of her,” I snap and Blade nods.
Cobra has a gun drawn, but so does Chains. I sigh. “Come on, Cobra. Even if you shoot one of us, you’ve still got two to go, and let’s face it, you’ll still end
