As the monks and nuns continued to converse around him, Micah thought of his parents, how they had been killed, and what they would think about what he was doing. He remembered them to some degree, but not as much as he should. It was something he felt guilty for, even if he had been just eight years old when they died. He liked to think his father would be proud of him and his mother would be worried, but that she would understand the necessity in what he was trying to do, that what the Society of Monks had done had affected everyone in the end, from those deemed insignificant to those born into wealth and power.
It was a balancing act, being alive in the civilized world, and the scale needed to be reset.
This thought had a way of settling his thoughts, realigning his focus on what was to come. He went over the maneuver that Soraya had taught him in his head, but once again Micah concluded that it might not work in such a fluid way, that he could mess it up somehow and end up getting himself killed.
Then again, if Iโm behind someone with a dagger that is stabbed in their neck, I could always use them as a shieldโฆ Micah shook his head at this thought. Who had he become? When did these kinds of ideas start coming to him? He looked at the world differently after being associated with Royal Star Ninjas; he thought of shade and cover differently, and of items that could be used to his advantage in a surprise attack, about his location in a room, as well as his proximity to one of the othersโeverything had changed since meeting them. Micah was by no means a trained man, but he was a new man nonetheless, one who had increasingly learned the secrets of industria, and the iniquities of those who held court over his society.
As the transport vehicle began to lower, he couldnโt help but think that all of that, of everything he had been through, and how it was leading up to this moment. The pressure was on, but rather than be afraid of it, or apprehensive about what was to come, a part of Micah was excited.
He was born to do this.
Once the transport vehicle landed, Saruโs security team exited in a single file line, Micah and his group following them, Yuri in the lead. There were other shiny transport vehicles landing, their teams moving in the same way, now guided by people such as Ahmey and Saru, the ones who would be in on the inner circle.
It was a nice day out, nothing in the sky to indicate what was to come. No rain clouds, no thunder, a perfect day, one that would be marred in blood and carved in the history books as a coup by the time the moon rose. It was a day that could forever change the course of Neo-Hokkaidan history, one in which the society as a whole could move to a better path, or continue on in a way that would lead to the inevitable downfall that came with extreme authoritarianism and the potential for war.
Micah and his team lined up once again; it was the first time that he felt just a glint of nervousness. There were a lot of monks and nuns around, all elite forces designated by their futuristic attire, and while he couldnโt tell who they really were through facial expressions, it was clear in the way they stood and presented themselves that they were well-trained.
As if she had done this a hundred times before, Ahmey joined one of the groups that was heading through a door with a symbol over it, Micah recognizing the glyph as the ancient Hokkaidan script. There were several entry points surrounded by additional security forces, likely ones not affiliated with those who were to meet in the inner chamber. These were the grunts who would be guarding the exterior.
The sheer number present and the anonymity of the buckets eventually made it hard for Micah to differentiate between the normal nuns and monks and those who were members of the High Council, and he assumed this was likely for reason, a show of unity and a way to make targeted assassinations more difficult. But that soon changed as they came to the next chamber, which was set in a circular pattern, the security details already starting to line up, to separate from those who would enter into the main room.
Each of the leaders was granted one guard, which meant Soraya left with Ahmey. Micah was guided, mostly by a quick gesture from Yuri, to the group he would be stationed with. She made it easy for him, Micah staying exactly where he was while his teammates fanned out around the circular chamber, so they were all technically across from one anotherโnorth, east, south, and westโthe meeting chamber set between them.
Micah stood at attention as more monks and nuns joined him until there were eight in total including himself, just as he had been told there would be. Nothing was said, and he was glad that there werenโt any other ceremonial gestures that went along with what was happening. He surely would have stuck out if this had been the case.
This is it, Micah thought as he looked to the monks and nuns around him without moving his head.
He needed to pick a target.
Chapter Thirteen
It was going to be quite an excruciating wait. While in reality, everything was set to start in forty-five minutes to an hour, Micah knew that each minute that passed with him
