him. He groans and tries to scramble away.

“You stay fucking still,” I holler. “You stay there and take this shit like you made her.”

I hit him with the chair again before tossing it to the side. His legs are sitting at an odd angle—one over the other—so I lift my leg and come down on his top one, breaking it. The way he screams brings a smile to my face.

“Oh, get ready. That’s just the first break. You like beating on women? Get your ass up and hit me. How many times did you break her ribs, you piece of shit,” I snarl as I kick him in the ribs, not once, not twice, but three times until I hear the distinct sound of breaking bone.

He grabs his side with one hand. I might be small in height, but my mother taught me how to use my weight to my advantage. I circle his body to where his other arm is stretched out and jump in the air, landing on his hand and arm.

I stomp on his hand for good measure. He pleads for me to stop like the bitch he is. Instead, I kick him in the stomach like Shawna told me he did her.

You see, I had her tell me everything. I just listened to the nightmare she’s lived through. When I say I have no mercy, I. Have. None.

I kick him in the head as he continues to plead. “Did you stop when she begged you? No, you got worse. The more she pleaded the more you beat her. Fuck you,” I growl and kick him in the stomach again.

Knowing she went through all of that sends me to a dark place. I don’t care what happens to this bastard. I just want him to hurt like he hurt her.

I sit on his chest, grab him by his hair and start to pound his head against the floor. That’s when the only person who could bring me back wraps his arms around me.

“Enough, baby, enough. If you kill him that will change who you are forever. He’s not worth it. Let go,” Pit says in my ear.

My chest heaves and tears start to flow. I release Danny and stand. Pit comes up with me.

I turn into his chest and wrap around him. He coos for me to calm down and rubs my back. I’m completely drained, but this is finally over.

Pit

I look over Skittles’ head. “Show them how to get to the apartment from here,” I say to Ox.

He looks at me in surprise, then nods. I tighten my hold on Skittles to lend her some of my strength before I kiss her forehead. I release her.

“I’ll be right behind you. Let me clean up here,” I say.

She nods and turns to follow Ox. The guys all surround her as they follow them out. Rome is the only one who stays behind.

I walk over to Danny and lift him up to sit. He whimpers and groans. Killing him would have destroyed Skittles in the morning.

Not me.

I wrap my arms around his head and snap his neck. I stand and let his body fall like the sack of shit he is. I look Rome in the eyes.

“We good?”

Without a word, he nods. I grunt, step over Danny’s body and forget this shit ever happened. I’ll sleep just fine tonight.

Chapter 39

Summoned

Skittles

I sit in the window seat at my place, talking to Shawna on the phone. It’s been a week. I wish she would have stayed with me longer, but she left this morning.

“You sure you don’t want to come back,” I say into the phone.

“Thanks, Ven, but I need some time to myself. I have a lot to figure out,” she says.

“I’m here for you. Whatever you need, say the word.”

“You’ve done more than enough, and I’ve taken up more than enough of your time. It’s time for you to spend time with your man. He misses you,” she replies.

Pit has been giving me space to handle things with Shawna, but he calls several times a day to check on us. He has sent flowers every day. Okay, when he couldn’t stay away for too long, we did have a quicky in the powder room downstairs in my brownstone off the mud area. All right, all right, it was twice.

When I told him Shawna left, he told me to come to the bar tonight. I should be getting ready, but I feel a little guilty about running out the first night Shawna is gone, like I couldn’t wait to get rid of her.

“He’ll be fine. I can come to your place,” I offer hopefully.

Shawna laughs. “Goodbye, Ven. Go do something productive with your life. I’m going to take a bath and journal or something.”

“Okay, love you, Shawnnie.”

She releases a small laugh as I use her childhood nickname. We end the call and I sit staring out of the window. So much in my life has changed in that ten weeks.

I’ll be honest. This will be the first time I stay with Pit and can focus solely on him. I’m a little nervous. What if we can’t make this work and all the feelings change without a smoking gun to our heads.

What if the thrill is gone without the damsel in distress? I’m a lot to take on. I work long hours, I curse like a sailor, and I have a temper like a volcano.

“You’re him.”

I can’t help laughing at my thoughts. I am so much Pit’s twin it isn’t even funny. I smile. Maybe I’ll give it one more night, give him more time to miss me.

My doorbell rings bringing me from my musing. I get up, wondering who it could be. Pit has a key, so I know it’s not him. That man will never ring the bell to a door he considers his.

I wonder if we’ll move in together. We would definitely need to move in here. His loft doesn’t have
