“My luck, Shawna’s a fucking smart-ass. Always running her fat mouth, trying to make me look stupid,” he seethes.
I pick my gun up and cock it. “Come again?”
He blanches. “She wasn’t any help. Three years and I couldn’t get her to talk her cousin into it. She’d shut down if I even mentioned her.
“I was running out of time. Marquis switches teams out every two years and this year is also an election year. I don’t know why, but that was important to the suit.”
I turn my gaze to Rome. He gives me a nod. Once again, I’m back to clenching my fists.
“Suit wanted to start a team we could get her to come and take over. He needed her at the final drop from what I understood. I told him this was a bad idea. Marquis runs a tight ship with those races. He could smell those assholes coming from a mile away. I told suit guy he needed better guys, but he didn’t listen.
“I got them into the club, but I knew things were falling apart. I was so fucking stressed out. Every time I looked at Shawna, I wanted to strangle her. I had new debts breathing down my neck and this plan was going to shit.
“If I didn’t get your girl to race, I didn’t get my next payment. So, I cut a deal with the little team he forced on me. I told them about the drops to Knight from Marquis.
“The plan was for them to hit Marquis’ men for the drop, and I’d use that money to buy me some time. They were supposed to make it look random. The fuckers got their heads blown off and there went my chance at some cash and the race team I needed.
“I was fucked. The buy in for each team is two million. There was no way I had that, and I couldn’t tell suit guy what I’d done. Marquis was finally trusting me to take care of business again and I couldn’t get on the plane to handle the simple task he asked me to do because those assholes fucked up.
“I turned around to go back to the house and… I was pissed at Shawna, so I planned to finish making myself clear to her. However, I found her on the phone with your girl. Heard her in a panic for her cousin, it clicked.
“I needed her to race, she had the bank roll for a team and if she couldn’t cough up the cash, she was good enough to get on a team. My luck was finally changing,” he says.
“You sure about that?” I lift a brow.
Getting Skittles into the races got me involved. That was his biggest mistake. Although, something is still nagging at me.
“Yeah, it wasn’t. From the moment she got in everything changed. Marquis didn’t like that you’d come in with a team.
“He didn’t trust it. Suit started acting weird the moment I mentioned you. He wanted to know who attended the parties, who the other sponsors were, who their teams were.
“He became obsessed with your team and the races. I was growing tired of it all. I had to leave Mexico because Marquis grew suspicious of me. My sister knew I was up to something so I couldn’t hide out for long in the expensive villa Marquis keeps her in in Florida.
“Then suit gave me the orders to change the races and to make it look like one of the other teams was a threat. I was so frustrated with this shit and I had bookies breathing down my neck. With all of that going on, I swear I didn’t realize Marquis was too silent. I didn’t think to ask questions about how the suit was pulling off the last races without Marquis,” he says the last part like he’s going to sob.
Sadly, I think it’s for his own well-being and not his brother-in-law’s. It looks like he’s been getting setup from the beginning. I don’t feel bad for him at all.
“You do realize you were set up for the fall here. That car his body was found in is registered in your name. You brought him here to Vander. Your men tried to intercept his delivery to Knight and I’m pretty sure he was onto your ass and about to call you on it all. If anyone knows that, you’re fucked,” I say with a huge smile.
He palms his face. I’ll bet everything on the fact that the need to know who the sponsors and drivers were was to get them to the fake races. It might have even been to pay off those guys that pulled that shit with Leo and Skittles.
The real fact is, this guy is useless to me. I’ve gotten all I needed.
“Does that mean it’s my turn?” I smile. Perfect timing.
Skittles
I don’t know what I was expecting when Ox told me to follow him. I was so relieved to see Shawna safe and alive, I’d forgotten about my revenge. Not anymore, just seeing this guy’s face makes me want to black out with rage.
Pit stands, picks up his gun and moves to the wall where I notice my guys are. Their presence means more to me than they can know. My father was right, they are there for everything.
“He’s all yours,” Pit says.
The small restraint I was holding onto slips away. I rush across the room and flip over the table Danny’s sitting at. Papers fly in the air.
I ignore them cascading back to the floor as I send my boot into the center of Danny’s chest. He flies back, taking the chair with him. I’m suddenly glad I put on work boots.
“Well, damn,” someone says from behind me, but I’m too gone to know who.
I snatch the chair from under Danny and bring it over my head before I send it crashing down on
