I’m pulled from my thoughts as I get downstairs and open the door. It’s Ox. He peers down at me with a smile on his face.
“Hey you,” I sing.
Then it hits me. I’ve never invited Ox to my home before. I frown.
“How do you know where I live?” I ask aloud.
“I rode with Rome to pick Pit up the other night. And your man gave me the address again tonight to make sure I got here. He’s been expecting you,” he says with a broad grin.
Ox is a handsome man. Huge, but handsome. He once told me he has some Greek mixed in him. I can totally see that.
I groan. “Is he serious?”
“Look, I’ve never seen him this way about anyone,” he says but his phone rings cutting off anything else he was about to reveal.
He barks out a laugh and shows me the phone before answering it. “Man, I’m at her front door.”
He hands the phone over to me. I roll my eyes and wave Ox inside as I take the stairs back up to the main level of my home. Pit doesn’t even let me fully breathe hello before he starts barking orders.
“Yo, what’s taking you so long? You should’ve been here. I have meetings tonight, I wanted you here before those started. Pack your bags and get here,” he says.
“Pack my bags?”
“You’re staying with me. My place is closer to the bar and your shop.”
“But my place is bigger.” I pout.
“I work late, baby. That drive will take me too long to get to you every morning.”
“You could always go home. I mean, I leave for work not long after you get off anyway,” I tease.
“I don’t care if I lived in a hole under Vander City, your ass will be with me.”
“Baby, are you sure you want me in your space? We don’t have to rush things. Maybe I—”
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. All I hear is noise. Pack your bags and get here.”
“What if I don’t want to hang out tonight? You already said you’re going to be busy. I’ll come tomorrow.”
He moves around on the other end. It sounds like he’s moving through the bar. The music dies down and I can hear him more clearly with his next words.
“Woman, if you don’t pack your bags and get your ass here to this bar, I’m going to spank your ass when I get my hands on you.” Then he hangs up.
I look at the phone with my mouth hanging open. “Asshole.”
“We good?” Ox says as I hand him his phone back.
“Yeah, I’ll be there,” I mutter.
He shakes his head. “My orders were to get you there. I don’t leave until you do.”
I throw my head back and roll my eyes. “Fine, have a seat in the living room. I need to get ready and pack my bags apparently.”
I stomp to my bedroom like a brat, but secretly, I’m a little turned on and happy he wants me with him. I grab a leather duffel bag and crack up to myself. I have a spend the night bag.
Before Pit that wasn’t happening. I wasn’t trying to spend the night at anyone’s place. I can’t stop smiling as I pack my things. I’m definitely going to need a few bags.
Yup, we need to figure out this situation because packing sleepover bags ain’t it for me. My units and shoes each need their own bags.
I groan at all the stuff I’ve packed. It dawns on me as I go for my makeup bag that I never offered Ox anything to drink and I might take a little bit longer than I thought. I’ve been taught better than that. I turn to go apologize and see if I can get him something.
“Hey, Ox. I’m sorry. Do you what something to—”
Before I can finish my sentence, all hell breaks loose. My favorite bench seat window explodes, glass flying everywhere. I’m confused at first.
“Skittles get down,” Ox bellows as he charges me with his big body, knocking me to the ground.
The wind is knocked out of me. Meanwhile, bullets continue to light up my home. When it clicks that someone’s shooting the place up, I have a mix of emotions, fury being one of them.
It took me years to get this place the way I wanted. Who the hell could be shooting at me? I push at Ox to get off of me. I need to go get my gun.
He moves but keeps me pinned down with one arm. “Stay down,” he commands.
“I need my gun,” I say.
“You need to stay down.”
The shooting stops and Ox jumps into action. I didn’t even see him pull the gun in his hands. He gets to the window and nearly stands in it as he fires down into the street below.
The sound of his gunfire and screeching tires echoes back to me. He curses and steps out of the window. I stand and look around my place. There are bullet holes everywhere.
“Get your things. We need to go,” Ox says sharply.
He already has his phone in his hand. I close my eyes. Oh, Pit isn’t going to take this well. Looks like I’ll have to make that little ass loft work.
Chapter 40
Secrets & Skeletons
Pit
Skittles is out of her mind if she thinks I’m waiting one more day to spend the night with her in my arms. I don’t care if it is six in the morning when we get out of here.
I look at the time on my phone when I hang up the call with her. She probably won’t get here before my first appointment tonight. I grimace. Knowing when she arrives and not being able to get up and go to her is going to drive me insane.
As soon as I sit the door to my back room opens and Blake steps in. Like I told Ox, I knew he was coming. Marquis’ death was sure to make
