I was surprised. โHe knows where weโre at already?โ
โHe tracks the GPS on my phone whenever I leave the compound, especially for an emergency evac.โ She hit a few buttons on her screen. โThat way.โ she said, facing east.
โLead on.โ I said, gesturing.
We walked into the treeline and through the woods. After a mile of nothing more menacing than the occasional icy patch, Tiffany finally holstered her sidearm.
โKeep it handy in case we run into any feral death metal bands.โ I said, winking. โI hear that there are a couple who came out here to shoot promotional photos that never came back.โ
โWhy do you think I avoided all of those Finnish park ranger jobs?โ Tiffany grinned. โI didnโt want to spend half of my life rescuing teenage boys with bad Kiss fetishes.โ
โWhere are we going, anyway?โ I asked, stepping over a fallen branch.
โMy Uncle said that itโs an ally of Angelique and Vincentโs.โ she replied. โSome guy named Seamus.โ
We eventually came out of the forest on the shores of a massive lake. On the waterโs edge stood a very Scottish-looking castle, which made me pause.
โThat doesnโt look very Finnish.โ I said, pointing at the structure.
โNeither does a name like โSeamusโ.โ Tiffany shrugged.
โGood point.โ I said as we resumed walking.
โSo, whatโs it like, sleeping with a vampire?โ she asked after a few more minutes.
โYou heard about that part, huh?โ I asked in return.
โYouโve gotta admit that itโs not strange that it came up in conversation.โ she replied, casting a side glance and a grin my way.
โI guess Iโm not used to being in a relationship that people talked about.โ I said.
โWell, I will admit that your friend Jack talked about it mostlyโ Tiffany said. โI think he was compensating for the fact that his girlfriend is five thousand years old.โ
โWhat,โ I said, smiling, โsomething like โmy girlfriend might be as old as the last ice age, but at least sheโs human!โ?โ
โExactly! She said, laughing.
โItโsโฆ โ I said, searching for the words. โItโs great. The sex, I mean. Just think about being with someone who doesnโt have to take a breath if they donโt want to.โ
โWoah.โ she said, her eyebrows raised.
โOther than that, itโs justโฆ sex with a soulmate.โ I continued, shrugging. โI have no idea what unconnected sex with a vampire is like because I have a ten thousand year history with the person behind the fangs that I sleep with.โ
โAnd they donโt sleep?โ
โI havenโt had to make my own breakfast if I donโt want to since I moved out of my Momโs house.โ
โSign me up!โ
We laughed again as we walked up to the door. We paused before knocking.
โHow on guard should I be?โ Tiffany asked, hand on her gun.
โThis is a Vincent and Angelique ally, not a Trevor Hawkins one, so we can be sure that weโll come to no harm.โ I replied. โTheyโve most likely spoken withโฆ Mister Seamus and paved the way for us.โ
โVery well.โ Tiffany took her hand off of her sidearm and knocked on the wooden door.
We heard some amount of shuffling and muffled cursing on the other side before the door swung open, revealing a tall, thin man with red hair tied back in a messy ponytail.
โAye,โ he said, his Scottish accent cutting through his rough, grizzled voice, โYou must be Vincent and Angeliqueโs friends!โ
โSargent Tiffany Collins, sir.โ Tiffany said, standing ramrod straight.
โIโm Annabelle.โ I said, nodding.
โAnd Iโm Seamus.โ he said. โNow get your asses in here before you attract something damagingโฆ โ
We followed him in and he led us down a stone corridor. Electric lights burned in the places where torches used to hang, the permanent soot-marks in the ceiling attesting to the castleโs pre-electric past.
โSo,โ Tiffany said, โvampire?โ
โOnly for five hundred years.โ Seamus replied. โNot nearly as long as Angelique, but Iโve seen my fair share.โ
I looked at his simple attireโฆ a plain white dress shirt and black slacks... and smiled. "You don't dress like a five-hundred-year-old Scottish vampire."
โWhat, you expect me to be running around in a kilt with flaming bagpipes or something?โ he grinned. โIโve gotta save something for parties!โ
Our host led us to a brightly decorated dining room, itโs large window showing the brilliant sunset happening outside. We sat down and Seamus pulled an embroidered rope.โ
โTARA!โ he shouted as he pulled. โWE HAVE GUESTS!โ
An annoyed Irish accent from the next room answered him. โI know we have guests,โ it said, not shouting but being heard just fine, โI fucking well told you about them! Iโm the one who read Vincentโs fucking text!โ
โWell then get them some fucking drinks!โ the vampire shot back.
A dark-haired woman, just over five feet tall, walked in the room carrying a tray full of drinks. โWell what do you think Iโm fucking doing, you cock-hungry bloodsucker?" she said, walking over and setting the tray down by us.
โSargent Tiffany Collins.โ Tiffany said, smiling. โAnd you are?โ
โTara J Brennan.โ the Irishwoman replied, extending her hand. โThe โJโ stands for Jazz, me Dad was a sax player, and me friends call me Jazzy. I take care of mister cranky pants over there.โ she added with a jerk of her head towards Seamus.โ
โAnd what about your girlfriends?โ Tiffany asked next, shaking her hand slowly.
Jazzy grinned. โThey call me often.โ
โYeah, well, youโll get kind of cock hungry after I turn you!โ Seamus said, a smug grin on his face.
โUgh, donโt remind me!โ Jazzy grimaced.
โWhat?โ Tiffany said, confused.
โWhatever part of us that dictates who we like to canoodle withโฆ โ I explained, โโฆ doesnโt really survive the transition from human to vampire. Gay, straightโฆ it all becomes this messy pansexual mush around vampires.โ
โYeah.โ Seamus continued, crossing his
